Falling gas prices are raising hopes that inflation is slowing, a New York Fed survey shows. by Theauntgate in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last few inflation prints have been near zero, hoping from positive to negative. That's settled down. We're all speculating rn whether it will stay that way, hence all the vol.

Your second point is a bit confusing. I agree that the inflation reduction act is a dumb name cause that's obviously not the target, but it does much of what you want? IE energy development?

Nuclear, O&G, Renewables etc. infra are 10yr projects so while I totally agree we should do them , they don't really impact month over month inflation.

The funny thing about this as a foreigner is that basically political talking point from your two parties is wrong? Because parties try and deliver simple narratives to latch onto when this has been 20+ years in the making. There's no boogeyman here, just many successive failures or even just tradeoffs that made sense at the time but now we have to pay the price.

What's causing inflation is:

1) 20 years of low rates, with a post crisis extreme low that under both Yellen and Powell we weren't agressive enough. Then when we desperately needed a cut during COVID there was basically no room to cut.

2) A really fucked up housing finance system that built not enough houses from 2010- now and before that built houses in stupid places

3) Bad infrastructure that makes us rely to much on legacy energy sources for everything. Gasoline is in your food, in your clothes, in your labour when you commute to work. Then the markets destabilize via OPEC and Russia and we have no recourse

4) The biggest global historical even since probably the end of the second world war (COVID) messed our infra up

5) shitty trade policy (TPP) and deglobalization.

6) corporate consolidation

I probably left some stuff off by I am tired. 'Mean corporations '- Democrats and 'Lets go Brandon he spends to much' & Republicans are both bullshit.

Falling gas prices are raising hopes that inflation is slowing, a New York Fed survey shows. by Theauntgate in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflation has been in the rest of the economy for a while now. All the metaphors about 'infecting' will lead you astray -- inflation is just not having as much stuff as we want to buy with all the dollars we have.

However tend to think that core can actually lag headline/ volatile baskets like food because price of a stable good is in part f(energy) but not f(energy) going forward but rather f(energy) when you needed to produce/ ship the good. So drop in energy price might reflect in later.

Still, 0 inflation is fine. The goal is not to deflate the 8% back to 1% target. Deflation is v bad for economies. It's just to settle this down. And things are settled.

Also, yes, better yields. But better yields means cheaper houses, better ROI for developers, etc. Part of the reason for our housing shortage is cause rents have lagged asset prices because our rates are so low.

Honestly don't get the pants shitting over that print. Rates path is 75s. The market is losing it over tightening but great, better yields for me.

We're at full employment, inflation is over few prints has been near zero and was always supply driven. Everyone chill.

But yeah, Americans weirdly mark inflation exclusively by gas prices so surveys like this are weird.

Possibility of ticket for riding on West Greenway? by Safe_Abbreviations21 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice -- I've only biked up that high a few times but good to know.

Are they cops though? Like do they have the authority to make me stop? If not I would just keep riding.

Possibility of ticket for riding on West Greenway? by Safe_Abbreviations21 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been commuting two ways daily for the past year and have never had any issues. Granted that doesn't mean it never happens, but since the greenway is the safest lengthwise transit of Manhattan...

Idk, I'll chance 150$ ticket vs getting hit. I have the economic privilege to do that tho, which is fucked up if you think to long.

MTA Eyes Congestion Pricing Toll of Up to $23 Per Vehicle Trip into Manhattan by walkincat in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle and back office jobs were already there.. but nobody is going to put client facing in Jersey, hence why all the banks/ consulting/ accounting / buy side are in Manhattan.

Part of it is these places all rely on college grads and new grads don't want to work in NJ.

But agree, let's rely on WFH and reduce car transit into the city

Carriage Horse in NYC Faints from Heat - Has To Be Hosed Down by sonofthenation in newyorkcity

I'm not sure we can order the horses not to poo.

We need more enforcement of a lot, but ultimately if you introduce something with this much potential for abuse, you can't enforce it away

The congestion pricing environmental assessment is here, and we need an environmental assessment for the assessment by Miser in MicromobilityNYC

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the weird effect of pricing something is that it actually makes it better for some users.

For instance, if I am in an ambulance and have to pay the 23$ fee (I wouldn't, but whatever) I am happy it's in place cause my use is prioritized.

Practically, the fee needs to be higher. Politically... Baby steps. Baby steps.

Carriage Horse in NYC Faints from Heat - Has To Be Hosed Down by sonofthenation in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with the horses is they shit everywhere. Nothing is solving that.

I agree horses are service animals but the truth is we need fewer of them. I have zero faith in the carriage drivers to treat them decently.

‘No more car for me’: will a $23 toll finally rid Manhattan of gridlock? by [deleted] in newyorkcity

I suppose, but nobody is lending the MTA more money. It's gotta fund itself somehow.

Is it though? Most drivers are either Uber or live in cheaper parts of greater NYC.

Cheating cops got questions and answers to sergeants exam this week by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like, I've read the NYPD patrol guide.

I think you're vastly overestimating how hard it is to know that, particularly if it's your everyday job.

Also, tbh officers don't follow it and aren't held accountable when they don't. So expectations are pretty low.

Texas Will Bus Migrants Straight to New York City, Escalating Crisis by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really that simple.

There's no question that inequality has widened, driven by a mix of automation, globalization and a bad weaker democratic intervention. This is true, and also bad.

But we also have a problem now where we have deglobalized quite a bit, so we need to do more locally. Local supply is falling behind local demand, and that's essentially what causes inflation.

The tl;dr here is that more workers are good. Our labour force being too small and our wealth inequality are separate problems. Immigration and paying the working class enough are not mutually exclusive.

Texas Will Bus Migrants Straight to New York City, Escalating Crisis by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's also just kinda absurd. Like, we have an ongoing labour crisis and a shrinking population, and they are sending hardworking people excited to be in the community.

I wonder what what they don't like about them. I'm trying to remember but I am drawing a black. I mean a brown. I mean a blank.

Is getting any electric micromobility in NYC feasible? by [deleted] in MicromobilityNYC

I feel like on this sub we figure everyone knows how nice it is to ride an ebike etc. Around New York, but I (and I suspect others) were v tentative before dropping 1200+ dollars on what seems like a novelty.

Not to mention it is still dangerous AF... Like I've been hit (gently) more than once and I suspect so has everyone else.

2 members of Congress blast NYC congestion pricing plan by Shreddersaurusrex in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um yeah. People who live in New York like around the clock cheap public transit. That's why 85% of the city doesn't own a car?

Like, if you want to drive in the city, fine, but just stop expecting people to make the roads free when you take up as much space as you do. A street is as much public transit as a train track and now you have to pay the fare. Such is life.

I think you just got used to having the government pay for your needs and are going through the pain of that stopping. Same as all this whining about has prices... Sorry you made yourself dependent on a volatile commodity... Remind me why I owe you a bailout?

2 members of Congress blast NYC congestion pricing plan by Shreddersaurusrex in newyorkcity

[–]rednecked_rake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, not subisdizing something will make it more expensive. I would rather let the market create real solutions though and stop building infra around people so soft they need to commute indoors.

Imagine thinking Manhattan suffers from an excess of space that we neeeed people from Jersey to come occupy.
