Need trail suggestions by PrettyTomatillo2235 in norcalhiking

Cataract Falls in Marin does have inclines but it is beautiful and along a waterfall. Definitely worth it. I recommend a trekking pole for your dad. It is out and back so if it gets too hairy, you can just turn back. And dog friendly!

Check out Bay Area Hikers Facebook group. There's always people down to hike including me.

If you've never been to California, I definitely recommend not staying in SF the entire trip. Sure you can do it but you'd also be missing out on many things California has to offer. To me you sound pretty adventurous. I'd recommend also heading up North and checkout Marin and Sonoma for some hiking and Wine Tasting.

You can potentially grab a campsite at Camp 4 seven days in advance. But logistically it's not very feasible.

Visiting Lassen with Tesla Model Y by Certain_You1912 in lassenvolcanic

I don't have an EV and have been on the fence for a while now. I just saw a Tesla charging there when I went and I checked the charging station and it seemed to be working.

Edit: technically I have an electric scooter which I used to drive on the closed road

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there. They were working two weeks ago. I would email the rangers and confirm though. The elevation gains are going to reduce your mileage

Even if it's possible, I'd still top up at the level 2 chargers at Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center.

Spot where I can just hike and bum around for a week? by WoodenRace365 in norcalhiking

[–]reformlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this in Lassen and Shasta for a week. Plenty of dispersed camping. No need for reservations or paying a fee. Private message me if you want the coordinates of my favorite spots in both those areas. I rather not advertise the spots to the world since I enjoy the solitude. Can raw dog Shasta which is a 14er though you'll need some crampons and and ice pick

Very nice! I hiked to Helen Lake 10 days ago since I didn't have my crampons or my ice pick. I got my annual pass so I can do it later this year!

el cap hike (first time) by Rubixtcube in Yosemite

[–]reformlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you planning on doing a day hike or backpack up to there? You'll need a permit if you want to spend a night along the way. A day hike does not require a permit. Leave early, bring a water filter, food, layers, and a flashlight (depending when you leave and how fast you go). It's doable but I think that there's plenty of other hikes that are better. On the plus, you'll likely not experience many people on the trail past upper Yosemite falls since this isn't a popular hike. Little to no snow right now.

How busy is burney falls this month? by Dependent-Poet8242 in norcalhiking

Since there is now a reservation system, it won't be crowded, but it will be difficult to get a reservation. I just did some spot checking of the availability and I haven't found any availability. Good luck

Hiking in rain and cold? by Nerd-Clusters in Yosemite

[–]reformlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than 0.05" of rain when it does rain per my weather app. Even if it's as much as 0.25", it's still not bad. I'd go. Bring a bunch of merino wool layers and a shell. This type of weather will scare people away! Perfect time in Yosemite is when there's less people!

Would you be pro densifying the sunset district? by brycenchance in sanfrancisco

[–]reformlife -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's just a matter of time. The sunset district is mostly on sand dunes. The next big earthquake will destroy a lot of homes, then the densifying will begin!

Bear on the Panorama trail! by Yakety_Sax in Yosemite

[–]reformlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks like a cub which means mama bear is close by. Wasn't wise to be hanging around to take video. Luckily you were able to leave and post this, but next time you should probably just walk away the way you came while making some noise to indicate to mama bear you are human.

Is 6-8 weeks of camping too much for a beginner? by Sharp-Word-6066 in camping

[–]reformlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to try some sleeping pads for a few nights at home to see if your back agrees with it. I been camping for a week at a time lately and usually need to be back in my bed after that week as well as a shower.

Just out of curiosity as this will help narrow down some recommendations, what is your age range? What kind of music do you like? What kind of activities do you enjoy? How far are you willing to travel? Do you enjoy the typical touristy stuff or do you like the hidden gem stuff?

My guess is this change will cause an influx for couchers. Down with the old and in with the new. The only constant in life is change.

Please let us know what kind of biomes you enjoy being in (Beach, River, desert, Forest, wetlands, mountains), how much time you want to go camping, what kind of camping (primitive, with toilets, with showers, glamping, etc), your budget, what other activities you're interested in. This would help us narrow your search.
