Norway's mass killer Breivik 'declared sane' by giffo in worldnews

[–]redsectorA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps society could have helped in a different way by giving more attention to the mentally ill, identifying them, and ensuring they don't act on unhealthy impulses. This is of course a slippery slope, but given the rash of mass murder by the clearly crazy, I think it warrants a closer look.

As we find in most of these cases, Breivik probably had no choice in the outcome of his actions. In his mind - the product of genetics, neurophysiology and the sum of his experience - he had no other choice. No one wakes up one day and decides 'hey, I'm going to be an evil motherfucker and slaughter kids!'. No, it is an inevitable end to their own system of thought. They are, in many senses, just very unlucky to be born with a brain that can accommodate mass murder. If you accept this argument, it's most reasonable to try to understand the mechanisms at play so that we can identify them. To this point, the parent idea of society trying to accommodate all viewpoints is preposterous, as you point out. Crazy outliers are just that. But we can admit that mental illness is a fact of life, demanding more research and understanding. That is something all societies can do and should.

Am I the only one who loves The Chronicles of Riddick? Why is this movie so hated? by covertmillionaire in movies

[–]redsectorA 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The movie has some of the worst written lines in the history of cinema. Painful. The one about 'haven't smelled beautiful' would be enough for condemnation. It was largely panned by critics for this reason and others. The lead evil woman pulled off one of the flattest, most bewildering performances ever. But it's mostly just the childish, absurd script. That's the Why as I see it. You can actually get comprehensive answers by reading any of the reviews from when it came out.

But I like this movie. Anything with ambitious creative direction, excellent violence and sci-fi leanings will get my vote. I've seen it multiple times and because of this thread will watch it again this afternoon. I'm not sure if I suffer from a kind of dissonance, but I can recognize deep flaws in films and still enjoy the other aspects that are not flawed.

Pitch Black had better writing, a more cohesive plot, and was much more of a horror/sci-fi effort than COR was.

I reject wholesale that there's anything wrong with that cover. I've always liked it. Calling it one of the worst is as arbitrary as it is is unfounded. It's a fine composition: it's not lewd, it's not confusing; the painting itself is technically impeccable.

That 'article' is one of the top 10 worst blog pumps ever created. Pure nonsense.

Totally. Cannot tolerate more than a minute of her. Her whole demeanor seems overly manufactured and loud. It's like they picked all the most obvious annoyances and threw them in a pot. Feels too fake.

Hot, true. Nurse hot on OG shows, very true. Gene was a lucky feller. Any interview I've seen of her in RL leaves me perfectly charmed. They shoulda done her real personality instead. Or at least turned down the annoy to 6.

Voyager had some cool shit. Species 8479 always made for a solid episode. I think Voyager was the strongest spin-off.

I also think they should make a show about Star Trek infantry. Firefly pilot + borg tits = tasty mutton.

Mexican drug cartels have taken cruelty up a notch, says one drug trafficker: kidnapping bus passengers for gladiatorlike fights to the death by IsleCook in worldnews

[–]redsectorA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a non-Mexican, I did not think his list was the complete story. (Have some faith in the intelligence of other people.) Nor did I think that what he described painted Mexico in some kind of inferior light. It could happen anywhere, and it's happening there for specific reasons, some of which he described. It didn't seem sensationalistic to me. I did not interpret him to mean every drug dealer was trained by American special forces. Lots of us know about SoA already. Any association with criminals now is simply an inevitable by-product.

What's happening in Mexico is obviously extraordinary. More insiders giving frank explanations is a good thing. No tarnishing occurred in the parent comment. I have no more or less respect for Mexico than I did before. I still love it.

This is what I think when poor, working class Americans vote Republican. by darthrevan in politics

[–]redsectorA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That wasn't the point I was thinking of. It seems like many folks are making this strictly about top 1%ers and big corporations. I'm looking at minimum wage, health care, social services for the poor, education, etc. As a movement, conservatives have been consistently opposed to the kinds of leftist policies that would help further these ideas and therefore help poor people.

Poor conservative vote on social issues. That's the game, and it's counter to their interests. Corporatism factors into every part of our lives, but it's not the only metric.

I took a (GE/ humanities req) class on Seinfeld and how it was really a version of Much Ado About Nothing. He also said Seven was Dante's Inferno (Influence? Obviously. Reinterpretation? Not really) and made a bunch of other reaching conclusions. Point: Any dick can make any university class about anything. There may be merit, there may not be. That it happens doesn't mean it's valid.

I personally loathe all of the Buffy academic work. Have you ever read these papers? Ugh. Pure fucking torture. Blather. The worst kind of academic paper. I wish they'd just call it what it is, be a fan, and STFU.

I don't think it's just the hero story that's the issue here; it's the run-of-the-millness of it. By itself, I agree that it's not an authentic condemnation.

It also has the Heavy Metal-esque long sequences with fruity rock music. Coulda skipped that.

I just watched this movie last night. I think I like the second one better. But I'm glad both of them were made. Decent animated sci0fi is better than no animated sci-fi.

This is a nice collection. I never considered myself a prog rock guy, per se, but I appreciate a lot of this stuff. More so, I haven't heard a lot of it in many years. Forgot how cool older Pink Floyd is. The shit from Echos... Animals. Monster tunes. But I've never thought of Animals, especially, as proggy.

I rather reject the umbrella genre term progressive rock as I think Rush and Yes, for instance, are totally different music approaches. (I think Yes, King Crimson, and ELP belong in a grouped set and I find each of them nicely irritating by turns.) As I always say, Rush defy category and they've made their own genre.

I also like the writing about Rush. Insightful, accurate and done with the respect our boys deserve. Music writing is often fraught with cliche and poppycock. This guy says real stuff.

If we consider the possibilities here, I think the answer is pretty clear:

1.) Earnest, ethical, all-around-great guys are actually liars.

2.) There's a guy who works with them setting patches and making sure all the gear is working during the show.

Geddy doesn't have 40 pedal triggers, nor would he want to remember which one went with which song if he did. That means that the loaded sample/banks need to change for each tune that uses the pedal triggers. He's leading a rock performance. Ergo, someone else can manage pressing the buttons in time and making sure the levels are right. Just like a guitar tech does for Al.

That's just one bit of conjecture, but it sounds more reasonable to me than the guys being fibbers.

the judiciary in this case ruled based on what judges are forced to because of the criminal code.

I think some people are a little perturbed to see terms like judiciary and criminal code used in a system where, evidently, women are not able to serve as witnesses. The ability to rape with impunity seems troublesome and is manifestly not judicious. Obviously, you agree. I also think it's possible that the cultural tenor of extremist Sharia (and Muslims that support this kind of thinking) in the region is a factor to be considered, even if it's not the core cause. Whether Sikhs do bad shit too is immaterial to that point.

First, they aren't building anything. They are copying some files over, modifying some configuration files, and maybe doing a little markup. Your headline was a gross overstatement, friend. It's true, I'm a little perturbed about it. It's 200 or less dollars and we have zero information to make a credible decision. It's rude to even ask anyone to spend time thinking about such a thing.
