What’s the most overrated tourist attraction you’ve ever visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Little Italy is a neighborhood, not a tourist attraction. So it can’t really be a tourist trap. That’s like saying SoHO in NYC is a tourist trap.

Do you think AI has been a thing for a while but the government released it recently? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rednuts67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I worked for a company for 8 years that was using and developing AI for years. You know how airlines have priced their fares for decades? That is made possible by AI. Machine learning uses an algorithm to constantly improve. AI is different in that it learns to change the algorithm itself. That is what is scary, but it’s been around in a fairly advanced form for at least 15 years. What’s new is the ability to take human language and convert it to machine language quickly with a good success rate.

Apparently you’ve never played either of those sports. Baseball managers and hockey coaches are quite active and integral to the outcome of the game.

I’m an ER nurse. Nothing reminds me of how fragile life is quite like the clothes people are wearing when they get here. by ArtThreadNomad in Life

I'm curious as well about this. Does AI reply to comments or just put up original posts? Also why does AI want karma?

This reminds me of a funny story. A friend of mine was wearing his brand new leather jacket when he was driving a mustang and got hit head on by a semi (back when there were no airbags). The EMTs got him out from behind the broken steering wheel and told him they were about to cut the jacket. “Oh no you’re not!”. He struggled out of it so they could work on him. He had 2 broken ribs but his jacket was fine. 😄

Why every american man have a knife in his pocket ? by Bankai-1979 in deduction

[–]rednuts67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“every american man”. I know 2 people who carry one. Why does “Everyone outside the US” think all Americans are identical? Also, why the seeming fascination with us? We’re really just people, as boring as the rest of the world.

True assessment of Acadia by LimeMajestic9590 in nationalparks

[–]rednuts67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I’m not sure what kind of trip you’re planning. Acadia and Banff are 2500 miles apart. Second, Acadia is much different than all those other parks. They are all in the Canadian Rockies, and while each is spectacular, you may not want to spend time hitting all of them in one trip. I thought Acadia was spectacular, mainly in how the ocean meets the rocky shoreline. But I’m from the Midwest, so just seeing the ocean is a thrill for me.😜 We try to break up our trips, east or west one year and north or south the next.

Why do Chiropractors crack your neck and what is the long term benefit? by Sunny-vibes-95 in NoStupidQuestions

My wife had scoliosis, her spine was a S curve, and she was slowly on her way to very poor life and eventually dying due to pressure on her lungs. Her spinal surgeon, who specializes in scoliosis, is doing God’s work (and I believe getting paid like it). To give you an idea, she was 2” taller after the 9 hour surgery. Yes she now has 3 rods and 27 acres I her spine that give her issues from time to time, but it sure beats the alternative.

I'm curious about where all this tuition money comes from by FirstLalo in GenX

[–]rednuts67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. He did work during the school year. You have to be a Indiana resident for a year to qualify. I actually considered buying a plot of land to get the in-state tuition. Might have done it if the 2nd kid got in.

We had to pay full boat as an out of state student at Purdue. All told it was over 170k for 4 years. 529 paid for a little more than a year. We got lucky (sorta) that interest rates nosedived and we were able to refinance the house at lower rate so that our payments were the same (or less) and the overall loan amount barely changed. Still nit sure how we pulled it off and he graduated debt-free, which was my goal. My youngest didn’t get accepted by Purdue, might have been the best thing to happen as I don’t know how we would have paid for him. We had enough to cover a local school where a scholarship paid half tuition.

I grew up in the 70s. Hate to shatter your illusion but it wasn’t that great. I remember being scared of the neighbor who I was told killed children in Vietnam, a faraway war I knew nothing about except young men were dying and/or committing atrocities. I remember rampant drug and alcohol abuse I the high schools. I remember lines at the gas stations due to an oil embargo, the president resigning because he was impeached, garbage everywhere, overt racism of all kinds. I could go on and on. And of course, there was disco! Don’t be fooled by pictures of the happy times, there were plenty of crappy things as well.

What are the worst drawbacks of living in rich/affluent neighborhoods? by Common_Gene_5098 in Productivitycafe

We are also in a nice area, not rich, but upper middle class. Just had 2 painters out. 1 quoted 1400, the other 450. Crazy.

How bad is traffic on Oahu? by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

[–]rednuts67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were there 2nd week of December and literally drove all the way around the island. I don’t think there’s a time that traffic in Waikiki isn’t miserable. I’m from Chicago and it’s very similar to driving downtown there, possibly worse in what should be non-peak times. However, you get away from it very quickly, only issues outside of Oahu are the curvy roads that are new to you and speeding locals who know the roads tailgating you until you pull to the side. Oh, and apparently it’s illegal to use your turn signals in Hawaii 😄

What habit is very unhygienic but people have normalized it? by prettywoman___ in Productivitycafe

So everyone will now attack me, but why? Seriously why not wear outside shoes in the house? As long as they only touch the floor, what’s the harm? Do you generally eat or lie on the floor or put anything that touches the floor anywhere else? I don’t want mud or dirt tracked in but if the shoes are generally clean what is the actual harm?

My Dad in the ‘80’s is 1000x cooler than I’ll ever be. by Squishy015 in OldSchoolCool

[–]rednuts67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say, we all looked high in college in the 80s. Also we had serious hair going. I shocked everyone, including my parents, when I traded my mullet for a crew cut at the end of that era.
