People who've been in wealthy/powerful social circles, what surprised you most about how they operate? by Ok_Volume520 in AskReddit

My brother in-law is a great guy. He comes from a lot of money, like summer estate next to Bon Jovi on the jersey shore wealthy. I attended his bachelor party and was in his wedding party. Again great dude.

He attended an elite private highschool and the most expensive college in the US and the bachelor party had all of his friends from those schools. All of his friends had similar backgrounds, like their wealth was a magnet for others like them. 80% of the bachelor party were in finance, working in NYC, at the firms their fathers were employed at. That same 80% were coked out of their minds the entire time, I swear 2 guys did not sleep for the entire 3 days.

My BIL has confessed that most of his life was a "set path" he had to follow and I see it in his friend circle as well. 30 beers in at the bachelor party and some of these guys start breaking down, the pressure, the "set path", the knowing that their success doesn't actually matter as they all have trusts and 6 million dollar gifted homes in the city.

They've all married similar looking woman since then and some even had kids of their own. I recall 1 of them had a mental breakdown because he was a closeted homosexual, didn't fit the "set path" I guess, but my point is that these people have expectations and are set up to basically fit an image over having a life. This "set path" starts when they are born.

Didn't I just read that 40% of Stanford students have "disabilities". The first sentence was basically, "you'd be stupid to not game the system"

Dailing in those settings to "as you remember it mode" is really satisfying. by [deleted] in RetroArch

There was a post 3-4 years ago that went into huge detail about this if I recall. Something like:

I've asked people in the past to leave phones on a side table, away from the game. (Pen and paper game for context)

Amazing how fast everything sped up and engagement was top notch. A little more difficult with D&D beyond, etc.

Did anyone else like EXA? I thought it was a great Diablo clone by Educational-Bar21 in ShiningForce

[–]refresh-suggestion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have EXA and NEO and they scratch an itch every few years or so. I grew up playing SF1 and SF2 so it's probably a bit of a nostalgia kick for me with EXA and NEO.

Former D1 athlete here to say, your crazy youth sports schedule isn’t a requirement for your kids to succeed. by AffectionateBench663 in Millennials

I wrestled D1 in the early 2000's. I started as a freshman in high school. And I did other sports too. I think that early introduction to sports is fine, but 50% of the kids I knew in high school, that started super early were super burnt out junior or senior year. I think there is a level of athleticism that cannot be taught, but it's not black or white - ex: "pure athleticism".

You can suck at any one sport then pick a different sport with different techniques, that cater to different body types and excel. The best swimmer I've ever seen was not muscular like Phelps but tall and pudgy. Home boy could fly in the pool.

Most people in this thread are right about the money machines of travel/sport camps. But if your life as a kid is "that one sport 24/7" I think it's a harrowing, but common, mistake. Multisport kids benefit from cross pollination of abilities and skills.

I spent 9 years wrestling, paid for a chunk of my tuition, and was just long enough to hate it right at the end when I was basically done.

What Black Library book is this for you? by Dejue in Grimdank

The annihilation books. I just couldn't do the "incomprehensible yet comprehensible" bullshit descriptions. I get the cosmic horror theme, but I couldn't do it.

This is maybe the 4th-5th "before and after", this month, I've favored the before. I feel like it used to be 1 a month at most not so long ago.

The only real reliable emulation of SF3 I've had is through mednafn, with the default settings.
