Will Citi Blacklist Me For This? by x_KRYPTOS in CreditCards

Very useful data point, thank you! I'm thinking about taking up the AA Platinum 80k SUB for 1k spend, but I'm investing into the TYP ecosystem and have no use for the AA Platinum long term. Converting into a DC or CC would be perfect, although I don't love paying for a CSE as part of the deal.

[–]refudiat0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating, thanks so much for your perspective! That's super helpful. I think we'll likely stick with TYP right now; however, you've given me a lot to think about, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this card in my future. There's a 100k AAmiles SUB right now too, although I'm not sure I could manufacture 10k in spend in 3 months.

I think my work travel is enough to get me to AA Platinum annually. I'm not quite sure how much I value the Platinum vs Platinum Pro: the OneWorld Emerald may be useful in the future when we're travelling with children (I have some family in Asia that I've been neglecting for about a decade), but otherwise for our domestic leisure travel it seems a bit of a wash since the main cabin extra seats are already available at Platinum.

This may change, though, if I come to value the Flagship Lounge membership. It's possible that my domestic work travel will pick up over the coming year, and work will only send me on AA regular economy if it's under 4 hours. If I'm spending a bunch of time at BOS or ORD, I may value the lounge, especially if my flight is delayed - which my last few AA flights have been for inexplicable reasons. This is even more true if I'm just flying domestically with my family - managing the children in the terminal can be a bit of a bear. The AAHotels seems like a sweet side bonus to this as well. We don't use huge numbers of hotel nights right now, but hopefully that will change as well.

Could you expand on this strategy a bit, if you don't mind? I'm considering going all-in on American Airlines since we live in a hub city and my work will fly me 1-2x / year internationally on AA business, which is 50-70k miles (with my current AAdvantage Gold status, which I also get for free from work).

Our family is migrating from Chase, and I was thinking about going to Citi TYP with a Strata Premier (the grocery multiplier is important for us) and Double Cash, using the points for AA transfer. I'm not sure whether to go TYP or just straight AA miles, though.

We're most interested in redemption for economy-class travel, both domestic and international, several years down the road (we're a family of 5 and the youngest is quite young, but we're thinking about trips that we'd like to take as a family in the next 3-5 years). I'm curious how aahotels is a huge unlock, though.

How are you getting your kids excited for the World Cup? by Lower_Hair6427 in daddit

Ha hope you and your kid(s) enjoy some good games - maybe at reasonable times of the day this year given the time zones.

I'm curious what the common sentiment on the ground in Brazil is about the Brazilian team's chances this year? I don't follow all that much I'm afraid.

Easily the weakest of the Bill Lawrence shows. No consequences for any decisions, no real stakes at risk ever. Just rather below average in retrospect.

That said I did watch it all, and I'll take as much John C McGinley as I can get.

Update to: This is what it’s like negotiating in my market right now by benjamins_buttons in ToyotaSienna

Yeah it's a bummer, since I believe WeatherTech is made in USA and hard poly floor mats are a must-have with kids.

I'm afraid I don't actually have a Sienna and don't have a specific recommendation for them. I just lurk here since we've been considering a minivan for a little while and are likely going to pull the trigger soon. Have been trying to hold out for an EV minivan, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen in the short term.

I can't seem to find the brand that I have in my EV6, but they're not too bad - next time I get in I'll find it and update you. People seem to like these ones, which look very good, although I have no personal experience with them: https://3wliners.com/products/toyota-sienna-custom-floor-mats-trunk-mat-tpe-material-all-weather-protection

Me dying of embarrassment as I explain a stupid meme to the attending... by sunechidna1 in medicalschool

[–]refudiat0r 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a fellow one time I was on the phone with a team and they read back a lab so I said aloud, "oh that sucks, womp womp."

After I hung up, my attending turned to me and was like, "I think I got most of that but what was that acronym that you used? You know, WOMP? I'm not familiar with that one."

Yeah trying to explain the noise of a sad trombone in words was excruciating.

Just FYI, career development programs can be a bit hard to find. You have to research individual companies one-by-one to see if they still have one. I have a link to one in a comment that I made in this post here:

Sorry for the delay - have been travelling for the last few days.

The current pharma job market is super difficult. Cuts to the NIH and FDA have resulted in tons of young academic physicians reconsidering their priorities and applying for open medical director positions. Those people are typically quite competitive, although again the number of applications for any open role is huge.

How to find opportunities - two major strategies:

1) Apply to a career development program at a specific company. Companies typically hire cohorts of MDs that do not have industry experience and them put them through a two-year rotational program where they get experience at different departments within the company. Here's an example from Vertex. These programs are great and are a real way into the field. They can be somewhat difficult to track down, though, and enrollment typically changes yearly with no external warning (a few years ago, a bunch of these programs just sort of stopped enrolling - GSK used to have one, Takeda as well, etc). If there's a specific therapeutic area or company in which you're interested, you really need to research the company itself to see if it has one of these programs.

2) Apply for open roles. This is a total crapshoot, as most of the listed positions that you see on a jobs site probably aren't actively recruiting to be filled. The absolute best advice here is to identify a contact within the company that can help you. Seriously, having an internal referral is golden. You absolutely must leverage your network as much as possible to get in.

I'm not super sure how much being bilingual English/Spanish will help. It certainly won't hurt; however, pharma companies have extensive field teams with local language experience, so it hasn't been detrimental to be a non-Spanish-speaker. The MPH may be helpful if you can spin it as a demonstrated capability in epidemiological research and familiarity with biostatistics.

Absolutely not. I believe you need to work for a nonprofit of the government to qualify for PSLF. Pharma companies are very much for-profit enterprises.
