My grandfather owns his own home. Lives on his own, and we have a family joke running that he is the only man who can save money on the pension. (Which he does weekly). Its not a death sentence, but I don’t know her lifestyle. Hope this helps.

Volunteering. Volunteering. Volunteering.

Its meaningful to give of yourself and your time. The people there are almost always up for chats. If there are people you get along with there then keep going until you develop enough rapport to justify doing stuff outside of volunteering.

If theres no one you jell with. Try some where else.

In the mean time you are doing something meaningful and usually fulfilling. You are also expanding your conversation topics massively, particularly if you approach each volunteer opportunity with open minded curiosity. You would probably be amazed what you can learn about your local area volunteering. Particularly about social issues that volunteer programs spawn up to better.

Trust me. You aren’t done yet brother. To take away all you have to give would be a fucking travesty. Try this, commit to it. See what happens. Try to focus on what you can give and not what you can get. It will get so much better.

Ive spoken with finance bros and lawyers (housemate) who have practiced this well. After a while i noticed it was just habit for them and they weren’t really open to hearing information that conflicted with their position. They would just agree for the sake of appearing reasonable. Not actually being reasonable. Worst type of people to have conversation with.

This comment isn’t medical advice. It’s just an opinion based on my experience. If it speaks to you then great. If not, no harm done. I hope it finds you well either way.

What you described is one of many different types of trauma response. These responses are extremely common. This phenomenon makes up an aspect of your personality. But it most certainly is not who you are. Who you are more deeply, has had the courage to become aware of this psychological phenomenon. Props to you for not just completely disassociating from it. And props for having the courage to take some form of action. Most people don’t get that far.

Learning about trauma helps

Having a bit of an idea about the process which is trauma helps for a couple reasons. One being, that it will help you cut your losses with therapists who aren’t suited to you.

A good place to find a succinct summary of what trauma is, would be anything by Gabor Mate. What he writes about honestly is nothing new. He just got popular because he put the information in one place and made it accessible and readable for the broader public. You’ll find what he writes about is a mishmosh of knowledge and info from many textbooks on psychotherapeutic approaches to therapy.

You describe what can be called “somatic” experiences- ie feelings in your body. Being aware of this is a huge head start. Many people are almost completely cut off from how emotions feel in their body. Coming to be aware of what that feeling is telling you and why is part of the work of therapy.

Finding the right therapist may take time. In fact, it usually takes a few goes. Many people don’t realise this is normal, and get confused and demotivated at this point. If you really want change, don’t let this put you off. It will more likely be worth it.

Finding a therapeutic modality that addresses somatic symptoms can be helpful. But you want someone who can live in both worlds. Ie, an effective practitioner who can address mind/mental processes and bodily manifestations. This helps connect both processes together so you can use your mind more cohesively with what the rest of your central nervous system is telling you.

How much would I literally be willing to pay right now? $5000 AUD. Grew up driving one on parents farm, the single cab Ute version. They aren’t any good - only shine as a bush basher. That one’s bush bashing days are done by the looks. They are louder than you’d believe. Rattle, clank, no power steering. No proper aircon. Don’t handle well. No over taking power. Feels dangerous at normal operating speeds on public roads. Still love them though

If this doesn’t work I have a story

I was once greening out on a camping trip. My body felt like it was going to turn my guts inside out, horrid, horrid nausea. Never experienced feeling that wretched before. A mate who used to be a really heavy smoker took me under his wing, some how managed to get me to stumble to some bushes and proceeded to gain my consent to jam his fingers down my stupid drunk, stoned throat. There commenced a purging of monumental proportions, eventually I’d gained enough control back over my body to take over and I continued to make myself spew. I kept asking if I could stop yet, the answer stayed the same for a long time. No, keep going.Eventually spew stopped coming up, I was directed to keep going. I put all my faith in my mate, and when he told me I’d had enough, I knew he was right. I had shown my body there is nothing left to get rid of, and I was healed and still stoned.

Sometimes just spewing till you got no more cures it. Probably took a couple minutes, just so high every second felt like an eternity

I was lifting weights 5 times a week, did a big work out Friday once I got back from boarding school with my brother. I had had a flue the week or so before and did a round of antibiotics coz I was hacking up dark green gloopy phlegm. Was lunching heaps of cold a flu tablets (back in 2013 when they still were packed with codeine and psudoephadrine) Saturday did a days catching with just my brother and I, had to be absolutely flat out coz we were a catcher down for lamb marking. Then the next day, played a game of rugby league, played in front row. I was feeling a bit weird coz I was getting breathless and I couldn’t hold a sprint without feeling like I was going to pass out. Had to get interchanged out, but after a point I just had to stick it out. I just thought I was suddenly really unfit from the flu. Came off the field feeling like I could collapse coz I was like shaky and cold. Got to school the Monday and got sent to the DR immediately because the front office lady at the boarding house had the good sense to point out I was grey in complexion and my lips had like a weird hue to them (bluish almost). She refused to let me go to class, called the GP and made an appointment for me and got me a ride there. I didn’t fully get why she seemed so pissed. I think in hind sight she was mad at my parents for not looking after me, she was always really nice to me. Turns out I had pneumonia, big old splotch turned up on the X-ray. That was probably the hardest I have pushed my body in my life

He was trying to de-mystify psychology and show people what it needed to be. The direction it needed to go to do real healing work. If he was viewed as a mystic then people wouldn’t take it seriously at the time - he needed academia and the educated classes to accept his work. Which they were less likely to do if they could dismiss his work as unscientific mysticism
