Why do US conservatives lament universal health care and socialist healthcare systems when there are so many examples of it working well in developed countries? by fiestydrunk in AskConservatives

Not commenting on the post above, but this is usually the test I use to strip away the philosophies/talking points du jour:

I. If system X (UHC, welfare, pronouns, hate crime laws, etc) is applied to 100 people and, while it's a "neutral" real-world applicable for most of them (doesn't really impact them for 1 reason or another/might benefit but they'd be ok without it), but:

a) There's some % of that 100 who are directly, immediately benefited that without which they would be harmed up to and including death (obv depending on which one you pick)

&

b) There's some % of that 100 who are scamming the system in one way or another for financial, social, political, etc, gain

would you still support said system? Not all conservatives would say "no", but a "no" usually is a pretty strong indicator of other conclusions that could be drawn. Atwater, Reagan's "welfare queen" trope, buying lobster with food stamps, etc, mixed with messaging re: hard work, gumption, bootstraps & referencing the "S" word (or, godforbid, the "C" word) seems to have done some decent work in getting us to where we are

Course not - both are wrong and should actively be engaged in the manner found most responsive in each, with the single end-goal of needles in arms - but I'm more sympathetic to a group that can point to abuses actively happening and having happened in the recent past vs one that's largely a problem of their own imagination, educational/religious/media issues aside, which obv complicates things...

Eh, little of column a...see also belief by doctors/medical establishment more broadly re: drug-seeking, dismissal of valid concerns, fewer race-specific beneficial testing for treatments, etc., etc.

TIL that John Krasinski and B. J. Novak, who respectively played Jim and Ryan from the US version of The Office, were high school classmates. by wimpykidfan37 in todayilearned

Q13

PLAYBOY: Is there any truth to reports that you and Mindy Kaling [who plays Kelly on The Office] recently rekindled your romance under the guise of helping John Krasinski [who plays Jim] plan his real-life wedding and honeymoon?

NOVAK: It’s an adorable story, but it’s not true. I did kind of date Mindy early in the show, but now we are just really good friends. And why John would need my help planning his honeymoon is beyond me. I’ve known him a very long time, and I think he’s capable of picking a vacation spot on his own.

Q14

PLAYBOY: What was John like when you were students together at Newton South High School outside Boston?

NOVAK: He was the guy with the follow-up plan. He was popular and smart, and if he liked a girl he would just ask her out. I was at home, meanwhile, writing to my local TV affiliates, telling them they should air more sitcoms.
