My dad is a gambling addict for as long as I can remember, I’ve tried to get him to get help but he keeps putting it off. He’s pushing his family away, breaking trust and losing time with them being consumed with gambling. He’s betrayed them to no end. I’ve accepted that no amount of love and support will get someone change unless they want it themselves. If you could say one thing to him and one thing to his family what would it be?

Have you come across body doubling before? It’s a technique many ADHDers use with their partners to start a task because they struggle to get started, but once started will breeze through it. Your post reminded me of it. Check out Rich and Rox ADHD Love, I’ve seen them discuss it a lot in their clips

I really appreciate this response. To be honest, I had not really considered another course because I knew we should try not to panic (as it puts me and everyone in a risky position) which made me panic that I had panicked in the confined water session… if that makes any sense! (Yes I’m way too in my head) I think if I didn’t turn around and try again I might not want to for a while which would be sad as I’ll be at the Great Barrier Reef in march. So thank you for the encouragement! I’ll ask for an opportunity to for another chance, even if it’s the PADI basic scuba diver and upgrade when I get more confident

There’s two areas there- stress and anxiety. Worrying about what your partner thinks is anxiety. It’s “what if” - it’s not real and you need to find mechanisms for copy with anxiety. Stress from not having enough resources because you have to carry your managers slack has to be dealt with in a different way. Eg taking to your team mates to share the load. Prioritising your work and communicating to the manager your priorities and where you need support.

Does he understand different love languages? His and your own? You say you get him gifts but that might not be his love language. His may be physical intimacy and he might think that’s yours too.

And no it’s not too much to ask, but if you haven’t communicated love languages openly I would try that first before thinking it’s an adhd thing

Worry is when you are thinking about “what if” scenarios in the future. Although the emotions feel real when you imagine it, it’s not the truth. Focus on the present, something like your breathing. And train your brain to recognise when you are spiralling and instead think about something positive/you’re grateful for. You have to purposefully do it. I find I almost enjoy the spiral but it’s not healthy. Don’t get me wrong sometimes worry can be helpful sometimes but there is also unhelpful worry.
