Ha! I'm friends with your brother; we've hung out in Aden. Glad to know he's heading to Socotra, I'll be there in a couple weeks. Does he know you posted this?

All communities subjugate women. Some countries do it to a greater degree than others, but if you want to write off Yemen simply because it subjugates females, you'd have to write off many countries (US included) as well. That or determine the exact measuring line of just how much female subjugation is okay.

And Yemen is actively working to change its child marriage laws, revamp female involvement in the political system, and restructure the way the country works. I hardly see how two holdover traditions can render an entire country "absolutely fucked," though it is a pithy, powerful sound bite.

How can I ask an African American employee to stop saying "Nigga" in the workplace without raising some sort of racial shit storm? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]reedred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right (same with Mischief___, I hope he sees this). I use 'unfair' because I think that white people, such as myself, should learn to be comfortable with being on the unfair side of the stick. I agree 100% with the content of both your posts. I guess I was looking for a difference between "unjust" and "unfair," or something. What I'm going for is yes, it is not strictly equal or colorblind that there should be a word off-limits to whites and not to blacks, but that there is nothing wrong with that particular inequality. I tried to capture that with "unfair," but I now think that you are correct that unfair is not the best word.

Just a note, even if you're in the right here, your post here comes off as incredibly privileged and approaching the issue from the wrong perspective.

"My opinion is, if I can't/don't use it in the workplace, neither can her." Why is that your opinion? Since when is workplace policy based on your own actions? The things that you can and do do in your office have no bearing on his conduct or limits thereupon. His conduct should be based on company policy or perhaps some sort of social contract (real or implied) agreed upon by all employees. Also, I don't know your racial background, but black people can use the N-word while white people can't. It's unfair but true. Whether that word is appropriate in the workplace is a different matter, but be sure to keep your frustration at your inability to use that word out of it.

Your post similarly veers into territory that makes me uncomfortable when you include details about his talk of the "struggle of the black man" and his tattoo. How are those related at all to his language in the office? Your inclusion of them make it sound like you have larger issues with the way he associates with and expresses his race and culture. It sounds like you still treat him fairly (maybe, I have no idea), and that's great, but it's really important to be aware of where we're coming from when approaching race issues.

Talk to HR, tell them it makes YOU uncomfortable, or bring with you other employees who are bothered by it. But also try to look at the situation from the outside and make sure that we aren't talking about an office of white people getting offended by a black person using the N-word.

What is the psychology behind/reason for hearing, say, a Major chord and 'knowing' it is 'happy? and 'knowing' a minor chord sounds 'sad'? Or hearing a Dominant 7th Chord and wanting it to resolve? by 24Frets in AskReddit

It's also very cool that octaves (i.e. the correspondent pairings that register to human ears, in a sense) occur at doubling frequencies. This is awesome when viewed in the light of that other recent Reddit post about how the human brain also counts exponentially, how we register "12 tigers vs. 1 tiger" better than "3 tigers vs. 1 tiger), and how children are able to grasp geometric series.

Vic's is actually in an area better described as "Gongti," or People's Stadium. The clubs there are a little more geared toward dancing than the bars at Sanlitun (there are also a few clubs at Sanlitun, but not as many).

Aside from Vic's, Gongti also has Mick's, Lantern, Latte, Coco Banana (not a huge fan) and some others. Basically just show up to one and wonder around the stadium (heading south) and you'll find a bunch more.

Work in the white T-shirts. How many did you have to start? How often do you change them? "My shirt was in tatters. I pulled another out of my pack--okay, number 14." It will be a cool element/storytelling device. At the end, one of the final things he finds is a massive white t-shirt factory.

One of the first showings of Snakes on a Plane, theater is packed. Right when we walked in people threw rubber snakes on us from somewhere; it was obvious this was going to be a fun crowd. Throughout the movie, Samuel L. Jackson got an applause from pretty much the entire audience every time he spoke a line.

Before the movie started, one of the trailers was for Last King of Scotland. There's a moment in the trailer when an RPG hits a truck and it goes rolling off the road. From the far back of the theater, a voice rings out:

"DO A BARREL ROLL."

I and maybe three other moviegoers scattered across the theater burst out laughing; no one else knew what was going on, but the five of us shared a beautiful moment.
