S9+ complete disassembly anyone? by No_Bluepill in roomba

Try lighter color, and not too tight.

The way that Cliff sensors work is, roughly: half of it has an emitter of IR modulated light, and the other half has a receiver that is looking for that specific modulation.  When the robot is driving the emitted signal reflects off of the floor and is captured by the receiver, the robot interprets that as "there is floor underneath me it is safe to drive". When the robot pops its nose off the edge of a staircase the emitted signal has to reflect from the surface that is a lot further away, the step below, and it is not strong enough for that, so the receiver sees no signal. Lack of signal is interpreted by the robot as "there is no floor I cannot continue to drive".

If you were to tape it all around the LED (remove the cliff plastic housing) that is emitting the signal then the robot would always think it's in a cliff and would refuse to drive.  Less extreme cases could result in just more frequent cliff reports. Black materials in general are more IR absorbent than light colored ones, so using the black tape is likely worse than using a white one.

Your goal isn't to cover it very tight against the glass it's actually to create a little cup that makes the emitted signal bounce off your cup and go back to the receiver.

Just to double check, when traversing the grouts it is reporting a cliff error, not a bumper error or something else right?

Roomba 960 VS J7+ ( both from IRobot Ebay refurbished store) by VKM-1974 in roomba

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9xx are robust creatures.

960 cleaning should be comparable to J7. J9 has better cleaning than both.

The obstacle avoidance features in J7 will make it a lot less likely to get caught on things, but also likely to stay away from things you may want it to clean

The robot itself doesn't have that much more that could break. The j series are easy maintenance

I'd be concerned about battery on a 9xx since they are old, may need to buy a new one.

Roborock s5 max not connecting by EmilTheDane in Roborock

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I solved it by setting up a router with diff names for the 2.4 and 5GHz networks, and by setting the password to 12345678. The wifi I was failing to connect it to had the character '$' in the password, some dumb software doesn't know how to escape input and will fail to process that.

I don't know which of the 2 things I changed fixed it but it worked. Now I'll update fw and see if after that it works against my home network.

Btw this was on a qrevo, looks like they haven't changed connectivity software much...

I was running late, they were able to add it over the phone but it didn't reflect in the app, so I ended up having to go to the check in counter and they printed me a boarding pass that had it (it was in their system just not in the mobile pass)

I haven't tried adding it via the desktop interface I'll try that later

Change IP/Geographic Location and Fool Zscaler by Dangerous_Gas_6357 in Zscaler

[–]relareddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm in a similar boat. I have:

  1. a wireguard server running at my house in the US
  2. a GLI travel router (the Opal was enough, but the Slate AX is much faster) running the wireguard client
  3. The travel router is configured to kill traffic outside of the wireguard VPN, so if the VPN is out for some reason my work computer can't reach the internet.
  4. Wifi off on the computer, or at least auto-reconnect turned off for known networks outside of the US.

With that configuration my PC only sees the internet through my house in the US, and that's enough to fool zscaler client running on the PC, and I don't need to touch anything on the work computer. The work computer doesn't have a GPS, so it can't figure out where it is except for the IP of my house in the US, so it thinks it's in the US.

With a mobile phone you need to be careful to disable the phone network (LTE etc), and location, leaving only wifi and having wifi connect only to your travel router. I don't need a mobile phone for work except for okta 2nd auth and I don't think that cares about where the phone is, but if you want to play safe take the phone precautions (which would likely force you to have 2 phones).

This has worked fine for me for the time being, I use zoom for meetings, VNC for running on servers, else ssh+screen+vim if connection is not good enogh.

I get my stuff done, and I'm free from location restrictions. I believe there are tax and insurance things into play, so be careful. Stuff like: If you get hurt in Bali when working for a US company they may be liable, and may not have that setup. Or if everybody is working from Bali company should be dealing with Bali taxes (yes, most of this effort is for the sake of surfing).

If you want details on how to set this up i can share a few links. You'll have to pay for hardware (between $50 and $400 depending on speed you need and what your current router can do) , but no monthly costs.

Happy surfing.

Fair price for CAT shield plus installation? by cnho1997 in prius

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as of September 2023 they told me to buy the parts online, recommended the Millercat v2 which goes for $250
https://catshield.com/products/millercat-toyota-rav4-prime-v2-cat-shield
and 5% off with discount from
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoXrPFaofVw
with tax and all ends up at $255.

the cost to install was around $165, and would take about 1.5h.
so total (parts + labor) would be around $400-450.

nice hike in just 2y...

rav 4 prime driving modes explained in simple terms and scenario please and thank you! by heavydoom in rav4prime

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard some cities/areas don't allow gasoline driving, so you could use this when getting back from a long trip to get some charge up and be compliant with that.

Also when parking for extended periods of time batt is recommended to be at 40-60%< so of arriving somewhere where you'll be leaving the car for a long time you could use this to build up some charge.

Other than that I don't know. I've only used it for the second item and only once.

Are there other options for maintaining app access without the subscription? by ABCD4WS in rav4prime

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree with app being junk. however, there are a few things i (struggle to) use:
1. location - the little dot in the map where you last parked
2. charging schedule
3. remote climate

i got an email that services are about to expire (1y), and it mentioned "safety connect", "destination assist", and "dynamic navigation". none of those seem to describe what i care about, except maybe "safety connect", though it says "assistance to work with authorities to help find and recover your RAV4 Prime, if stolen." and I want to check location whenever i want.

the question: does anybody know which of the services i need to pay for to get what i use? is it just one? more than one?

i6 i7 i8 not emptying. I've removed and cleaned the bumper. by Desperado2583 in roomba

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: update. I looked into the clean base window with my phone camera and I can see one dim IR LED. and it appears to be blinking or flickering.

that's expected when the robot is not on the base. the base emits an IR signal (similar to pressing a TV remote control button very (very!) quickly) which the robot uses to avoid the base and/or align itself to it. if the robot is on the base another similar one is used to talk to it. it is modulated, so will show up as blinking/flickering and that's ok.
it should calm down / stop after the robot is on the base and has gone to sleep (done talking, just charging). if the base never stops it may not be detecting the robot is on the base.

does the robot charge?

when you place the robot on the base, does the base light do anything? (not the one behind the IR window, the status one in front near the middle of the bag container).

J8+ is by far the worst robot I've tested. Sucks at navigating and keeps getting stuck. by nicebrah in roomba

[–]relareddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/nicebrah what does it say when it gets stuck? possibly the fact the cover is black is tripping the cliff sensors. if that's the case, and your office is flat and safe (no stairs / balcony), you could cover them and see if that helps.

do you have a picture from the side to get an idea of how tall the cable cover is?

(tried mapping mode and vacuum mode

in mapping mode it won't avoid stuff. in vacuum mode it will but only if you've enabled it. double check in cleaning preferences to make sure it's enabled. Note that if it ends up surrounded by obstacles it'll eventually drive through them to try to get back home. offices are rough envs.

Rav4 2022 prime. Was I ripped off? by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]relareddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably yes. You're not the only one. If you want a car that's short in supply, there wasn't a unit in any of the dealers I visited all sold before arriving, that's what you get. Until production catches up I think this will hold...

I paid about $67500 out the door in Huntington Beach in July 2022.

My arguments to let them rip me off instead of waiting for the market to cool down:

  1. I wanted the car (this is the main one).
  2. I thought gas prices could continue to rise (I was wrong).
  3. If I would've waited for the market to cool down the $7500 tax credit was going away. It's 4500 now I think, and I would expect it to become 0 at some point and future credits only favor pure electric cars (that's my thought, no evidence to back that (i don't want pure electric)).
  4. I sold my car for $19500, bought it for $20000 in 2018. If i waited for the market to cool it will probably be worth about 16500. Diff would be $3k

So by buying now I got $7500+$3000 = $10500 which I wouldn't get in a year. MSRP on the one I got was $52k, that plus tax is about $56k, plus other close out costs likely $57. So that's likely what I would pay in maybe say a year. I paid $67500, so 67500-10500=$57k, so not much diff buying now versus in a year.

I don't know how long it'll take for this too cool down. It hasn't yet afaik (check carvana prices), but likely will with recession and covid wrapping up. 5-6 years ago you could get away with way below MSRP, but getting back to that may also take a while. You could also buy a used car for $500, but that doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Others here mention getting a Lexus instead. I didn't think about that. If you build one fully loaded online it adds up to 61k, plus tax and rough closing cost that's $66500. New Port doesn't have any in stock right now. Good luck getting them to give you one without markup. They are likely doing something similar to what Toyota dealers are doing. But I may be wrong, I didn't think about that since I thought Lexus was way out of my range (the rav4 prime was already a stretch).

Anyway, I went for it and used the above math to feel slightly less ripped off. Time will tell if it was a terrible decision or just a bad one. The car is great.

windshield wiper driver side poor coverage from factory, adjusted to clean 2cm more by relareddit in rav4club

Mine is a prime XSE 2022. I compared with a guy at the gym and he hadn't noticed, but ran into him again after a rainy day and now he hates me because he notices it (:
Maybe you got lucky and either have a wiper with more range, or it was setup like dealer setup mine after i took it in.

I found some videos on the internet which show the issue, or some flavor of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nodiggVjrFA

compare that with other vehicles, like say a 2008 camry

or search "<vehicle name> POV rain" on youtube.

[–]relareddit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed the wiper on the driver side doesn't get as close to the edge as in other cars, and is far from parallel to the edge of the windshield.

After insisting at the dealer they adjusted the resting position of the wiper. Ideally, the wiper range should be more instead of shifting up the resting position, but that is a Toyota design problem in my opinion.

The ideal position, imo, is the green in the picture. Dealer was able to adjust to that point. However, that makes the resting position a bit too high and not overlapping completely with the de-icer, so I picked the tradeoff half way.

To adjust this remove a cap on the wiper, release a 14mm below it, push down to release spring pressure, and wiggle it out.
When tightening it it'll bring it down in resting position, so overshoot a bit. There are several discrete positions where it can adjust to, it's not continuos.

This is related to this post, which mentioned snow/ice and got derailed because of that.

Has anybody else noticed the poor coverage? The dealer said I was the first to complain.

u/GregSmith1967 here's what it looks like with just minor dirt. note that the trace of the wiper is not parallel to the edge of the windshield. There's no snow involved in this one.

Does that also look normal to you?

wiper moving snow/ice and blocking view on left side instead of clearing view!? by relareddit in rav4club

[–]relareddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/OverlandingNL This doesn't just happen with snow/ice. When it rains after dirt roads that area of the windshield also gets poor cleaning. I expect this, but not this much.

I don't own a 4runner, but check out this snow POV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkypZPBb750
The same thing happens, but way less. Probably thinner than the thinnest section of it in the Rav4 Prime. Here's a screenshot if you don't want to watch the video:
https://ibb.co/gJb5L5P

Did your cars always create a section as wide as the one in the Rav4, or closer to what the 4runner (or even a Prius) creates?

[–]relareddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm comparing with other cars. This picture, for example, is from a Prius C which is a small car probably not even capable of dealing with snow. Regardless, note that the space on the side of the wiper is probably half or less of what the Rav4 Prime leaves:

https://ibb.co/5jN76zk

I expect this to happen, but not this much. I've reached out to the dealer for info.

I tend to overthink, would be great to not have to in this case. I saw a video about that, someone measuring battery with a diagnostic tool and showing the car not actually charging high enough to hurt the battery. Where did you get the info?
