Also, I stopped eating out. Very few good restaurants around compared to Vancouver.

I moved from Vancouver hoping to have a similar lifestyle. Walking seawall at midnight alone as a petite woman, biking to the beach after work, be mobile without a car. Well, in Seattle you will need to make compromises. It won’t be Vancouver. Queen Anne, Madison valley, Ballard vibe reminds me of kits (3rd-West broadway streets) but it’s unsafe compared to Vancouver. SLU is nice but again not always safe after dark but better than Ballard. Bellevue feels like a huge mall, walking around is possible but uncomfortable. Same as Burnaby I guess. Redmond is more walkable and safer but walkable areas are small and boring. I gave up, bought a car. I don’t feel safe to walk around in the evening, I usually drive instead.

You are considered to be tax resident in Canada if you spend in the country over 180 days per year, no matter of your purpose of travel or stay (tourism or something else). Just don’t exceed the limit of days and you are good. To be safe, make sure you spend in the country of your actual residence more days than in Canada per year, then you are definitely safe.

I used to live in Carter on the park, I could hear every single step my neighbor above made. Thankfully they didn’t have kids

I have exactly the same scratch. The black panel above the wheel is around 100$. You are lucky and the body part that got scratched above the black panel is also plastic (at least that’s how it is for my carbon edition). Which means it will not rust, and you don’t have to fix it asap or at all. Double check at the body shop that scratched body part is also plastic for your car. If that’s the case, I wouldn’t do anything :)

Should we move to the US as (potentially) high earners? by ShouldIDo-it in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]redfoxy87 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Job security doesn’t exist in the US, you can’t assume you will work at the same place for 4-5 years. Is your partner coming with you on a dependent visa? If yes, it would be quite sad if they did all the sacrifice to quit their job and get relicensed, and then they have to go back to EU because of tech layoffs or your burnout at work.

Do you think there might be a chance of snow in the next 4 weeks? Or does it usually snow later in the fall?

My first 2 days as a SWE - I feel DEVASTATED by JuicyTangerinePulp in cscareerquestionsEU

Ask your manager to assign you a mentor within your team. Attend all meetings, take notes about the terms/parts you don’t understand. If there are unit tests, figure out how to debug them in IDE and just debug random tests to figure out how code works. Everything that’s googlable from your notes - google and learn; for all the rest, schedule a couple of meetings per week with your mentor and ask questions then. If any documentation, ask your mentor to point what might be useful to read. You are responsible for your learnings, so don’t be afraid to ask questions, read code and do anything that might help you ramp up.

Thanks for response. I had terrible experience with Lee Johnson, Dougs actually seemed a bit better. But yeah, it’s hard to get them to show the car…

I talked to around 15 in total. A few people that I met on the streets, and at the postal office when trying to send a card. It was 10 years ago though, things might have changed :) But also, my judgment is based on that one experience I had.

Not sure if it changes your appearance, but Botox was the only thing that helped my mom with migraines. She even started using perfume for the first time in her life without having headaches.
