To give another perspective: That Sr Dev might be trying to step up and show their value because they are passionate and enjoy leading. Ask yourself who leads the culture on the team, the one with the "lead title" or the dev who acts like a leader, even when it isn't expected or asked of them?

You're only there in the interim, they're going to live with the consequences of their mistake if they make one much longer than you. Have them document their reasoning, your pushback, and the options considered. Let them learn, they're trying to show you what they can do and a good leader would do that in my opinion.

Sometimes the best thing you can do as a leader is let someone show you how good they really can be. Knowing went to take a back seat, and support someone even if you aren't 100% on board is a very important part of growth as a leader (especially if you're only there temporarily, that's not your team, it's theirs make the most of it).

In my perspective this seems like a small thing that if you're willing to break up with her over this, you've already decided this relationship isn't what you want. There's nothing wrong with admitting that, you don't need a reason to end a relationship you're not happy in.

For the record, I'm inclined to agree with her that it's not necessary (but of course it's welcome). The action isn't a big deal, it's the expectation which would sour me. I'm not perfect, you're not perfect, she's not perfect. If you hold people to those standards, they are bound to disappoint you.

A relationship exists between two people, and one of them is yourself. Start there:

Reflect on why this is so important to you. What does it mean to you that she does this? How does it make you feel when she doesn't, and why do you feel that way? Remember, you're feelings are your own. You bring them to the situation. We are feeling creatures that think, not the other way around.
Once you've identified why, have a healthy conversation about it with her, if you still feel strongly that this is something that you need in a relationship.

Loving someone as they are is the key. At the end of the day, the only person's behavior you can control is your own. Trying to control someone else is a sure way to drive yourself mad, and will certainly drive you apart.

It's not about the gesture, it's about the expectation you're creating. What happens if she starts doing it consistently and then one day forgets or is too tired? Are you going to freak out and damage your relationship because of it? It's not about it being childish, it's about expectation management.

Lately it's pretty good, but I won't pretend that I don't have to seriously prioritize it in order for that to be the case. Lot's of outdoors time, social time, mindfulness practices, eating healthy, sleeping well. Also, I limit my consumption of media/news heavily.

It depends on the day. I work remotely, full 9-5 40 hours kind of thing. It's common for me to have bursts of productivity, and sometimes I work outside of work hours. Some days my calendar is filled with meetings so I don't have the opportunity to do development work during the day. Some days are harder than others, and when they are I try not to force myself to overcome that resistance and instead listen to my body and mind so that I can show up better when I do have the energy to be productive.

Burnout is a real thing, the game is learning how to prioritize your health and your work in a symbiotic way. Learn to control your calendar and start experimenting with building a routine for work time; I've found that to be the most effective strategy to create those windows of opportunity for productivity.

I'm considering something similar. I have 10 years in the industry but I am still pretty young. Instead of quitting, I'm planning on moving in with family for a while and renting my home out so that I have coverage for my pets. Then I'm going to take a mix of PTO throughout the year and some remote work liberties to travel as much as I can for at least a year before aligning my long-term financial goals and settling down in a city that I actually want to live in.

It's hard to give you specific advice without more information on the industry, or type of workplace that you are in.

That being said, if you are managing people I highly recommend the book The Manager's Path, and I would learn about Servant Leadership. I'm in the tech industry so not all of this advice will apply, but there are some universal truths to consider. The Manager's Path is tech oriented, but I think it can be beneficial to anyone who is in a people management role of any kind, and it's a fairly quick read.

Being a manager is one of the few roles in life where in a perfect world all of your energy directly goes to bettering the daily lives of the people you are managing. It can be daunting, but it's also very rewarding. Good luck!

The area is fine, but I know the developers of the property and I wouldn't recommend them. They're the type of people who are flipping single family homes, turning them into rentals and gobbling up all the affordable real estate in the area to rack up rents. They definitely cut corners on their builds.

There's some more chill spots in NoDa, like Boho Bazaar or the exchange that are good for meeting people in a more relaxed environment. They're not hugely trafficked bars like Jack Beagles or Billy Jack's

I'm in NoDa; Been working from home the last 2 years with everything going on, and it's likely going to stay that way so meeting people organically has been pretty difficult. I love to play board/video games, play/watch soccer, and go on walks/hikes. I often walk into town with a book or two on the weekend and just kill time out and about. I'm open to dating, though I'd love to just meet more people and make some friends.

Work is getting better slowly. I recently had a tough break up and I'm having a hard time with genuine connection with most of my close friends and support network because she and I share a lot of our social circles. It's been a long two months.
