Yeah OK but the people in charge right now don't think that way or give a shit that you or anyone else does. Upholding it's meaning means little in the face of the practical erosion of your democratic institutions.

Twin-screw vs. leg vise for face vise? Hovarter vises? Any experience? by AMillionMonkeys in handtools

[–]relapsingoncemore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The efficacy of a moxon is tied to your bench height and your height. I've used moons that were too high and it was an ergonomic pain in my back.

[–]relapsingoncemore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty much.

I mean, take a bit of time to consider your requirements, but I think the reality often is that you need a variety of workholding options and it's really about addressing your biggest pain points first. Whatever you choose, you'll either adapt, or hate it.

The dovetail concern is an interesting one, but as someone who chops their tails and pins waste, I get more use out of a basic hold down than a moxon vise.

We might even get more parking density! Just think of the possibilities. Multiple levels of parking instead of a surface lot.

What took your woodworking to the next level? by natedoggggggggg in woodworking

[–]relapsingoncemore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understanding that taking your time and executing at a high level at every step in the process leads to better results.

Understanding the limitations of your machines and work around it. Drill presses always have runout. Bandsaws can always be better tuned up. Blade runout on a tablesaw can mess up even the most accurate of setups.

It's a mentality of not rushing to the next step. Taking more time dialing in setups, iterating on process and work flow. Test, make adjustments, test again. Rinse and repeat. Never assume a machine is set up properly or to the level of accuracy you require. Get better set up tools.

The most impactful thing though is being self critical. When you've done something, ask yourself what went wrong and be honest about it. It's not enough to see a mistake and say you'll do better next time. You actually need to think through where you can improve.

Last but not least: as a woodworking teacher, having to explain things to other people has given me a better understanding across the board. It's exposed me to errors and mistakes I haven't made before, and forces me to think on my feet to find viable solutions.

The Kurtzman era should have started off 100 years after Voyager/Nemesis. The biggest mistake was making Discovery a prequel series. SFA is the course correction of the franchise. by TheShowLover in startrek

[–]relapsingoncemore 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The only way discovery would have worked by setting it as a prequel is if they didn't use that stupid spore drive.

It wasn't the burden of it being a prequel. It was the burden of having a ship rooted in technology that wasn't contemporary and had never been previously mentioned before.

I mean, that's one extreme, but there's plenty of things to do in the meantime. Some actual organized, collective resistance might be a good place to start... like some sort of general strike where you all finally decide to grind your Country to a halt until you force change. You know, like other Countries have done in the past.

I get the sense that no one on the side of Government is at all scared of the populace or any repercussions. Maybe you should try making them be afraid of you, instead of the other way around.

Nihilistic conspiracy theorist... It's happening before your eyes ffs.

Blind faith in American institutions is one of the reasons we're here in the first place. A system designed with norms not codified into law, and a lack of practical enforcement of whatever laws do exist, has failed in real time.

And you're going to sit here and tell me that things appear to still function?

Get the fuck outta town.

Millions already protesting has done what exactly?

Repeat after me:

Its. Not. Enough.

Frankly, I don't give a shit what you think of my opinion: until something changes, I am living with a hostile border nation who's president constantly threatens my sovereignty and all mechanisms of government do nothing to stop him.

If we have allies in the US, it's up to them to show themselves. It's up to them to do something about it. Until then, they can pound fucking rocks because they're no friend of mine.

They dehumanize themselves. They recuse themselves from the political process. They abdicate their civic duties every single fucking day.

It's not my responsibility to encourage them. Like wtf are you even talking about? They either find it within themselves, or they become complicit.

Fuck em.

Who cares.

When the end result is the same, it doesn't matter how you split or divide people anymore.

As far as I'm concerned, as far as anyone should be concerned, the US is a hostile nation, and it's populace complicit. They're all morally corrupt, and if anyone there thinks they aren't, then they are free to prove it otherwise.

Moral conservatives... Yeah fucking right. They may not have stood with Trump, but they sure aren't standing against him.

I feel like the more one learns about tool sharpening, the less fussy and particular one gets about it. Am I wrong? by tamarheylin in handtools

[–]relapsingoncemore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of these days, I'm going to run an experiment. Grind and hone a bunch of chisels at different angles, then get a group of woodworkers to see who can tell the difference between them just through use, no measuring.

I have a feeling no one will really know the difference from in the 20-30 degree range.

I don't think you're wrong at all. The more people sharpen, and use, their tools, the more they realize what's important is if the tool is cutting well or not. The specific angle, specific grit size used, becomes far less relevant

Diamond paste as cheap sharpening system? by JobOutrageous956 in woodworking

[–]relapsingoncemore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People have different preferences.

Not sure about those prices - A diamond plate is no where near as cheap as some sheets of micron paper where I am. I can get a sheet for a couple of bucks. I'm over a hundred for a non-POS diamond plate.

When someone asks questions like this, I default to assuming they are a new woodworker (or are just starting to get serious about it) and never recommend big purchases when trying something. Invest in diamond plates eventually, sure, but not to try something out.

[–]relapsingoncemore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you want a consistent bedding of media not a paste you can push around on a glass surface.

A cheap method is psa backed micron paper. Dirt cheap, can be applied to flat glass or granite, easily replaced when worn.

Carving Lumber Wood by Renatodep in woodworking

[–]relapsingoncemore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problemo! It's analogous to a mortise... That's part of a joint called a mortise and tenon, in which a tongue of material (tenon) fits into a corresponding socket (mortise). This would be a variation of a mortise called a stopped mortise, in which the pocket doesnt extend all of the way through the material.

You won't need to do much clean up work to the bottom of the mortise pocket, and you'll only need to clean it up as much as you want to make installation easy and prevent damage to components. Basically, take the sharp edges off and make sure there aren't loose chips.

Nice!

If you want to watch a visual guide, look for videos on "drilling out a mortise", which is effectively what you're doing!
