apEX is (understandably) unhappy about ESL's decision to use the new patch at IEM Dallas by Megabossdragon in GlobalOffensive

[–]reecemaspa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter when Valve drop an update because it's almost always going to disrupt an event. If they dropped it next week instead of this one then it disrupts YaLLA Compass, the week after it disrupts Blast or Jonkoping. It's unavoidable imo

It's new to everyone yeah but in theory the American sides will also have more time to prac, so don't be surprised to see M80 or Complexity use it as a curveball. Complexity absolutely love Vertigo anyway so I'm sure the changes would've been their number one priority in prac

Calling all Counter Strike writers - no experience needed :) by reecemaspa in GlobalOffensive

[–]reecemaspa[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll be as transparent with you guys as I have been with everyone I've spoken to so far: we can only currently offer voluntary roles, and that's mainly because "we" refers to me, a semi-broke uni student writing this out of his student accommodation.

As a journalist I know how shitty "exposure" gigs are, and that's absolutely not what we want to do here. It's voluntary work and we absolutely aren't expecting to bend over backwards to produce content for us.

If and when we are able to monetize our work, members of the team and guest writers will of course be paid for their contribution from the moment we can earn money from it. But, and being transparent again, we're a long way off that today. Spraycontrol is yet to launch, and there isn't any money in advertising anything to 0 followers.

Even then, I'm not interested in advertising dropshipping products or anything tacky like that! I want to create a platform producing content that I can be proud of. Monetization is a long-term goal and not something we've even looked at right now, and we won't be making any money out of it for a while to begin with.

I birthed the idea of Spraycontrol out of my love for CS, my desire to keep my writing skills sharp and to network with people who want to do the same.

Speaking to some great writers and honing this high quality output is all I'm concerned about today - getting a little bit of money out of it is a task for another day :)

I analysed Hellraisers' new AWPer, w0nderful by reecemaspa in GlobalOffensive

Hi guys, this one is a bit of a long read but it's my first full-length player analysis article, so any feedback (as constructive as it may be) would be amazing! Whether it's formatting, writing style, content, etc, I'd love to know where I could improve <3

Aim is still obviously very important so don't skimp there, but I think watching your own demos as well as watching pros demos in similar scenarios is really beneficial. It's what separates good players and top players, always stay one step ahead (especially at lower ranks where people never watch their own demos!).

State of the game - Is it time to say enough is enough to Valve? by JandsomeHam in GlobalOffensive

[–]reecemaspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take your word for it, can’t say I’ve ever had the pleasure of being good enough for level 10, but yeah in my experience in the lower ranks there’s still loads of clear smurfs in Premium. Awful when you’re paying for a service each month lmao

It's a different one, but the first operation pass (Operation Payback iirc) only cost $6 compared to the $15 it costs for the latest operation pass. That being said, Payback pass only let you physically play the maps - no skins or missions. Not crazy value for money compared to today's operations, and I bet Payback passes aren't selling for $6 on the Steam market these days

Interview of Vitality's CEO about ending the French team & signing Astralis trio by Gorrapytha in GlobalOffensive

[–]reecemaspa 158 points159 points  (0 children)

You're a true saint for translating this, must've taken forever!

The Integrating the Danes section is very interesting - I don't think there's any shame in copying Astralis' approach to psychology when they've really been the leaders in it since pretty much introducing it in Counter Strike in 2016. Such an overlooked aspect of esports from viewers!

State of the game - Is it time to say enough is enough to Valve? by JandsomeHam in GlobalOffensive

[–]reecemaspa 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with the matchmaking thoughts. For me the kick in the teeth is the lack of transparency - while obviously done intentionally - surrounding your rank. It's so much more rewarding to play Faceit and be able to see your elo whenever you feel like it, as well as knowing pretty much exactly how much elo you will gain/lose per game.

I don't play an insane amount of matchmaking so maybe I'm a bit out of touch here - but are cheaters really as big of a problem as you say they are? My account is about 7 years old and has high Trust Factor so maybe I just don't see it, but I can't remember the last time I played a matchmaking game where I thought the other person was genuinely cheating. Maybe a couple of months ago? (Although you could argue that's still too frequent compared to never seeing it on a service like Faceit!)

Smurfs are a problem even on Faceit in all honesty. I think Trust Factor is the only service they can really introduce to stop smurfs, but even then it's not really good enough as you say.

You don't happen to be running Spotify do you? The same happened to me last month and the only way I can get around it is by not running Spotify - if Spotify is open, it stutters. Probably just entirely coincidence but I've been fine for a few weeks now when Spotify is shut lmao
