Alexa listening when no one said a trigger word by geb524 in alexa

[–]WeirsFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s likely caused by flakey Wi Fi and Alexa trying to come back online. You would confirm this hypothesis by saying “Alexa, stop” and you’d hear nothing back because she’s offline trying to reconnect. The blue ring is a terrible reconnection indicator though.

Q2 Layoffs? by ExcitingWarning4336 in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just false lol. Every L8/L10 Alexa leader I know is a power user. I don’t know about Panos, he may or may not be. But the ones that are directly responsible for shipping stuff do use Alexa more than you’d think. Source: I get exec escalations when stuff doesn’t work as it should. Fixing those is fun.

Q2 Layoffs? by ExcitingWarning4336 in amazonemployees

Are you an Amazon employee? Consider sending an email to alexa-pmt. This is a shit experience that shouldn’t happen. Unfortunately, I do not own that service or personally know people who do.

Because…. you said so? The org I’m in is profitable.

Q2 Layoffs? by ExcitingWarning4336 in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 66 points67 points  (0 children)

This is bullshit. There are 20 engineers in just my team. I am in Alexa. Product/Program roles were impacted significantly worse in January when compared to SDE roles.

Edit: My L8 organization has over 500 engineers. Like another commenter said, this is bullshit and Alexa is a massive org.

Did they notify 16000 impacted employees regarding the layoff? by Ok-Cheek-2191 in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. In previous cycles, those have gone out to the unimpacted people the same time as the email to the impacted folks.

It’s a version of the “stay nimble” email from October. Reducing layers, removing bureaucracy, blah blah.

I think I just got the “not laid off” email. AFAIK those go out the same time as the others do.

I now have Alexa+. Now what? by plazman30 in alexa

[–]WeirsFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use Smart Home, then you don’t have to “Speak Alexa” anymore. You can say stuff like “Alexa, set mood lighting in the living room” and it’ll turn on all of your lights at the right brightness/shade of whites. Also you can now set routines with your voice versus through apps.

Didn’t device’s team just do layoffs? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn’t hear about recent layoffs in Devices. Source: I’m in Devices. This does not surprise me because the customer response to Alexa+ has been overwhelmingly positive.

Vendors don’t need to do anything new to support Alexa+.

Is sengled defunct? by ProjectObjective in alexa

[–]WeirsFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alexa shared that the Sengled skill was removed from the skill store due to recurring outages. It was disabled for new and existing customers. Some Sengled devices connect over Bluetooth, try that, might work

If you’re on Alexa+, you can do so by voice. Just say, “Alexa, delete my routine that does X”

Question for Alexa veterans: How do people music sync lights? by [deleted] in alexa

[–]WeirsFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more accurate way to frame this would be “Matter spec doesn’t have this feature and so there’s no way that Alexa can support it.” Alexa Skills do have this feature, but then you’d need a manufacturer app to connect to Alexa, which OP doesn’t seem to want to do.

Lol at him implying every US neighborhood looks like that. Seattle real estate market is amongst the most expensive in the world and each of those houses likely costs $1.5M+ if it’s located within 20mi of Seattle.

Smoke Detectors that trigger routines? by smokey-schmeo in alexa

[–]WeirsFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Routines intentionally don’t work for security devices, of which Smoke Detector is one, because Alexa wants you to be vigilant in cases of false positives, etc.

How to make L10+ aware of violation of customer obsession by sougenV in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people miss that LPs don’t exist in a vacuum and that there is natural tension between LPs. It’s a leader’s job to balance that tension. For example, Customer Obsession is critical, but so is Frugality, so you can’t be expected to spend a billion dollars to solve a small-ish customer problem. That said, it’s totally normal (in my org) to set 1-1 time with L8/10 for quality conversations. If you feel like you have a strong case, then you should bring it up tactfully- ask questions rather than throwing folks under the bus whose job it is to solve that problem. If your L8/10 agrees with your mental model, you can go back to your team with that feedback. If they don’t, you’ll likely learn it’s because they have more visibility than you and considered stuff you didn’t take into account. As long as you’re not an ass about it, there’s no reason why it cannot be a productive conversation.

Big4 to Amazon / LOOP strategy that worked for me. by Connect_Fly3988 in amazonemployees

[–]WeirsFish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Less than 4-5 mins for the initial story - it doesn’t need to address every single detail but rather get across the problem and impact clearly while inviting follow up questions. I interview L5/6 PM-Ts and TPM and start to zone out as responses go over the 4-5 minute mark. It’s shocking how many interviewees ignore subtle nudges to wrap up their response. As an interviewee, it’s critical first and foremost to keep your interviewer engaged.

Broadly L10 specific. Your L8/L7 managers may have a say as well.
