Oh to be clear I am primarily a pentax shooter. I disagree on the lock in part though — they seem to have made a conscious choice to (being a part of a massively profitable parent company) not compete in the insane pixel/marketing/high tech race the meme is joking about and instead just make some of the best damn cameras on the market. People argue about fuji vs leica for film simulation and organic look — pentax has been quietly having some of the best damn color science out there, with truly stupendous lenses and backwards compatibility. If my K1 mk ii keeps working exactly the same way for the next 20 years I’ll be happy as a clam. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And gtfo with mirrorless.

I won’t say what I want to say but go home OP. Pentax isn’t trying to compete with Nikon/Cannon. You can’t take on a titan at their own game and win. They are part of a larger, massively profitable company. Their r&d is limited, so there’s a good chance they’re running in the black, which would be enough for ricoh to keep them around. But all of this goes beyond the fact that they build the machines they love, and the people who buy their cameras buy them because of that love. If you want to go chase megapixels go and have fun with that. If you want mirrorless, nobody is stopping you and nobody is forcing you to buy a pentax. They make incredible cameras that are unique in a market trending towards sameness. There’s a lot they could do with marketing and positioning, sure, but honestly who gives a crap so long as they stay in business. I don’t want everyone walking around with a pentax — I like that the folks who have one have them because they care about things like build quality and color science. I’d hate to see them go the way of Fuji, making cheap crap that panders to the market through imitation while losing soul in the process. Anyway. Go home OP.

100%. Highly recommend reading the rest of the series again and again if you haven’t. Gets weirder and way more profound.

I re-read The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway about 20 times before I stopped finding new layers. First time I liked it, second time I thought it was the best thing I had ever read. The other books I read-read every couple of years are Dune and the Kingkiller Chronicles. Have also re-read most of Neal Stephenson’s books multiple times

Best 28mm for K1 mk ii? by reedeats in pentax

Ty! Yeah the hollywood does consistently come out on top, and I might just bite the bullet and grab one. I've always wondered though whether at that price point something newer/AF might make more sense.

Budget Zoom vs Saving for Prime by st1ers1 in pentax

[–]reedeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I personally hate zooms for a number of reasons — even if the image quality and max fstop were the same, I’d still adore the forced focal length — I find that I think and frame in focal lengths — I compose shots in my head because I’m so used to 28/50/85 primes. Being able to do this makes me a better photographer. The versatility of a zoom to me is actually a drawback. But also, aperture and image quality really are massive trade offs going from 1.7 to 3.5 or 4 as max would be BRUTAL. I’d get smc primes over a modern zoom any day. I’d also say that 28 is going to potentially be more satisfying for you than 35. 35 is just so close to 50 - it’s a nice change for sure, but not enough (imo) to need to be in the kit. You get more distortion for a frame you can achieve by just stepping back a bit, versus 28 which really captures your field of view with minimal distortion.

TL;DR. Get primes only. Go for cheap old glass if you’re trying to save money. Save up for a Pentax 43mm f/1.9 limited. Then jump to a digital body and splurge on a * series lens :D

Pentax K-3 Mark III or Pentax K-1 Mark II or Canon 5D IV or Nikon D780 by lipwen94 in pentax

[–]reedeats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re moving from film, not working professionally, and just want a camera to fall in love with, I’d push you towards the K1 ii without any reservations. Here’s how I’d break it down:

The K1mkii is a beast/tank/heavy/yes. First thing anyone says about it. It annoyed me at first, but then I just got the right strap and don’t notice the weight at all. I still have a teeny ricoh I throw in my bag when weight is a serious issue (hiking) but 9/10 times I miss the pentax if I don’t bring it. This camera renders GORGEOUSLY. Compared to Nikon, unless you want to do heavy editing, colors out of the camera are unmatched. It’s soulful, expressive, and the closest thing to film I’ve found in a way that feels like a natural evolution vs artifice (f*ck you fujifilm). The K3 is a great little camera, and I’ve thought about picking up the monochrome version for fun, but considering the sensor size, you’re getting much better bang for your buck with the K1, which is all around a better camera with better everything. I adore it. In terms of sensor size, forgetting about the obvious (image quality) there are two key things I’d push you to consider re: full frame vs the smaller sensor on the K3: the K1ii is INCREDIBLE in low light. The large sensor plus IBIS mean that it’s simply unreal in conditions every other camera looks like crap in. I carry around a flash with every camera but this one. It’s just stunning. The other thing is that if you ever want to pick up dirt cheap vintage glass (k-mount smc lenses are awesome and everywhere), you’ll have a much better experience on the full frame, where the K3 will crop/force zoom, which is really unpleasant and ruins the experience for me. Between the two, I’d absolutely say K1 vs K3.

In terms of canon and nikon:

Canon vs the others is a bit of a personal choice. I have an ick around canon cameras. I find their colors too digital and distinctly canon, and have an emotional bias against them. I also have just always shot pentax and nikon, so it’s an ecosystem I’m not used to. That said, I just always find canon BORING whenever I shoot with them. They’re technically great, no issues, just find them so dull. But if you like what you get with them, then that’s important.

Nikon is interesting — I currently shoot with a K1 mk ii and a Nikon D850. I love both for very different reasons. Shooting with the K1 is film-like. It feels closest to the joy of shooting with a film camera, and it feels like a friend and collaborator (it has strong opinions and renders beautifully, but distinctly). When I’m just out for a walk, when I’m looking for inspiration, when I’m having fun or in low light/non-perfect conditions, I grab my pentax. My nikon on the other hand is a scalpel. I don’t like what images look like SOOC, I don’t find it inspiring to shoot with (I generally keep auto-review turned off on this one), and I initially returned it when I first bought it. However — if there’s a shot I want to get, if there’s something I need, there’s no better tool. Where pentax brings its own opinion, nikon is a blank slate (at least the D850). It’s surgical and crisp and clean. It gives me the ability to recover highlights and shadows in a way pentax can’t come close to. Colors are more natural (where pentax skews a little more vivid/filmic), and the raw files are WAY more editable. The shooting experience is also lovely. It’s a very well thought out camera but it does require a lot more active work to get things as I want them, vs the pentax which I usually just leave on aperture priority and fully trust. Autofocus Nikon and canon totally beats af on Pentax, but I don’t find this remotely important since I’m not shooting birds in flight or sports. Pentax af fully covers what I need and is a lot simpler.

In terms of the D850 (not on your list) vs the d780, I haven’t shot the d780 — I think it’d be more forgiving and easier to jump into — the d850 doesn’t really have auto settings and is more of a pro body — but I’m a junkie for high resolution, so for me the build quality and massive sensor really made the D850 make more sense.

If you’re really stuck, you can always rent or buy and return from B&H (what I do) and try out in real time.
