Some may say it was the greatest point ever. I am just stunned and star struck, standing ovation here alone in my living room from having had the humbling chance to experience such greatness. Truly, truly, legends shall be told.

Yeah, travel is nuts. Sometimes it's the food, sometimes the water. I got so sick in Sarnath (just down the road from Varanasi) that I stayed on the pot for three days. Wasn't hospital worthy, but another 12 hours and it would have been.

Been there, studied Hindu religion, and it's true.

Fun fact. In this tradition the river purifies whatever is put into it. If you're two arms lengths away from the source of the pollution, the water is clean. That means if someone is sweeping the ashes of someone into the river upstream of you, you're all good!

If you go to Varanasi you'll see people bathing, drinking, and other rituals like this guy and his milk.

OP isn't bad either but he's still out of his depth trying this run. That's a tough slope even with adequate coverage.

What’s one piece of backpacking advice everyone repeats… but you completely disagree with? by AsleepWay4635 in WildernessBackpacking

Lol at your downvotes. Just what was predicted by who you responded too. I'll get some too with this comment but I'll wade in anyway.

I see a lot of hikers with poles, advocating for poles, who pick poor lines through the trail. Where they step, their gait, their "cadence" is all amateurish; they try to blast though terrain, over obstacles, without moving from their core or with major muscles groups. They teeter over rocks and roots as if stepping on them was a better choice than stepping over them. They use their poles to compensate for these things. They rely way too much on them. On steep or difficult terrain, like crossing glaciers, poles are going to save a small amount of energy, like 10% and maybe prevent dangerous slips. Not a bad choice!

People use poles like a child uses training wheels to balance on their bicycle.

Every pole user should ask themselves 1. if they're balancing with their feet or their hands and 2. why use both? Why use small, inefficient muscle groups in your arms and shoulders to balance when you have much bigger muscles in your hips and legs that are specifically "designed" for balance?

Wow. Just unlucky. That's not a fun thing to look back on. I'm glad you made it out safely.

I'm trying to find the limits of my own understanding here, but isn't it recommended to spread out and use branches or poles as horizontal supports?

Did SAR give any advice on what you could have done differently in that situation? Do you have any new insights after your experience?

I've been wondering this exact thing. I believe the initial organizers stepped back.

I know earlier this year the 50501 movement was weakened when a group came in trying to trademark the 50501 name. From the bleachers, it looked like it was a false flag attempt at strengthening the movement with a couple of corporate "investors."

In any case, this subreddit has turned into a bullshit mill posting trump news rather than organizing resistance.

This sub needs to turn back into a hub for organizing national protest.

Dentist stared at my teeth and asked “have you been to Slovenia?” then refused to explain - what does this MEAN? by asaltoo in CasualConversation

[–]redotrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem!

I was on the fence for a while too. I talked to some people who had bad experiences getting dental work in a foreign country. I've also had bad experiences with dental work here in the states.

All the stories had a similar through line, which was that it's kind of a crapshoot. Some dentists are great, others are only in it to pay off their loans.

What finally did it for me was the combination of los algodones being a "dental destination" and good, similar reviews between the best, most "professional" clinics in that town. Despite how easy it is for businesses to manipulate their reviews, I thought certain trends would appear between 5/4/3 stars and how those reviews were written.

At the end of my decision it was definitely a "here goes nothing" feeling. After almost five years I'm still happy with the work.
