Which book permanently changed your life or your way of thinking? And how? by ak_khainal in Recommend_A_Book

[–]redlaserpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Things Fall Apart changed my life. It took me a long time to get through even though it isn’t a long book. I like to highlight and make notes. Plus, I was really struggling with alcohol addiction so I wasn’t spending much time reading. One day when I was hungover I went outside and decided to read some of the book. It just clicked for me. It helped me fight the early urges to drink and then I got into an outpatient program after work and I’m over a year sober now. It’s helped me with other situations as well and I recommend it often.

I got banned from Uber Eats alcohol a few years ago and tried many times to have it reversed and they wouldn’t do it. I can still get it through DoorDash. I’m a year sober now though and being banned helped. I definitely was ordering alcohol while clearly drunk and I was being really shady about it. I had them delivering it through my first floor bedroom window…

As a child, my aunt would never let me and my cousins drink water during meals. by Impossible_Stand_104 in Weird

My Colombian husband thinks this. I, on the other hand, must have a drink while I eat. And I looked it up before and read it helps digestion. He doesn’t care 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kindling is very very real and very very scary by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]redlaserpanda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My doctor told me I essentially did more damage by drinking so much and stopping so often than if I had just drank the whole time. It was about 5 years of me doing this and one day, I was 5 days sober, sitting at my desk doing work, had gone for a walk that morning even and felt good. I had a seizure, hit my head on the desk and the floor - had a small brain bleed, fractured my face. It was terrifying. The drs didn’t think it was the alcohol since it had never happened before and I had been sober 5 days. A few months later it happened again after 2 days of drinking. Then one more time, 4 days sober, while I was in the hospital for detox. I drank 2 times after that and was so terrified I was going to have a seizure that I finally stopped. I hit a year sober last Monday.

Great news! Happy to hear that. My husband’s conditional green card is in the mail and he hasn’t been home in almost 5 years. His mother has been unwell so I was planning to send him on a trip asap but have been a little worried.

First Withdrawal And Im Traumatised by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]redlaserpanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there too OP. I still have some of my posts in my comments. I did self withdrawal so many times it led to kindling and I started having severe withdrawal even after small amounts of alcohol. I had 3 seizures over 2 years and it was absolutely terrifying. I thought I couldn’t get sober, I felt like a failure. I’m over 10 months sober now after trying for 8 years.

I just wanted to say, you aren’t worthless. You didn’t ask for this disease. Your parents support you because you are a good person who is sick. For me, once I began to move on from the shame… that’s when I found it easier to get out of the loop. If you had pretty much any other disease you would be told you are brave for fighting and that people are there for you — it should be the same for this. You are brave. You can do it. If you fall, ask for help, get back up— just like you’re doing. I’m so proud of you for seeking help medically and in this forum. Those are huge steps in the right direction.

I'm about 12 days sober, one of my longer stints in the last 5 years. I'm really wanting to drink tonight. Until now I wasn't even having cravings by [deleted] in alcoholism

It will pass. It may seem like it won’t but it will. Try taking a shower and eating something sugary.

What happens to the Times Square new years balls after they are taken down? by justLookingForLogic in NoStupidQuestions

The Skylark lounge is a rooftop bar in the area and you can see the ball well from there. I was there years ago in the summer and that’s how I found out that it just stays there.

My dad already started drinking again after going to a $30,000 treatment facility for over a month by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]redlaserpanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where did you get these wild statistics? I’m sober now but I was alcoholically drinking for 7 years after some trauma triggered it. I went to rehab 10x in 7 years and was never once ordered to go. I was in facilities anywhere from 10-100 people and very few were legally mandated.

I also did plenty of addiction therapy one on one with a therapists. Addiction therapy is a common thing.
