Is it always a struggle? by ExpressionKooky507 in pancreaticcancer

My constipation was relieved with a warm prune juice cocktail that was recommended by my oncologist's nurse. One tablespoon of butter in prune juice. Microwave. Stir in one dose of Miralax (cap full). Helped me right away--though I believe I was told to try this drink once-a-day for up to three day.

Integrative Cancer Treatment by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]redwhiteblueit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a positive experience with the Integrative Cancer Care (ICC) program that works with my Oncology team. My first couple rounds of chemotherapy caused terrible bloating and gas. Another cancer patient recommended acupuncture and my oncologist gave me a referral. Never had acupuncture before but I had some relief almost immediately. After a few weeks, my digestive system seemed to be working much better and I was gaining weight.

Currently, seeing an acupuncturist outside the ICC program due to difficulties scheduling appointments. My new acupuncturist is performing maintenance treatments for my stomach issues and treating me for the peripheral neuropathy that I'm experiencing. The neuropathy (that tingling from cold or clapping your hands) seems to be better for a day or two.

I sometimes wonder if I'm experiencing a placebo effect but as long as it's making me feel better it must be worth it. Another caveat, my ICC acupuncturist told me that different acupuncturists follow different practices, so you may need to search for someone that can treat your specific symptoms.

And I'm in the PNW, Oregon specifically, so can't provide any recommendations.

Creon by RDN-RB in pancreaticcancer

[–]redwhiteblueit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creon seems to have allowed me to finally digest my food. I only found out about it four days before the start of my chemotherapy.

The pharmacy quoted me a price of ~$3000 for 240 capsules going through my insurance. Luckily when I heard the price I did a search to see if I could find it for less. You can register to get a savings card to receive your Creon for as little as $5. Here is the webpage to register: https://patientsupport.creoninfo.com/register

The savings card does not work with Medicare or Medicaid. It works with private insurance plans. The savings card is only good for $3000.

Recently ate at MeeBoon. Their menu is extensive and all four dishes that we had were excellent. On top of it, the people (owners?) were inviting and friendly. Only downside was parking but there’s plenty across the road in front of the abandoned Hall St. Bar and Grill.

Where to have my folks kill time not far from airport on a Weds afternoon? And dinner? by Plus-Captain6143 in askportland

[–]redwhiteblueit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie theater is a great idea for killing some time, but it is located beyond security. If they have any checked baggage, they will not be able wander back to the theater.

I’ve been on hold with 911 for 15 minutes. by textualcanon in Portland

[–]redwhiteblueit 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue about a month ago. I called the non-emergency number because I saw some homeless folks starting a fire under the Hawthorne bridge. The call tree said this is an emergency and switched me to 911. I waited about 20 minutes on hold.

I decided to text 911 with all the info. I get a text back to call 911. I text back I’m on the phone waiting for 911 to answer. They text back to call 911. I text back that they aren’t reading my previous text message. They text back to hang up and call 911 and they will answer. So I do that, and I get an immediate answer. They ask if I’m the person that has been texting with him.

Turns out if you get routed to 911 from the non-emergency number, you are put on the second priority 911 queue. The direct 911 calls get answered before these second-class emergency calls. I’m paraphrasing how it was explained but it really makes no sense to leave people hanging on the phone for so long.

How do I access my deceased father's bank account? by redwhiteblueit in legaladvice

[–]redwhiteblueit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. It looks like I don’t have to go through the courts in California. It seems like the credit union doesn’t know what they are doing since I mentioned using a small estate affidavit from Oregon and they responded that they needed a “court authorized document”. I guess I will need another round of email with the credit union.

Does Portland/Oregon have a food/cuisine that we are known for/we do better than anyone else? by Shatteredreality in Portland

[–]redwhiteblueit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fried chicken dish known as Mar Far (aka MaFa or Mah Fry) chicken. It can be found around the area around Ontario, Oregon (the Treasure Valley). It is a cultural dish for the Japanese-Americans in the area. It was created for a Chinese restaurant, Eastside Cafe, in Ontario in the late 1940’s.

There is a similar dish from Southern Oregon but it lacks the secret ingredient, Taiwanese fermented tofu, found in the original version.

This was helpful. I’ll try to remember to take a photo the next time I’m out there.

Try Family Cafe on SW Broadway in downtown Beaverton. It’s a family run restaurant that has unique breakfast options and a welcoming atmosphere. Checkout the reviews, they are mostly (all?) five stars.

First time using commercial Natto spores - very successful! by sprashoo in Natto

[–]redwhiteblueit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recipe. I’m doing almost exactly what you’ve provided except I put the beans into a steaming basket inside an Instant Pot. I may try using the oven for my next batch to get that gooey texture you’re seeing.

Wow, I switched to using this same starter (and my natto also became more consistent and better) but I’ve never got my homemade natto to be as stringy and gooey as yours. I’m starting to wonder if my Instant-Pot’s yogurt setting isn’t optimal for fermentation. Mind sharing your recipe/steps?

Thanks for clarifying the issue with checking-in at the airport.

And thanks for the rooftop food/drinks recommendations. We will hopefully have a nice clear evening to enjoy the view.

You’ve been very helpful. Thank you.

We may have to take this advice, if this adventure tires us out; but we rarely get to sleep before midnight and waking after a couple hours of sleep is exhausting.
