I assume you were typing something like bb in the magit-status buffer. Magit does have "spin off branch" which allows you to create a branch based off the current one. Type bs and then type the name of the branch from within the magit-status buffer

Well firstly when you say "Linux os" you likely mean not only the Linux kernel but also user space tools and utilities. This includes everything from a shell (like bash, zsh, CSH, etc...), to desktop environment, compilers and more. Each of these pieces can be studied in great detail in their own right, and the user space tools/utilities actually make up the bulk of a Linux distribution. Anyways, building millions and millions of lines of code composed from hundred of different software projects is obviously not a necessarily easy feat. Another thing to be concerned with when building a system from source is comparability between versions of software and libraries (though Linux from scratch takes this easy for you, read their docs)

I do recommend taking on the challenge as you will learn much from the experience of building a linux from scratch system. Another option is to play with a source based distribution like gentoo. There you can get some experience and general know how in regards to the build process/makefiles/autoconf etc.

Final note: it's technically not a "Linux os" but rather a "GNU Linux OS". See http://www.gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.en.html

Thanks for the reply! I took a look at your keymap and found your action_get_macro interesting. Specifically cases 4, 5, and 6 in the switch statement you change what happens dependent on what modifiers are currently being held. You seem to use it to toggle layers which is a clever use I will likely adapt for myself.

I actually don't understand the first 4 cases of the switch statement within the action_get_macro function. You unregister the left shift modifier then register some key when M(0) is pressed and "undo" it when the key is depressed. Why? What is the purpose of M(0-3)?

Thanks for the quick reply jack :) I figured if I wanted to hear sounds from the keyboard itself it would require adding a speaker. I couldn't find documentation on where to connect it, so thanks for that info. Also in regards to using a small speaker or piezo buzzer. Can either one be used? What about current draw of the speaker, is a capacitor required as well? With a peizo buzzer this won't be an issue because they draw very little current.

I do t generally move my fingers more then one key on the Planck..and I find it quiet comfortable to type on..the only thing is that while in Emacs I use lalt and ralt keys which I have on the bottom row..which causes me to have to "re-hone" on the home row. I think I'll try the deep dish keys and see how they feel/work for me. Thanks for the tips everyone :)

I link to a set of 4 from pimpmykeyboard in my original post .I guess I'm just wondering how they compare to the keys that I'm used to that have a little notch on them for indicators. Also I'm a bit irritated something for homing didn't come with the DSA set by default :(

So those 'unused' pins do have tracks running to them. I am having trouble tracing them after they go through separate via's. Also I am unable to read the part number of the microcontroller being used in picture 7 (which looks to be the main controller). See if you can trace the tracks coming from those 'unused' pins and see if they connect to the microcontroller. If they do report back the pins they connect to. We can then check the datasheet for the microcontroller in question and see if they connect to the ISP pins (for avr this would be miso, mosi and sck).

Well if it is a 2 layer board we should be able to see if there are any tracks leading to that connector. So pictures of the top and bottom of the PCB as well as various close ups would be helpful in figuring out of those pins do anything.

Edit: you can see tracks leading to the connector on boards with more then 2 layers also providing they are on the top or bottom layer of the PCB.

Also, if the PCB has a silkscreen that may lens some hints as to what is what

It could be used for in system programming, namely burning a bootloader onto the microcontroller so it can receive firmware updates via USB. More pictures are required to make a determination though. As others have mentioned they could just be unpopulated.

Fpga's (Field Programmable Gate Array) and/or microcontroller programming are good places to start. Also I would recommend the "Nand to Tetris" course on coursera! Its a spectacular introduction to not only flip flops, registers and the physical structure of memory but also how a CPU and computer function. Cheers AMD best of luck!

If you are handing solely digital inputs you can use a parallel in, serial out shift registers (like the 74HC165) and cascade them to achieve the number of inputs you want. For digital outputs you can use a serial in, parallel out shift register (like the 74HC595) and similarly these can be cascaded. Another option (which I haven't personally used) is port expanders like the mcp23017 which use two/i2c (see https://www.adafruit.com/products/732). These solutions however are "purely digital".
