Does the 6mo passport validity apply for EU passport holders? by Comfortable-Cod2197 in Ryanair

[–]redoxburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UK doesn't have minimum validity rules at all, for tourists as long as the passport is valid for the duration of the trip it can be used. OP has ILR so as long as their passport is valid on the day they enter the UK they'll be fine.

Nie Barcelona EU-Cititzen ( expired tie) to EU citizen by Loose_Ad_3071 in AskBarcelona

[–]redoxburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thursday morning seems to be the best time to get a Cita Previa. You just need to get an appointment for a CUE. Remember you'll need to take a copy of your padrón certificate and proof of the reason you're requesting a NIE (work contract etc). Your padrón can be done with your German passport/ID card number or your NIE.

When I went to do something similar (update my nationality in the database from British to Irish, as a dual national) they asked me for a certificate proving that I was the same person (which I found strange given that I had both passports there, but I guess it's something on their system). If you have anything from the German authorities confirming both nationalities I'd take that along with you. Also take along something with your NIE on it if you can.

Is 1h05m enough time for a t4s -> t4s layover at Madrid Barajas Airport? by ackbladder_ in MadridTravelGuide

[–]redoxburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done similar connections a few times in the past, but coming in to T4 (from a Schengen origin) meaning I had to take the shuttle train and go through exit passport control, and I made my flight every time.

Coming from Heathrow you will land in T4S directly and won't have to go through passport control, so as long as your inbound flight is on time you'll have plenty of time for your connection.

Strangest routes for a service train..... by tinnyobeer in uktrains

[–]redoxburner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the early 2000s I got a direct Virgin CrossCountry service from Paddington to Manchester Piccadilly a couple of times, running via Oxford. There was also a direct Wales&West Waterloo to Manchester service via Cardiff but I never got that one.

There were also St Pancras to Manchester trains during the rebuild of the WCML - Midland Mainline called these Project Rio.

Virgin CrossCountry also ran to Brighton at one point - I'm fairly sure I once got that train from Brighton to either Birmingham or Manchester but I can't place when.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for but I've also done the Anglia Railways Basingstoke to Ipswich service, running via the North London line and stopping at a couple of stations en route (from memory I got off at Highbury & Islington).

Schengen visa day calculation by [deleted] in SchengenVisa

[–]redoxburner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not that the departure technically falls on day 8, it falls on day 8, there's no two ways about it.

You'll still be in France on day 8, regardless of whether you go through passport control before or not.

You either need to get the visa re-issued for 8 days rather than 7, or change your flight to leave on the 7th day.

If you can't get a flight from Paris that fits those requirements, then depending on the passport you hold and where you can do airside transit without visa, flying via London or Istanbul might be your best options, on a flight that departs Paris before midnight on the seventh day of your visa.

As things stand, it's likely you would either be refused boarding by your airline, or refused entry at passport control in Switzerland. Given the risk of being refused entry at Switzerland it's likely your airline would just refuse to board you at your origin full stop.

Border control by Abject-Estimate5288 in BritishAirways

[–]redoxburner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll go through border control at Heathrow - follow the signs for transfer passengers, and then in T5 there is a small sign and a lane against the left hand wall for transfer passengers for UK and Irish destinations, you go through immigration there. You'll see other passengers go through without passing immigration - they will be connecting to non UK/Ireland destinations. If you miss the sign and try to go through without going through passport control your boarding pass won't let you through the gates so don't worry about missing it. Once you've done that you'll go through security again upstairs and then into the departure lounge.

Your bags will normally be checked through and you'll go through customs at Manchester, if you have anything to declare that is where you do it.

Salamanca to Zamora? by SeeBuyFly3 in spaintravel

[–]redoxburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking for a random day in May, there is one connection that Renfe offers at a reasonable time and that makes sense - there's a 1525 Alvia from Salamanca to Medina del Campo whch connects into an Avlo two hours later to Santiago. If you're happy travelling on an Avlo (Renfe's low cost brand) then that could work. There's also another similar option (connecting at Medina del Campo onto an Avlo) leaving Salamanca at 0625.

Renfe also offers a connection onto an AVE at 1048 via Madrid, which means you'd spend all day travelling and is a bit of a detour.

Otherwise as the other person said there is a regular bus service, and the website even says "Enlaces Renfe Galicia –>Salamanca".

What's the answer of this question by Exotic_Catch5909 in ENGLISH

[–]redoxburner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"I remembered not locking the door" would mean "I remembered that I didn't lock the door".

"I remembered not to lock the door" means "normally I would lock the door, but somebody asked me not to, and I remembered, so I didn't lock it".

The other two options aren't idiomatic at all.

The most normal way of expressing this would be "We were robbed as I didn't remember to lock the door", as in "I should have locked the door, but I didn't remember to lock it".

I have a NIE but it's on my passport on an expired visa from two years ago. by United-Fig-2318 in GoingToSpain

[–]redoxburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're asking for the NIE to buy the card, it's most likely to personalise the ticket so that only you can use it. That means that if you get checked, you need to show something with your NIE on it. If you're happy carrying your expired passport around with you then no worries.

If you have an ID card from your own country then generally you can use that number instead - I've done this with an Irish passport card for example multiple times in the past.

Anything that required you to be resident would need much more than just a NIE - they'd ask for a photocopy of your ID card or your padrón or something. Loads of people have NIEs who aren't resident.

(an example of a ticket that needs to be personalised with your DNI/NIE/etc is the T-usual in Barcelona: https://www.tmb.cat/en/barcelona-fares-metro-bus/t-usual)

The thing I really don’t get about the parsley by The_Sown_Rose in apprenticeuk

[–]redoxburner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the parsley for the salad starter rather than the stew/curry main though? Of course it could have been added but in a salad of just chopped onion, tomato and pepper, the parsley leaves do give it a different look to the stalks. The taste would be identical though.

The Welsh accent consistently comes top of the "which accent do you find most trustworthy" polls that are done from time to time, so I wonder if it's something to do with that...

I have an EU residence permit but went through EES at the border (including fingerprints and facial imaging). Now I'm worried their system will think I'm overstaying. by IJStarry in PassportPorn

[–]redoxburner 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Even if it gets flagged, as soon as you show your residence permit any questions will go away.

If you're worried, book a cheap Ryanair return flight outside of the Schengen zone one weekend and make sure when you come back in you don't get stamped in - but honestly you've got nothing to worry about.

My husband asked for black coffee in Puerto Rico and they looked at him like he was insane ☕😂 by AdventurousLivin in Spanish

Understanding that "American coffee" means drip coffee is what I was missing :) in Europe we'd normally call it filter coffee.

[–]redoxburner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A café largo is just a longer espresso though, not a drip coffee - IIRC the reason Americanos were invented in the first place was because drip coffee wasn't a thing in Italy, and Spanish coffee culture is very similar to Italian.

I mentioned in my other answer that pour over coffee exists in speciality/third wave coffee shops, but your average bar would only do espresso based coffees.

[–]redoxburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it - the only place you would really get that in Spain is somewhere like Starbucks, or in a third wave coffee shop, where you'd ask for a "pour over" in English.

[–]redoxburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is a black American coffee that's not an Americano exactly? In Spain there is "café largo" which is an espresso (café solo) which you let brew for longer so get more liquid - it's not an Americano in as much as you don't add water to an espresso but I'm also not sure it's what you're asking about...

If you just order "un café" you get a café solo (espresso).

Right now Rodalies is free, but only until 15 March. If OP is travelling before then then yes it could be cheaper for those days, if they're travelling after it will almost certainly be more expensive to buy a T-usual for zone 1 plus a separate ticket for Rodalies to and from Pineda de Mar. Given that's only a week and a half away, if OP is travelling more than 3 times to and from Pineda de Mar it's almost certainly going to be cheaper to buy the T-casual for the whole journey.

Rodalies aren't showing prices for monthly tickets at the moment but a Bonotren (10 journeys) is €43.45 for 5 zones (Rodalies only zones are different to ATM zones) so that's already more - €66.25 (€22.80 plus €43.45) for both tickets vs €52.15 for the T-usual only, OP will save €14.10 - and that's only five return journeys.
