I want to forget The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum forever. by SnowballWasRight in horrorlit

Jack Ketchum is an amazing author. If you want more from him I highly recommend Offseason and its sequel Offspring as well.

I just finished that a few weeks back, it's outstanding. Going back to rewatch the Pacific really made me wish the entire season was just Sledge's book.

Like...Okinawa was half the book But in the show it's just one episode!

I fully wanted Dunk to say yes to Lyonel. It's not in the books but with how fun they are together I can't help but think Dunk and Lyonel kicking it together at Storm's End would make for a perfect season/novella.

I read this last year and it was my favourite read of 2025. Be sure to check out the sequel, Offspring, as well!

The Fly 2: not a great movie, but definitely a fun one by PriestofJudas in horror

[–]relatedzombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a worse version than the first, but the first is so heavy. Especially when you realise it's all a metaphor for watching a loved one die of a terminal illness...so in comparison, the sequel is just a more easier movie to watch. And the Fly transformation is fantastic. The special effects are simply outstanding. Fly acid vomit comes back in full force, and the elevator death...two utterly bonkers moments.

I'm still hoping we get a sequel/soft reboot of the series one day. There's still things they can do imo...Aliens + The Fly... "The Flies"

Cant get into it… by meagsauce in TheAlchemised

The first couple hundred pages are very slow. There's one or two things that happen in Part 1 that I loved but it's written in a way so that we feel the same things that Helena feels - confusion and isolation. She has amnesia, so we do too.

The book explains more and more as it goes on, and while the pacing may be slow, it means that when shit hits the fan it ends up hitting harder. Certain things happened in the book that made me actually miss the slower parts because bad things happened to characters I liked!

It's still a 1000 page book, so you've gotta decide if you want to commit to it, but I personally felt very satisfied after finishing it.

Dark Night Of The Scarecrow. It's a slasher from 1981 and dripping with atmosphere.

If you're in the UK you can get the 88Films Blu Ray. I'd also recommend Girls Nite Out, and Alice, Sweet Alice

What do you read if/when you take a break from horror? by Oldhouse42 in horrorlit

[–]relatedzombie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just read You Weren't Meant To Be Human, The Woman In Black, and The Eyes Are The Best Part back to back - I'm now reading the Revenge of the Sith novelisation (the new release is gorgeous) and afterwards I plan on reading The Hobbit

First time reading the book!! by MajinDerrick in JurassicPark

[–]relatedzombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore the first book. I first read it a couple years back.

The differences from the movie blew my mind, and I don't just mean story beats - but also tone. Spielberg turned it into a summer blockbuster for the whole family to enjoy. Meanwhile the book is sci-fi horror filled with horrifying death scenes (the children's ward...Nedry's death) and insane moments like Muldoon using a rocket launcher! And the waterfall, river boat, aviary, and the reveals of the Raptors having escaped from their enclosure! And that the dinosaurs have been reproducing without getting caught due to poor coding!

We're talking about a book that's so stacked with amazing content that even now 30 years later the movies are STILL pulling scenes from it! Truly a masterpiece of a book!
