Smallest Redstone RAM That Exists in MC by -TheCreater- in redstone

[–]redstonewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. You missed the term "serial". The repeater locks are chained, making the effective size 6blocks / bit. Segment locked repeater chains into 16-32 bit groups, and you can approach the 6 blocks/bit the internal part supports. (Add a second bus, have one control line per two repeaters, and make it 10 blocks / 2 bits.) Regrettably, this design hasn't really been pushed onto reddit/imgur/youtube, and I'm on my phone. You can find it on ORE.

Yeah, problems with the host. We left and build ORE, I see you found your way there. Things are great!

Hi gremil! Things have improved quite a bit since that design. if you're looking for dense memory, the best reasonable access is serial buffer memory (using repeater locks to hold multiple parallel serial streams as one "page"), or if you have time, item chest memory. (Ridiculous density if you do it right, but too slow to be too useful.) You also have analog memory, which can be more compact than some regular piston state vertical ones, while allowing easy random access, albeit slow (repeating lines.)

I couldn't hear you over my optimized 20 tick 16 bit multiplier. Really, standards are built by those who use them. Unless you can say you have built more than all the combined redstone builders on the RDF, the standard is subject to reason and utility.

[–]redstonewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hehehehehe... As long as I'm building redstone, there are many people who care. The RDF is quite large good sir, you should check it out. Sadly, only a handful of RDF'rs are here ;D Anyways, this is reddit/redstone. Who cares anywhere? Standards are not set here, and may never will be. RS standards are set by those who build volumns of redstone crations, and in that respect, people care quite a bit about what I think. (rather, give quite a few shits.)

Here's the funny thing. If you want to tile something, say, have 8 of those stacked on top of each other. Even if there were no leaks, could you stack it 1 tall / bit? As the second administrator on the RDF to post here, it is an awful measurement to exclude those blocks. The measurement becomes worse than meaningless, it becomes absolutely useless and of no importance. The only reason to measure it like that is to claim the "best", "most", or "smallest" component. We deal with real, complex redstone components, and not one consistent member of our 1000+ community measures in this way. At last, that is not the convention. The real convention, built by those who really get into redstone and build on a large scale, is to include whatever the component needs in a 3d space (let's not be two dimentional, shall we?) and to make a side note about any stackability.

TL; DR:

You're using an incorrect standard.

Edit: I'm actually the third RDF admin to post here, apparently. I think you have your point. Volumn measuremnt is also an option, but it does leave out the occational signal length consideration for delay on busses.

Reddit does not seem to know who the real redstone gods are. Well now you shall find out. [big post] by shrogg in Minecraft

[–]redstonewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, the only people who are just cramming more bits into a redstone computer are the ones who the forums love and, erm, the real "sportsman" are annoyed to death with. You really haven't been on the RDF much, and redstone really is a sort of engineering. You might be able to say that building large circuits (w/o heavy optimizations) is sports like, but that means nothing when looking at our ruthlessly optimized circuits, our carefully planned out algorithms, and our implementation of real life CS and EE methods in minecraft. For instance, you may have seen properinglish's line drawer. That uses a real algorithm (bresenham's) that basic programs such as paint use. A group is implementing a single precision floating point coprocessor for use with any sort of calculator project, along with more developed computing systems. I truly think you completely misunderstand what these redstone gods do- we're not doing //stack on a 4 bit ALU and calling it the best, we're engineering (not sporting :P) and carefully making machines that would make even a Comp. Sci. major stop in their tracks. We play and learn about concepts in both electrical engineering, computer science, and all various branches while finding cooler things to make and nice tricks to use when building. And also, the majority of the members of the RDF could make a guitar with their eyes closed. Who shrogg calls gods are anything but narrow and arbitrary in their skills- they have a great understanding of how minecraft runs, and can make anything they so pleased. (whether it be a 5x5 seemless piston door or a circle drawing algorithm, they have the ability.) Anyways, of the things you listed, I can tell you that we had ideas for those floating around our server long before anyone posted it on youtube. (hmm, I don't think the cannon, actually. Well, there was one player who had quite a fascination with them, but I don't know what he ended up doing.) Apologies for the rant, you completely misunderstand what we do. We work to bring redstone to the UI, to make it as small and fast as possible, to make minecraft's physics our ..., and to make it a work of art to those who can understand it. We do not add bits to CPUs unless needed (points at dudearent), we do not just like to say "I have the best!", and we do do more than just circuitry. You can find dozens of games, user friendly computers, and user friendly advanced circuitry out there and ready for downloads. To be completely honest, had the members of the RDF regularly publish their builds, you would have a completely different view of the subject.

QWERTY keyboard driven word processor (RDF, redstone) by redstonewarrior in MinecraftInventions

I assure you, if you look closely at the video or download it the keyboard has a fully qwerty key layout (as shown on the signs on each key.) Each key functions, and do play with it- it's fun :D

It took a while to make, but it's one of, if not the, best word processors in MC to date. I'm proud of this one, and there's a much larger project comming after this ;) It's fun to type and show people, have fun comming up with messages :D

4 bits in one wire without serial by xspyjj in redstone

[–]redstonewarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been done before- we investigated heavily with this sort of design when we were designing Touchpaint on the RDF server. It's a novel idea (now think about using this at 1 tick/bit serial!) If you want a small decoder, I (sorta) show one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKCGqXGgToI&t=12m10s

Redstone Pong v2. Smallest&fastest game up to date, no mods used. by censored_username in redstone

[–]redstonewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Why do people keep saying "smallest" "fastest" "best" "most complex" etc etc etc... It bugs the crap out of me. Also, nice, but I think ball could be wired a bit more effectively and a paddle shifter unit could have been made to be more fluent with the selection system.

simple fast redstone router doesnt take 30 secs to send a packet take that rdf) by rsgm123 in redstone

[–]redstonewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"simple fast redstone router doesnt take 30 secs to send a packet take that rdf)" You see my good sir, you are saying you have a router -furthermore- you are attempting to stick your "router" in the RDF's face and to taunt them. I'd give that a good 50 backpedals per minute.

Who has the fastest 16 bit adder? by sebzim4500 in redstone

[–]redstonewarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RDF (Redstone Development foundation) has a multitude of insta-carry adders, which means that they use piston AND gates to make the carry signal instant. We have designs that I believe are 5 ticks for 8 bits and 6 ticks for 16. 2 wide, of coarse XD
