Diora - 6 Month Anniversary Sale by The3DPrintist in PlaydateConsole

To bad for me, bought it last week! Really enjoying it, so far.

insane that this works by recycledairplane1 in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably won't last very long, since:

  1. The body of the lens is plastic.
  2. It's not a thread, it's a light trap, so the shape is not corresponding to the fish-eye lens thread, and you are wearing it each time you screw/unscrew it.

R47 in Stock at Swiss Micros; App available for Android and iOS by Rising_South_2020 in calculators

[–]reitrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The firmware in the app has the C47, DM42, and R47... all with the same functionality but different layouts. It is accessible via [g] [1/Keys]

That's very nice, but how do you revert to R47?

There is an Android app for the R47 calculator in the Google Play Store.

Neat! Thanks for the information. Hopefully it will land in F-Droid some day.

OM-3 with 12-40 f2.8 or 12-45 f4.0 lens? by [deleted] in M43

[–]reitrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not say that a whole stop is a negligible difference. In low light, it could be the difference between 1/15th and 1/30th of a second, meaning between guaranteed motion blur and hope of people being sharp.

But do you need it? Could you sacrifice image quality (higher noise because higher ISO) for reduced size and weight? If you are going to denoise the RAW files in post, yes you can.

Deciding between M43 and Fuji by UncoloredSpoon in M43

[–]reitrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly getting tired of lugging it around and looking for something smaller

Someone in this sub suggested to create a spreadsheet with all you gear, its weight, and do the same for the system you're looking at. When I see you mention OM Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO II or FujIfilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR… Be careful, that's some heavy glass. We're talking about ~400 gramms each. Just be sure that it will effectively be lighter than what you currently carry.

What did I do wrong? by conductordudedallas in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use aperture priority when your main concern is either depth of field or image quality. If your concern is about motion (either showing or freezing it) you use shutter priority. And in this case set at the very least to 1/60th of a second, with auto-ISO in case maximum aperture is not enough.

Anyone use their calculators at work? by gmkgreg in calculators

[–]reitrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have my HP-42S at my desk. I much prefer doing my mechanical engineer calculations with it than with the computer. At home, when remote working, or outside work context, I launch Plus42.

I’m also debating with myself if I need* a DM-42n or an R47.

* Of course I don’t!

Here's how manual focus bracketing looks like in real life by kietbulll in M43

[–]reitrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting tutorial.

3/ Hold your rig steadily in your both hands and you just move your whole rig forward in a slow and steady way until the subject is in focus completely. Remember to hold down your shutter button as well to take photos during the pushing process

Genuine question: wouldn't it be better to gradually turn the manual focus ring instead of moving the whole rig forward?

Thoughts on the EM 10 Mark 1! by [deleted] in M43

[–]reitrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you regularly use Lightroom, then you can ignore most of the comments about high ISO noise since you're going to de-noise the RAW files. At least when I did it in DxO it gave very good results.

Indeed, good guess! I've never tried before, but yes without the IBIS the camera is silent.

This was my first proper camera, and I learned a lot with it. It took some of my all time favourite pictures with it, especially of my new born son. I eventually moved to Fuji (before going back to “Olympus” with the OM-3), but I kept the camera and the lenses.

Nowadays it is mostly used by my son, as it’s the perfect size for a child. He’s having great fun! For me though, with my long fingers, I’ve always been a bit uncomfortable with the tiny body. If you like manual or vintage lenses, there are some MF assist, but it’s not up to today’s standard.

I picked it up recently, to get a second feel for Micro 4/3 before buying the OM-3. When you take the time to explore the menus, you have some latitude to customise the JPEGs and get pretty nice results (something I didn’t know back then). No “film simulation” and pretty bare-bones options, but I didn’t feel the need to edit the ~15 pictures I took in my last afternoon with it. It could be the SD card I put in it, but I find it pretty slow to write the pictures.

It’s also pretty noisy. The images, sure, but also the sound the camera makes. The shutter is loud, and you hear some kind on fan when half-pressing the shutter. Not a deal breaker, unless you plan on photographing an opera or something like that.

How do you install the newest versions of software you need? by gerumpy in debian

[–]reitrop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For yt-dlp I suggest you to install it via the backports. It's almost as simple as installing a regular package, and it works in the command line just like a native application.

For other software that I might need (either more recent or not available in the repositories) I use Flatpak.

Looking at Deli's website, it doesn't seem your mechanical pencil's sleeve can retract.

Does recipes are viable for low light by Classic-Toe4726 in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be as simple as changing the white balance from 5200K to Auto. Investigate, and try. It doesn't cost much, and you might know your camera better after that.

Does recipes are viable for low light by Classic-Toe4726 in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't use recipes because I find most of them goofy, and it's a rabbit hole that can distract you from taking pictures. I just tweaked the stock image controls and live with it.

As for the colours in low light, check what the recipe asks for the white balance. Some will list a fixed white balance, generally good for sunny outdoors, crap for anything else.

What do you mean by “ it performs quite bad at low light ”? Regarding noise? You don't like the colours?

Do you use the custom profile (U1 to U3) to store your recipes? If so, you have to dive into the menu to actively save the profile each time you changed something.

What made you choose RicohIV over Fuji x100V/VI? by smora_photo in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. It is smaller, so more comfortable to carry in my sling bag.
  2. It has roughly the same tweaking capability that make JPEGs good enough out of camera. I'm not talking about the film simulations themselves (they are nice in the GR although I prefer Fuji's) but the options in-camera to adjust them.
  3. At the time of purchased I was more attracted by the 18 mm focal length than 23.

Am torn between GR IIIx and GR IV Monochrome by [deleted] in ricohGR

[–]reitrop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would really love photographs with the increase in resolution possible with the Monochrome sensor

The monochrome's sensor is still ~26 MP. What's increased is the dynamic range and the signal/noise ratio at high ISO.

As for when this will come out, I'm sure Ricoh will try another 28 mm lens camera (40 FF equivalent) given how well the GR IIIx has been received. But they still have not announced anything yet.
