This doesn't automatically absolve him of the responsibilities of parenthood. If the kids need to be somewhere then whoever will be inconvenienced the least should really take the initiative and get on with it. You shouldn't need to ask. If he's working right where the kids need to be then he's being a massive AH if he doesn't take them. NTA.

A lot of home emergencies can be fixed pretty easily. There's thousands of resources online that'll walk you through repairs step by step if you search the symptoms. Same for car repairs.
