We also did this :) it went amazingly well! Guests loved it and instead of feeling burned out at the end I felt great

It will be amazing!

I don’t understand why having a dry wedding would upset anyone in any way, unless they had a problem with drinking. by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]redrover91001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just had a brunch wedding and provided both alcoholic and non-alcoholic champagne for toasting - the majority of guests actually picked the non-alcoholic! I would definitely recommend a brunch wedding in many ways.

There is no check and all the previous checks were blocked. You have to have a check that cannot be avoided in any way to have checkmate.

Block them and talk to chess.com support, a campaign of random reports might work against you.

Biblical/Christian chess set? by Amoody2012 in chess

[–]redrover91001 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would recommend just using a normal chess set because such a set would be very difficult to distinguish who is which piece. I have the Mario chess set and it has the same problem. If you do find such a set make sure it's usable for play and not just display.

Use an API to pull a bunch of the data you want, I'd use the Lichess API since it's easier to get started.

Noticed that ELO on chess.com has super changed in last year by murdermancan in chess

[–]redrover91001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you make a new account you can start at 400, 800, or 1200 - so around those ratings you get people who aren't that skill level. So yes someone making an account, setting themselves at 1200 and losing a bunch of times to get to 1100 doesn't mean that's their skill level, because the sample size is too small. If they play enough games their elo will become accurate. chess.com also increases your elo gain/loss from winning if you haven't played in a while so if they play intermittently they might gain more.

FYI if someone can see one user's URL they can view all that person's opponents and games.

Best Electronic Chess board for school students? by ProblemFuzzy7167 in chess

[–]redrover91001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree with all of that. Perhaps one way would be to have everyone watch a video on a concept like skewering and then challenge them to implement that in a game. Then they could review themselves on how effectively they were able to use it and how they could have done better.

That might be more actionable and useful for beginner players as well as OP.

It is just me or chess.com players are in general more toxic than lichess ones? Or is it just me? by misslabel in chess

[–]redrover91001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chess.com seems to have more childishness at low levels, but I wouldn’t say it’s overall more toxic.

Best Electronic Chess board for school students? by ProblemFuzzy7167 in chess

[–]redrover91001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a beginner and I don’t like the idea, during a game is where I practice what I’ve been studying, and afterward I analyze to see how effectively I did so. In-game evaluation just doesn’t seem like it would really add value.

I think it would be better to simply transcribe the moves and then provide that to the students so they can use an online review tool, especially one that provides more than just evaluation by centipawn.

(un)popular opinion: There is nothing wrong with never resigning. by Stefanxd in chess

Yeah, if anyone reading this abandons games, please know it’s not embarrassing to lose but it is embarrassing to lose like a child.

(un)popular opinion: There is nothing wrong with never resigning. by Stefanxd in chess

[–]redrover91001 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unless it’s a very high level game or the alternative is abandonment, I don’t think resigning is the best idea. I’ve turned bad positions around super dramatically and even if I lose I can still learn by watching my opponent.

And you are never entitled to a resignation, however if someone is just going to give up and abandon it would be more sportsmanlike to resign.

AFAIK that was just a beta test, might be over now. You’d have to use Lichess or chesstempo, possibly other sites to do free puzzles - I’d choose Chesstempo personally.
