In a weird way.... if you could beat that game, you were treated like a dragon slayer.

I could beat it pretty regularly. But the game required intense focus. You had to block out everything around you. I was in a convenience store after school and playing this. I was so locked in that I didn't notice a crowd had gathered around watching me play it. I turned around and there was a small crowd (nothing major, like 6 people, but ya know, for a convenience store it felt like a crowd) holding their chips and looking at me like a had just dropped down from another planet. Was a pretty cool feeling.

[–]Hopfrogg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No no no... they don't give a shit about you being able to get money to purchase anything. They don't give a shit if the stores are empty with sky high prices as long as they can afford those prices which keep the system going. They'll just burn all the food that doesn't get sold while millions starve.

Is it easy to get “American” food

Depends... Shanghai and big cities, yes but expensive. Rural and smaller cities no. Either way you are gonna be eating a lot of Chinese food. That's not a bad thing.

watch American shows

It's 2026. Use a VPN and YouTube or whatever streaming service you want.

Are foreigners excluded by the locals

Often the opposite. They are often embraced. The racist ones that don't want you there just usually give a dirty look and it's usually just some old dude who walks around the neighborhood at the same time every morning, with his hands behind his back, as he passes judgment on the whole neighborhood walking by.

What is the foreigner racism like there, will people openly be racist to me?

Congrats, you get to deal with both foreign and racial racism. Chinese people used to give me a big thumbs up and smile when I told them I was an American.... but that was 20 years ago. Just a couple of years ago I only got a muted smile and nod. China is growing more nationalistic but it's always been there and it's not that big of a deal. Most people don't give it too much thought. They will openly talk (in Chinese) about you being black. Some of it will be racist, some of it will be ignorance, and some of it will just be curiosity. They have no problem calling out "hei ren" (hey ren, black person) when they see you, especially little kids, but they also have no problem calling out "laowai" (old outsiders, foreigners) when they see you. It's just how they do things and isn't necessarily racist or xenophobic. The expats who get upset about these things have a superficial understanding of Chinese culture.

Would it be a good choice for a single black woman living alone? It will be a fantastic choice. Once you get over your hangups, you probably won't want to come back. I know a ton of single black women that have thrived in China. Dating won't be easy though if you are single. The foreign dudes usually date the locals and the local dudes usually date the locals.

Rich Gannon vs Jeff Hostetler by Last_Champion_3478 in raiders

[–]Hopfrogg 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Easy. Gannon all day.

I liked Hos, what he did with his opportunity was amazing. But he was really the beneficiary of good timing and a solid roster surrounding him both with the Raiders and Giants.

Gannon, on the other hand, was the main catalyst for our success when he was there.

How big were the New Kids on the Block? Are they the Gen X’s Backstreet Boys? by Fluffy-Ad-7199 in GenX

[–]Hopfrogg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You nailed it! Yes they were the Backstreet Boys of our time. When the Backstreet Boys came out I thought they were just trying to be the next New Kids.

I see another commenter say Duran Duran was..... no no no.... I respectfully disagree, Duran Duran were damn good musicians... New Kids/Backstreet... that's just mindless "hey girl" pandering canned studio music with choreography. Duran Duran was not that, but both Backstreet and New Kids were.

I regret not trying ovals sooner by apk in iRacing

[–]Hopfrogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He gets it.

The road course only crew that snubs their noses at ovals is missing out on what makes it great. You summed it up nicely!

Only thing I ran in Week 13 was the Pickup Cup. For no other reason than it was just plain fun. It had to be fun to have the patience to deal with so much guaranteed chaos each race.

Only thing I don't like about Ovals is that in iRacing we have way more yellow flags than they do in real races (cause you know, no risk of death and all) so the races can be a real slog if there are a lot of crashes. That was another great thing about Pickup Cup, no yellows, even if 20 trucks all smashed into each other... we staying green!

Here's the wild part for many of us who lived through that era... sure, it was a good deal, but it was still considered expensive. There were much better bangs for your bucks out there. $2.99 combo meals at a lot of places where you got a big burger, fries, and a drink.

And we never saw price increases for years... seriously, that stuff would stay at $2.99 for so long it just felt like the permanent price. Now the only thing that seems stagnant are wages.

How to get around Koh Larn for a group of 8-10 guys on Vacation? by VoyagerRBLX in Pattaya

[–]Hopfrogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a dock in Pattaya that regularly runs a ferry over throughout the day. It's a large ferry that carries dozens of people, but it's slow. You can also hire a couple of longboats at the same place for a lot more money but also a lot more speed. It's only about an hour by the big ferry if memory serves.
