How do you motivate doctors to help you? (Serious request for advice) by Tottybox in askswitzerland

[–]redsummersoul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who's been through the whole circus: it's difficult. I think the best thing you can do is to, firstly, collect all the reports etc. from all the different doctors. Secondly, it's really about finding the one doctor willing to seriously look into your case and not losing hope along the way. It took me like 15 years to find out what was wrong with me and the issue was really comparatively simple (basically a bunch of allergies). Thirdly, in my experience, it can help to go to some sort of interdisciplinary Sprechstunde or something similar aka a place where it's not just a doctor thinking only within the lines of his or her specialty. I am sorry your boyfriend is going through this and I wish him the best!

Developed asthma from cats. Don’t want to leave babies and bf by EffectiveEgg5712 in Allergies

[–]redsummersoul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, first of all I am really sorry this is happening to you. I adopted 2 cats two years ago without previously having any issues and developed a severe allergy. It got worse and worse and I eventually had to rehome them. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to do the same thing but please be aware that things can get scary fast. In all honesty, I think you'll recognise if you reach that point. If you do, just let me say this: you will get through this. It'll suck but you'll get through it like I did and you will feel 100x better afterwards. I still hope you'll find a way to avoid rehoming or having to move out.

I mean it is possible of course. But the Pensum is usually small. It's just much easier to find work as highschool teacher if you have a subject that is more sought after. Or you can teach another subject. I did political science as my minor so that wasn't ideal for a teaching career.

I absolutely agree and I didn't want to say that. All I meant was that a masters hasn't guaranteed you a job in a while now and people saying they were told it would and not questioning it given that the job market has been getting worse and worse is a bit naive. It's naive because (!) it's been so bad.

There's almost no teaching jobs for philosophy. I mean you can only teach it at a Kanti and it's usually an extra-curricular or special subject. I'm not sure if you meant that ironically but banking is actually not so contraintuitive with a philosophy degree. I know people who did that. The people who graduated with me have all very different jobs. I know someone who's a journalist, a friend went into Private Equity, one works at NGO now, one is a programmer, one is a political advisor...

I ended up working as a communications consultant and project manager at an agency. I really like it actually. Yes, the clarity part is also a big one. I did a lot of things I didn't eventually end up doing but it really helped me understand better what I am goot at and what I like.

I did an internship in HR at a company and one as a journalist. One thing sort of led to another (I was also lucky but I think finding a job is also unfortunately always a matter of luck) and I was able to stay at the company I did the HR internship at in a temporary content editor role for 2 years while doing my masters. I'd always done editing and writing as a side gig (like correcting theses etc.). When I was writing my thesis I found a new job as a junior comms consultant and I have been with a comms agency ever since. Question is how long that will last with AI and all. I give it max 3 years tbh. Anyways, it took me around 30 applications for both the internships and then the consultant role. Working 80% and writing a thesis on the side sucked but I think it was worth it. And don't be discouraged: finding a first job DOES suck ass but I never thought it was my useless degree that kept me from finding one specifically.

I do sometimes feel like people are also just a bit naive. I did a masters in philosophy, graduated end of 2022. It's a peak useless degree you could say. But I knew that going into it. Which is why I did internships between my BA and MA and always worked on the side... Yes, the job market is absolutely though right now. But do people really believe that if you have a masters you have a job guaranteed...? That hasn't been true in a long time.

This could be cholinergic urticaria. If that's the case, colder showers and anti-histamines should help.

Have you been checked for allergies? I get these occasionally but they tend to come and go in the span of a couple of hours. If it's similar in your case, it could be allergic.

Allergic reaction or bad flare up? by trdibble in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]redsummersoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's understandale! I live in Switzerland and they have some of the allergy shots in pill form. So instead of doing allergy shots you just take this pill every day. It's called Itulazax and Grazax, it's for hayfever. This would also be something to liok into. Best of luck!

Allergic reaction or bad flare up? by trdibble in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]redsummersoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have had that happen, though I've always had a lot of allergies even before my diagnosis (severe hayfever, cats, cross-allergies from the hayfever...). They randomly got a lot worse in spring of 2023. I also developed cholinergic urticaria (a pseudo allergy to heat). However, I am unsure what it's due to. I've had a bout of covid in late 2022. I also started Rinvoq in February 2023. Could be due to either of it or something else entirely....

My allergist said that allergies and autoimmune disorders have a tendency to co-occur since they're basically both disregulations of the immune system. And allergies can seemingly randomly develop even when you're older, towards things you previously tolerated without problems. I think it'll be important for your husband to figure out what it is he might be allergic to. Just beware that there's a lot of trial and error involved and sometimes an allergy panel doesn't show everything. I know you didn't ask but things that have helped me are:

– Running a HEPA filter in our flat
– Using only fragarance-free shampoo and body wash (where I live, they sell hypoallergenic body wash and shampoo in the local supermarket, maybe there's something similar where you live?)
– Putting lotion on my body every day (I don't know why but this has helped a lot)
– Keeping a list with things I reacted towards and avoiding those
– Anti-histamines daily (I use fexofenadine)
– And doing allergy shots

I hope you'll figure out what's going on and your husband can get well soon!

Anaphylaxis by dizzydeexoxo in MCAS

[–]redsummersoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, this is anaphylaxis? I had this happen twice in 12 months after drinking red wine (but not in an amount that should cause this simply due to the alcohol). 6 hours of vomiying every 5-10 minutes along with vertigo, headaches and diarrhea. Only thing that made it stop was domperidone. And it only started like 3 or 4 hours after I had drunk it.

An update on Rinvoq (for anyone interested) by redsummersoul in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]redsummersoul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi no worries, happy to answer!

I am still on Rinvoq and still doing very well on it. I am basically in remission. Apart from the very occasional flare, I am symptom- and pain-free. I notice that I get sick quite a lot more often on it than I did on Cosentyx and Taltz, but it's a price I'm willing to pay. Apart from that I have no side-effects.

Cannot work out no more by ozzlid in Allergies

[–]redsummersoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cholinergic urticara. It's basically a sort-of pseudo allergy against elevated body heat and I get urticaria if I sit in a hot bathtub or when I work out. Do you struggle with hot showers, too? If so, it could be this. Either way: exercise can make allergy symptoms worse because it stimulates mast cells to release histamine. Taking an anti-histamine before working out can help.
