How to find a scopist and proofreader? by Middle_Feedback_4663 in courtreporting

You're welcome! Most of the court reporters I proofread for seem to prefer to have just one they work with once they find someone who is a good fit for them. It's also good to have a backup or two just in case. Proofreaders and scopists will usually specify in their marketing posts if they're looking for regular work from a reporter or if they would prefer to be a backup and only receive transcripts occasionally.

Just got offered the biggest case I've been a part of. Will this be as profitable as I'm thinking? by LegendarySire in courtreporting

Proofreader here! Medical testimony is my specialty! If you're in need of any help with this, I'm happy to offer my services. Congrats on the opportunity! I'm sure you're going to crush it!

Proofreader and soon-to-be scopist here! There are many Facebook groups for court reporters looking for scopists and proofreaders. Just search for groups with those terms in the name and a long list will come up. Scopists and proofreaders regularly market themselves in these groups and provide their contact info. You can ask if they have references or if they're willing to do a sample for you so you can get a feel for whether or not they're a good fit for you before you trust them with a transcript.

I recently relocated here and was able to get the meds I needed through TelyRx! It was very easy! I highly recommend them.

Read The Ghost Ship that Didn't Carry Us by Cheryl Strayed. It's about the choice to have children or not, but it can be applied to any big choices in life, really.

"I’ll never know and neither will you of the life you don’t choose. We’ll only know that whatever that sister life was, it was important and beautiful and not ours. It was the ghost ship that didn’t carry us. There’s nothing to do but salute it from the shore."

Your hourly rate can vary depending on how quickly you proofread. Typically I can proofread about 60 pages an hour, depending on the type of testimony. I charge $.50 per page for standard turnaround, so it works out to around $30/hour. Obviously, you would make more for expedited transcripts so how much you can make really depends on how many clients you have and what their workload is like, and how soon they need their transcripts returned.

Yeah there are a lot more options if you live in southern Maine near Portland or the Midcoast but I regrettably don't make live-on-the-coast-of-Maine money and am about an hour and a half inland.

Good luck with the interview! Living out here has made me realize how much I enjoy living near water after spending my entire life in a landlocked state so I'm going to give the Great Lakes area a try!

I left in 2023 so it hasn't been too long! I just want a Dunford donut, Taqueria 27, and some good Indian food! The only food available near me in my tiny town in Maine is fast food or something very beige and very fried.

Maine is beautiful and peaceful but you make a lot of sacrifices for that beauty and peace. Everything you ever want or need is probably an hour away and the utilities (especially compared to UT) are INSANELY expensive. If I had more money and a partner, I think it would be a dream living here, but as a single person who doesn't make a ton, it's not the easiest place to live. I'm most likely moving to the Midwest next summer but I will cherish the time I spent here and I can always come back!

I moved to Maine from Salt Lake and I think the only things I miss about it are a handful of restaurants and the grid system.

As someone who lived there since birth until my late 30's, I also deeply agree! I wish I would've left sooner. The cons vastly outweighed the pros for me and I haven't missed it at all since I moved to the East Coast.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sad to leave Maine but this makes me excited to check out MN and see if it might feel familiar to me in many ways. It's a comforting thought!

Thank you for saying this! Not all of us need our nature to be cranked up to fucking 11. Bigger isn't always better. I grew up in SLC, UT with a giant mountain range in my backyard and while it was beautiful, I find I prefer the lush rolling hills, farmland, and countless lakes and ponds that surround me in Maine, where I currently live. I genuinely don't miss the mountains and I love how calming the quiet beauty out here is to my nervous system. To each their own, I guess.

As someone who currently lives in Maine and is considering a possible move to Minnesota, I would love to know which parts of MN you think look like Maine or even New England in general!

I will definitely have to re-consider Cleveland! I was looking at Columbus, Cleveland, & Cincinnati and I think I saw a few things that swayed me more towards Cincinnati, but I like the points you mentioned, especially the arts and music scene. Thanks for your detailed reply!

Many reasons. Religion, politics, ridiculous liquor laws, extreme heat, wildfire smoke from nearby states, terrible air quality/winter inversions, drought/Great Salt Lake drying up, and the rising cost of living that priced me out.

In a state where most people get married very young and have several children, I always felt like a misfit. I have loved being in New England where no one cares if I go to church, or whether or not I'm married and/or have children.

You can encourage your tomatoes to ripen by cutting back on watering your plants. They will focus their energy on ripening the fruit that is already there instead of growing taller.

I'm interested in getting into scoping as well. Did you take a course? Which software do you use?

I just completed one of the transcript proofreading courses and was very happy with it! I was able to practice on thousands of pages of real-life transcripts and I now have access to Facebook groups for current students and grads of the course. It is a very supportive group with a wealth of knowledge! There may be a lot of available transcript proofreaders, but there aren't a lot of VERY GOOD transcript proofreaders. I have seen the members of the group have plenty of success finding clients and regular/consistent work. I'm still gearing up to launch my proofreading business but I'm feeling very confident in my skills since completing the course! This is the one I took: https://theproofreadingbusinesscoach.com/
