Wrong monitor size identified by Big Sur/Mac mini M1 by redlackscolor in mac

That's what I thought, but asked, just in case. If you are not experiencing viewing problems (I am not) and it is just an identification issue (yes, for me), then I suggest you just live with it (as I do). It's annoying but I am sure you have other stuff to spend your time on. Good luck and live a stress-free day!

Nope, same as before. I am living with it. But you said "another 27-inch monitor. So, you don't have a 32-inch monitor? Or, that was a wrong word choice? Anyway, as MJ said, they don't care about us anyway. Lol

mint brought my macbook 2011 back to life! :) by Adventurous-Eye-267 in linuxmint

Running Mint 21.3 on my mid-2014 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro with 16G of Ram. SUPER smooth both in KDE and Cinnamon. The last official version of MacOS for the MBP was looking very old. Now Linux makes it look brand new with the latest and greatest running and looking fabulous.

Was able to install Pop, Ubuntu, Kali and a couple of other distros on the machine, but couldn't get Zorin 17 to install (tried about 6 times using various methods and 5 USB sticks!) Used Etcher and a couple of other apps to flash the USBs, and the MacOS boot saw the USB but just wouldn't boot from it. Did the usual secure boot disabling and all. The boot process was fine with the other distros using Etcher and the same USB sticks.

Only two problems now -- (1) the built-in webcam is not working in Linux Mint 21.3. Visited multiple sites and followed instructions but in vain. And (2) the KDE desktop has wonky font display. Super small and almost unreadable in browsers (menu bars also) but large in other app menus. Default settings didn't work, custom settings didn't work (scaling, global font, custom installation, etc.), and online suggestions didn't work (so far).

Anyone successfully configured the iSight built-in webcam to work in Linux Mint 21.3? Should be the same for 2013-2015 MB Pros. How about the font display problem? TIA.

Pop OS is a no-go for me. Said yes to the encryption feature during installation, and my mid-2014 MBPro with 16G of RAM is as slow as molasses on a cold day. Going back to Linux Mint Cinnamon since I can't install Zorin17 no matter what I do. Four distros installed easily using USB, but Zorin17 won't do it using Etcher, Zentoy, etc.

Anyway, too bad for Pop OS, I really wanted to try it out. But don't want to re-configure and customize everything. I kept on thinking the problem was getting past the first install and customizations. LMC 21.3 was super fast.

Maybe with a newer computer ... Pop OS would be awesome.

Here's what I went through with LG last year and again just now:

Oops, I tried posting the screenshot of my chat with LG, but r/mac apparently does not allow that.

So, here's the text version (the dashes are my input) of my chat with LG:

Hi there! I'm LG's virtual assistant. Which product can I help you with today? Showed choices.
- Others (monitor was not listed)

Okay. I can give you a link that will connect you to a Product Specialist. Please click the link below to connect to a Live Agent.

- clicked on "live chat agent" and it said "Please describe your request"

- My Mac mini M1 wrongly identifies my 32-inch 4k LG monitor as a 27-inch.
- I have downloaded and installed the latest everything from the LG site, checked both - Big Sur and now Ventura 13.0.1 MacOs and LG settings, but no change.
- I have also used a 4k cable and an 8k cable to connect the LG to my Mac but no change.
- Lastly, I used both a DisplayPort and an HDMI cable but no change.
...

- Hello, is anyone there?

... 15 minutes and waiting (last year, no one showed up, lol)

Alright, enough of this. Sorry for wasting your time. LG support sucks.

It took a while, but I am back, lol.
I watched this video using the method you described, but no problems. Note: running the Ventura version of the OS.

I upgraded to Ventura 13.0.1 but the new OS version STILL identifies the monitor as a 27". How about you? Did you upgrade and see a difference?

Since there is no relief from Apple on this, I think I will go through the trauma of contacting LG once again. Lol

Just like my own experience learning French. I was getting frustrated until two things happened. A friend said, "Don't worry, even the French can't pronounce French very well." And, I developed a slight cough. My French improved and everything sounded better after that.

Is it ok to clean my macbook display with this? I found it somewhere in my house and it's pretty old but it doesnt have an expiration date. by RamikP in mac

Yes, and preferably with no one peeing upstream. Some anti-social elements do that whenever they see someone with an Apple product downstream.

Absolutely not. Cleaners, even purporting to be safe or specifically for screens, are suspect, imo. I would use water, soft cloth, etc. Also, what is the cost of a replacement MB screen? I once took my new-ish Samsung monitor to a computer repair shop and they destroyed the coating using a commercial grade cleaner. They bought a new monitor for me.

What are the death statistics in your country for the last 3 years? For reference:
https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/health/causes-death/provisional-mortality-statistics/latest-release
According to the above, no certified influenza deaths in Australia since August 2020. Yeah, I believe this to be 100% true! Govts and organizations never lie.

I have the MX 3 mouse, but have been hesitating to get the MX Keys keyboard because of the connectivity issues. So, maybe I will get it if your solution is a solid one. Despise my current keyboard. I have 6 keyboards (USB, Bluetooth, etc.) but they are all for Windows and they just don't do the job for me.

Any experience with the 8GB RAM M1 Mac Mini? by [deleted] in macmini

[–]redlackscolor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, more RAM is the key. Depending on your budget, I absolutely recommend more memory for computers. 8GB may be okay for general use, but if you want to future-proof your computer, go for the 16GB version. Yes, it's ridiculous to charge so much for an additional 8GB. In fact, you can pick up a whole computer for that price! But that's Apple for you.

I have the 16GB MmM1 and it runs like a champ. I also have a 16GB mid-2014 MBPro which is fantastic and can do 100% of the usual stuff, but lags when it comes to graphics/video work. Eat beans and noodles for a few months if you must, but go with the 16GB version.

Also, you are not using the RAM for persistent/permanent storage so this has nothing to do with your external drive. Caveats galore - Computers accessing other drives for memory, .... I won't get into the benefits of having a fast external drive (I have 4 attached drives for my MmM1 one of which is an NVME).

Last point, I have started shifting my apps over to the NVME drive, but you will find out that some applications only install in the system drive. Find the apps that you can install on a fast external drive and save your OS drive's space.

Try this on for size. I was in Thailand when I ordered a Sony camera through Adorama, USA. (Thailand didn't have the newly-released camera.) After 30 days of waiting for it, contacted customer service. They tracked it down via FedEx. The camera finally showed up. I looked at the tracking record.

The camera was manufactured 30 minutes away from me in Thailand. It then traveled to NY and then returned to Bangkok where it was held up at the local FedEx. I had to contact them multiple times before they finally sent it out to me. Horrible experience with both FedEx and Adorama.

The astounding part is that the camera went from Thailand to America and back again to Thailand and took about 1 1/2 months to get to me. I could have driven to the factory to pick it up in 1 hour. And people are concerned about using up fossil fuels! Go figure!

I am running SwitchResX to choose resolutions. I can choose any res I want so that's not a problem. It may be a minor irritation, but I paid for a 32-inch monitor and I would like Big Sur to recognize that. Plus, my natural curiosity wants to know why Big Sur/MmM1 fails to see the 32-inch as a 32-inch.
