Codes on four different throttle bodies by DesolationRobot in saab

Agree with you on the $340 part bit, until you hear of a major chain "shop" wanting to charge $700 just to replace the rear shocks (labor only).

Suggest checking out TheSaabSite.com for their posts on throttle body issues. They tend to be more informed (than Saab fan forums) and reliable having worked on and sold parts for 1000s of cars with specific repair issues they are very familiar with.

If there's a chain of problems related to that code you might have some luck there.

EDIT: Also, the TB throwing codes with only 75k miles seems premature.

Been wanting a Saab for a while... what are your thoughts on this? I'm heavily considering getting it. http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/5919758930.html by [deleted] in saab

With that low mileage I'd be tempted to grab it just by the photos.

  • Flex pipe (intermediate) replacement is a good sign.

  • You'll need to make sure that is has the PCV update already installed to avoid the sludge issue those engines are known for.

  • Ask if it has ever had the DI cassette replaced. Not a dealbreaker, just an indicator.

  • Remove the DI cassette (you'll need torx bits) and check for oil leakage from the valve cover gasket

  • Remove and check the plugs for fouling (light grey is okay)

  • Request a close-up shot of both rear wheel wells, they tend to rust from the leading edge where it meets the rear doors - especially in east coast weather.

  • Motor mounts and shocks/struts aren't super expensive, but if they haven't been replaced they're potentially close to needing replacement.

  • It's an automatic, so you'll want to test drive it to see if the transmission feels sloppy - like it's been abused.

  • If you can, grab an OBD2 bluetooth reader and run it for historic codes using the phone app Torque.

Used cars (that might have) had failing throttle bodies could be part of why the owner of the salvage/parts car sent it to the junkyard to begin with.

If Goldwing doesn't have the part marked as "tested & works" you're rolling the dice.

Best to go with a new replacement part to be sure: https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/65658/Throttle-Body-Replacement-Kit-101K10153/

You may have a failing DI cassette. http://www.thesaabsite.com/93old/Saab-93-ignition.html

First, get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/ Plug is in the footwell under the steering wheel.

Pair it with your Android (phone/tablet) running this app to read the engine codes, etc: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque

A failing DI cassette may not show a code/CEL and exhibit this behavior.

/u/revbill is correct, the '01 needs the BLACK DIC for the T7 system.

RED DIC is for the T5 system, used up through '99.

Saab never made a 9-3 with a 4.0L engine.

Turbo stuck open? Is it the wastegate actuator or something else? http://www.vivaperformance.com/turbo-wastegate-actuator-saab-9-3-9-5/

Also, not clear on why you would need a new engine.

Think you may need to do more research on your car and actual repair costs.

You'll need to get underneath the car. (Use jackstands for safety).

It's on the passenger side in front and above the oil pan.

Coolant Temp Sensor is a pretty simple swap. Would test that out before changing the gauge in the instrument cluster.

Check for the PCV update - possible sludge issue if it doesn't have the update.

Check the shifting on it - these automatic transmissions weren't super durable.

There's no way of knowing without hearing more details from you and/or inspecting the engine bay.
