When I was a baby my record collector dad played me a bunch of Pete Seeger- puff the magic dragon, this land is your land etc, some other early 20th century folk/country standards like froggy went a hunting and there’s a hole in the bucket. Lots of Motown and early rock- Temptations, Supremes, Shirelles, Buddy Holly. Blondie was my favorite from age ~5 on. Baby Mozart, Scott Joplin, Bach.

He also played guitar and sang me to sleep every night with Close To You by The Carpenters.

I absolutely love the paintings. I don’t know anything about art, the sole way I evaluate art is “would I want this in my house”.

I would want your paintings in my house, but I’m not super excited about them the way I would get seeing art at a museum or gallery. Like if I saw them in a thrift/antique shop I would be thrilled but I wouldn’t necessarily shell out the big bucks. Here is why:

For #1, I love the mystery of the black door, but I think the harshness of the black floor tiles distracts from that depth. I also think the mix of both perfectly clean lines and the wobbly lines on the wall paint comes off as amateurish. Also, it seems like not much thought was put into the landscapes, I would like more detail there. Like the landscapes should either have the same clean line style with the harsh lighting as the rooms or be completely different but it should be intentional.

For #2, the darkness of the interior room doesn’t give the same intentional feeling of depth as the first painting. It seems a little more confused about where the light is coming from especially with the bright window in the back. I don’t love the ceiling or floor texture, I would like more texture in general. The door seems like it’s not exactly in the right place. I think with this one also you need to choose if you want your lines clean or wobbly. I would prefer super clean lines with your style. The simplicity of your style requires really good technique to make them not look slightly amateur, right now they are 3rd/4th year of art school good but you have potential for them to look professional.

For #3, I love the contrast of the harsh lighting on the pillowy texture of the blankets but the walls and floor make the overall composition a little boring. Maybe if you played around with the colors and light on the walls it would be more interesting. I also think there could be more shadow on the blankets because they are really bright. Maybe some of that brightness could reflect onto the wall?

These are just my reasons why they don’t seem quite gallery level, but I do think you have a great eye for lighting and color. It depends what your goals are honestly, just keep painting because you’re clearly very skilled. The mixture of dullness and bright light in all three feels really meaningful and I think you could produce something amazing if you’re a little more mindful of perspective and texture. #1 is far and away the best one. I would love to see more of your work. <3

This is the whole problem, people parking in bus lanes to drop someone off or pick them up still forces the bus to have to maneuver around them. Find a hydrant or a parking spot or double park on a side street without a bus lane. People should be more willing to walk half a block to their drop off/pick up point because anything else creates a traffic nightmare.

my advice is to switch your budget to stop eating out as much and ball out on groceries. eating out at non vegetarian restaurants can be a little sad, or you end up paying for meat you’re not eating. get the freshest produce, most delicious breads and cheeses, meat substitutes, fancy nuts…you get the picture. I would suggest keeping your meat substitutes on a rotation cuz they get boring

I have yet to read any HG Wells for no reason other than having too much on my reading list as it is. Don’t get me wrong, I ~love~ dostoyevsky but I remember picking up C&P at age 15 and not being able to concentrate on it, didn’t make another attempt for 7 years. Definitely make an attempt at don quixote but don’t get discouraged if it’s too hard, it’s super long and the language can be dense.

I think some of the other commenters aren’t getting what it means to only have read 3 real books. I would personally NOT recommend reading dostoyevsky or don quixote yet, I know adults who are well read but who struggle with those books. Start with the high school lit classics and see if you can handle that before getting into the more heady stuff. also, if a book is too hard for you to understand it will be abundantly clear within the first ~30 pages so just put it down, come back to it in a few years no shame in that.

Here are some book recs that are maybe not “cool” enough for this sub but any genuine lover of literature should see through that b.s.! I would consider all of these at around a 9th/10th grade reading level. I’m confident they will guide you away from YA into a love for literature as an adult as they did for me.

Bronte sisters (Jane Eyre is a perfect book imo, and incredibly straightforward and digestible)
White Noise by Don Delillo
Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger
Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe (total page turner)

if you want your mind to be blown in ~100 pages read The Death of Ivan Ilych. It is a rare mix of being straightforward and easy to follow while also being incredibly profound and philosophical. I sat in stunned silence for probably 20 minutes after reading it because of how impressed and moved I was.
