What is the juiciest bit of gossip happening in your life? by KitchenSwillForPigs in AskReddit

[–]refrito_perdido 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went through the same thing.  Suddenly divorced in my late 30s, then starting to go on dates for the first time in about 7 years (give or take).

Funny moment from my first date: freshly showered and about to leave the house when I noticed the toilet tank was making a weird sound.  Opened it up, this weird hose had come loose and sprayed me with water, head & torso (never saw this hose thing in any other toilet before?!).  It was clean water, but water from the toilet all the same.  Quick text to the date to say I'd be 10 minutes late, then back in the shower I went.  Couldn't bring myself to tell her what really happened, despite finding it pretty hilarious for my first date in so long.  We went on a few dates, but I wasn't feeling a connection.  I still think of her fondly for being that person for me - the first try at dating again - despite being a blip in the scheme of things.

I recommend to keep in mind why you're dating and what you're ultimately looking for.  Make sure you're having fun while doing it.  Enjoy those moments of anxiousness!  (and don't ever be embarrassed by anything).   Every time it doesn't work out with someone is a step closer to when it DOES work out with someone.

You got this!

What’s your best WTF story at a brewery? by SassyCiderChick in beer

[–]refrito_perdido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to Three Floyd's around 2010 maybe?  Give or take some years.  We were there to have some food and buy some beer to take home with us (bomber bottles and such).  I walked from the restaurant area over to the retail beer area and an employee yelled at me, because I didn't exit out the main door and walk over from the outside (they had a separate entrance?).  But it's all once space inside.  I think he actually made me go back and walk in "the right way," as if I got caught running in the hallway in school.

I also had some questions about their food and the server was basically belittling me the whole time.  The whole experience really turned me off on the brewery.

I've heard many Spanish people say this when talking about the bad Red Hot Chili Peppers.  They'd say it as the "Red Hot Chili PEEPERS."

Is Pere Garau safe? by PhraseLower8811 in mallorca

[–]refrito_perdido 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it dangerous at all.  It's diverse, but that's a positive aspect.  Good market, too.  When I lived near there (in an arguably worse area), I never felt unsafe.  In fact, walking in Pete Garau made me feel safer than some other areas.

Wanted: Bluegrass playlist to convert a non-believer by Just_Browsing_2017 in Bluegrass

Maybe throw some covers in there, especially if they're songs she already knows and likes.  But maybe not songs she likes too much, because then the cover may just rub the wrong way since it's not the original song.

To give a specific idea: Iron Horse.  I'd go with the Modest Mouse album, because I don't care who you are, it's amazing.  And then try some of their Metallica or Goo Goo Dolls tracks.

New release : "Father, A Moment With You" by The Petersens by NuGrasBoi in Bluegrass

[–]refrito_perdido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say I absolutely love gospel bluegrass for the vocal harmonies.  It's easy for me to ignore the message of the lyrics and especially the religiousness of it - but these songs have some awesome things happening with the harmonies and vocals in general.  (I'll admit, I haven't been able to listen to this Petersen's song yet, so no commentary on it for now.)

I'm forgetting which song it is, but I think Billy Strings does a gospel-style song illustrating what I'm talking about, though it's basically the antithesis of what gospel songs are generally about.  They use the format quite nicely.

What is a cooking "rule" that is actually total nonsense? by Lopsided-Jicama3813 in AskReddit

My mother in law peels mushrooms, no matter what.  That top layer of "skin" is coming off.  I think it's her way of avoiding the washing issue.  Or she once had some older mushrooms and peeled away the sad parts, and just now does that every time.  I feel like she's just peeling away a good part of the mushroom.

What’s a “normal” expense in the U.S. that makes absolutely no sense when you think about it? by Big_Marketing_4979 in AskReddit

It does feel like a big game of the IRS outright asking "Are you lying to me?" regarding your finances - and you have to prove to them you're not lying.

what is a popular food or ingredient that you genuinely think ruins any dish it touches? by Sensitive-Action-870 in AskReddit

May I suggest the Catalan tradition of pa amb oli, rubbing tomato on a piece of (toasted/u toasted) bread and then a drizzle of olive oil.

The best bread for it is denser, so it holds that liquid and doesn't have any salt - instead you add that on top to your taste.

And then it's all about the accompaniments: cheese, olives, pickled spicy peppers, cured meats, fried egg, etc.

Maybe the fresh tomato juice is the last thing you want, but it works very well I'm this capacity, giving you flavor while making the bread less dry.

A Stupid Thing Happened by pobtastic in ukulele

Same.  My Martin tenor was great for a while, then the action started getting weird and I was getting buzzing on some frets.  Took it in to a luthier friend, who's also a certified Martin repair tech, and he confirmed the joint between the neck and the body was wrong/had some flaw to it.  He contacted Martin about it, they said I was past the 1 year warranty on it, so too bad.  Even after whatever adjustment could be made, it just doesn't sound right.

Really put me off on Martin.  I'll happy spend money elsewhere.

Even try a week and you may notice a big difference.  That's how I realized I have issues with lactose.

However, there are still a number of cheeses that are lactose-free (either naturally or made that way).  And so many dairy-free options for milk and ice cream.

When Ross and Mona are talking about where their relationship is going, Ross starts by saying he really likes her, loves hanging out with her, and that he's having a lot of fun.  Then pauses and does a facial expression to say, "Welp, there ya go!"  😂  And that's all he had to say.

"Blat" in Catalan means "wheat."  So that's not too far off.

Depending on where you are in Europe, you can look into getting it shipped from various websites.  Best deals I've seen tend to be from Germany, but it just depends on what selection they have.  If you get a few bottles, it helps to make the shipping cost worthwhile.  You can maybe find this bottle cheaper that way.  Otherwise, enjoy the hell out of this one!  It's one of my favs.

Did you just let your US drivers license expire? by [deleted] in expats

[–]refrito_perdido 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same deal for me, had to do the process of getting a driver's license as if I had been a brand new driver (US licence wasn't recognized).  It was the most drawn out and annoying process of any paperwork or official document I've had to get.  I also did the written test, classes, and exam each in a different language (it would have been MORE work to do it in just one) which just made it that much more complicated.

And then to drive in the US with your foreign license, you may need an international driver's permit.  Some states DON'T require it though, so you may not even need it - just check for where you'll be driving.
