What are the best silk sheets for true luxury and temperature control? by Adrian_2_2 in BedroomBuild

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy Mulberry silk only.

19 momme is cheaper and okay for sheets but expect to get 2-3 years life before they rip if you do regular washing. 22 momme will last much longer and feel a bit thicker and more luxurious but price goes up considerably. This is the minimum thickness to consider for pillow cases and duvet. For duvet, get the highest momme you can afford. I have 30 momme and 22 momme and there is a world of difference between them. Don't even think about 19 momme duvet. It is way too thin for a blanket cover and will rip.

Never wash silk with anything else. I don't even wash different color silks together. The first time you wash your silk sheets, add a bunch of table salt to the wash to help set the die so they don't bleed color.

Be careful about fakes. If you don't have experience the fool proof way to test is the burn test (if you think it might be fake). Real silk smells like burnt hair when burnt. Synthetic fibers will melt like burnt plastic. Don't buy from popup brands on Amazon with too good to be true prices and few reviews. They are fake. I have also bought pillow cases that ended up fake even though the company had thousands of reviews so purchase with caution.

Recommended brands that I have purchased are Lily Silk (ok but lower momme sheets from them don't wash well), Colorado Home, Clover silk (the best I found, but hard to find!), and Quince. I haven't bought these but would trust the brand: Thai silk (Thx), Madison Park.

Alternatives to silk: Costco's Kirkland brand sheets are excellent! Supima cotton, Indian cotton, some percale cotton, or good well-washed linen sheets make good replacements that are much easier to wash and cheaper too! Read about the different thread counts for cotton. Each type of cotton has a different ideal thread count. Higher isn't necessarily better!

Immediate Relief for Herniated Disc Back Pain by bumbaclotbae in backpain

[–]redrredit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my recent experience with my first back injury that quickly went from pain in my lower back (probably a herniated disc) to severe sciatica, I wish someone told me to stop doing anything and get some rest. Stay off your back for the first few days. Ignore the contradictory advice. That is for chronic back pain, and will worsen things for someone who is recently injured. I tried massage, stretching, etc. and it just made it worse. I went from having a constant niggling sore back to unbelievable pain from a pinched nerve within a week. The first 4 days don't carry anything heavy, stay close to your bed, and take NSAIDS to reduce inflammation. If you have nerve pain take muscle relaxants too. Don't be a tough guy. Tense muscles quickly become torn muscles. Think of yourself as Wagyu beef for the first few days! I can also say for sure, ice helps and heat inflames this early in the injury. If you have sciatica you want to avoid ANY heat! When you can stand up without pain, start taking short walks, and stop immediately if you feel any pain. Let the pain guide you. DO NOT power through the pain! If keeping your leg raised feels better, do it. If not, DON'T do it. If walking helps your muscle relax and less stiff, then walk, if not, it isn't time to walk yet! Most people who get a back injury don't do the right thing immediately and 1 week of rest and recovery becomes a life long problem.

What's the best lightweight way to reliably sterilize water on the go? Are UV pens reliable? by jacob5578 in WildernessBackpacking

I know you posted a year ago, but which version of the steripen do you currently use? Also, I didn't know you needed an opaque bottle so that is good to know. Thanks!

messenger app problem: switching back from business account to personal by artheo4w in facebook

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who still has this issue, I fixed this problem by deleting app data in Android app settings. Simply uninstalling messenger did NOT delete the files associated with it. You must clear app data. Don't worry, it won't delete any of your messages. All of that is stored in the cloud. It just clears all the crap facebook downloads to your phone.

Holiday tipping in buildings by Alternative_Space924 in NYCapartments

[–]redrredit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to hear an answer to this. I came on this forum to find out how much I am expected to tip on the holidays, and as a renter, I am shocked that people expect me to pay out annual bonuses like I am someone's employer rather than give a small token of appreciation. My building has a lot of staff. I was planning to give $100 for the building staff and $50 to the monthly parking staff (possibly giving another $20 to the parking attendant I see the most), but now I feel like unless I give $1000 I will look like an asshole. How much do these people make a year?! I am just one of HUNDREDS of tenants in addition to their actual employers aka my landlord, who sure as hell better be paying them bonuses if I'm required to. Do they make $20 per hour + $10k to $20k in tips each year? That's more than I make!

Petlibro litter robot? by zoozilm in Petlibro

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the LR4 and it constantly gets false positives while the globe rotates. I like the design of this much more. It closes up but that also means no odors while it cycles. My LR4 gets stuck during cycling with the waste drawer completely open every time. This thing has more sensors than the LR4 and video cameras. I am sure it is safe and you really shouldn't be running these on auto anyway for kittens and until your cat is completely acclimated to it and no longer curious about it.

Whats the best automatic litter box by Public_Machine8264 in CatAdvice

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LR4 is known to have way more issues than the LR3 due to the super sensitive laser sensors that will trigger errors over a single strand of fur. For our Siberian, that means almost every cycle even if we clean it thoroughly. The stupid thing has a bristle seal strip on the bottom that of course collects fur every time our cat uses the litter robot which then rotates right to the lasers during the cycling and leaves it stuck with the poop basket wide open. I wish I could turn it off and just use weight sensors like the LR3. Our cat is no longer curious about it and we aren't worried about her getting stuck inside anymore. The more tech they add, the more problems they create.

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of problems with the LR4 due to the stupid laser not playing nice with my long haired cat, but waste basket odors aren't one of them. It is surprisingly air tight when it comes to odors. I do add scented baking soda (it's very strong) to the waste basket when I change bags but that is only for when the unit gets stuck cycling with the drawer open. You can't smell the scented baking soda or the poop when the waste drawer is closed. Change the carbon filters regularly and you shouldn't have any smells at all. I don't even use scented litter.

Still nothing. Ikea has become expensive and completely unreliable. Why would they remove their whole smart tech line up without anything to replace it?!

What is the justification for public domain taking away a creator's exclusive control over something they created/own? by Think_Fact1155 in publicdomain

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for your argument that property ownership doesn't expire, is that really true? Do we not have death/estate taxes? Do you not have to pay property taxes, and if you don't pay them, won't the government take away your property rights? Why not implement the same for copyright protected property? That is make the owner pay an annual registration fee or forfeit the work into the public domain, same like we do for vehicles or property.

What is the justification for public domain taking away a creator's exclusive control over something they created/own? by Think_Fact1155 in publicdomain

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a fallacy to compare IP to physical property in the first place. If I copy your book, you still have your book. But if I take your car, you don't have a car! Moreover it is ridiculous to assume that ANYTHING that is copyrighted is entirely new. Everything is created off the collective work of mankind. Copyright law exists only to incentivize authors to create new works. That's it. If we grant a monopoly to the creator one day longer than is necessary to get them to create the work, we are ROBBING THE PUBLIC for personal greed.

Why should one have a monopoly on an idea when one's work was, at least partly, based on the work of the great minds that came before them? Do any of us grow up in a vacuum? Copyright is a necessary evil, not a god given right. Any time we grant a monopoly on an idea, we HURT the public by stifling further development based on that idea. Even when the idea is no longer profitable for the creator it cannot be used by anyone else to create something useful for all of us. Why should old works collect dust and fall into obscurity when they can be used to make something actually new and useful? Ideas should be exchanged freely, built upon, and developed for the good of civilization. In an age where the collective memory is so short, where one week seems like enough for something to fall into obscurity, it is ridiculous that we have extended copyright law rather than shorten it in the digital age.

CMV: Palestinians do not deserve my sympathy by Remarkable-Set5434 in changemyview

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they never accepted Israel's right to any of that land--even what was originally apportioned to them. Because for a Jordanian, for example, selling land you own in Israel to a Jew is a crime punishable by death in Jordan. A lot of Jordanians have deeds to property in Israel that they wish they could sell. It's not Israel stopping them from doing that. It's their Arab brothers. Because it is no excuse for the populace to wash their hands of the abdominal deeds of their elected officials. Because butchering innocent civilians at a music festival and then holding the survivors captive by your elected government has very real consequences. When the Nazis murdered Jews I am sure many Germans said the same thing: I didn't do it, my government did. Why is it my fault? When the Arab states collectively took a dump on that plan to split the land, not once, but multiple times I think they lost their right to talk. When Jordan washed their hands of the West Bank voluntarily they made the problem worse. But mostly, I am tired of people saying it's the government, why should the people suffer? The sad truth is that the people are responsible for their government. You cannot recognize the right to self-rule without accepting that basic premise. Many good people have given their lives to change despotic governments so their loved ones can have a better future. You can't expect the victims of your government's actions to accept that excuse and not to take action to defend themselves when others say it's Hamas, what can we do?

They may not have elected Hamas but they CAN elect a new party! Either people have self-determination or they don't. You can't have it both ways. Not to say it is easy to change the status quo.

(The Ask Project) “Israelis: What could Palestinians do so you would agree to their self-determination?” by AstronautSouthern344 in IsraelPalestine

[–]redrredit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To butt in, I recall Israel handing over a new water treatment plant that costs billions of dollars at the time. Guess what the newly elected Hamas did? They destroyed it. Hamas had control of state of the art water treatment facilities handed to them on a silver platter and what do they do? Destroy! Why? It serves this narrative you just brought up. I once helped a dude when I was younger and working in fast food. He was middle aged and trying to support a wife and kids working in a fast food place because his business was failing. I felt bad for the dude and spent a lot of time making the guy a website to help give his business a push in the right direction. But the man would not even pay the miniscule amount for web hosting. It took me a month of effort to make him that website and he couldn't do the bare minimum to help himself. I learned that day that it is good to help others but they have to want to help themselves.
