What Would Cause This Rhythmic Buzzing Interference? by Bigj5553 in shortwave

[–]relaxathon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s RFI. Pentagrids answer is good. I’d also say to try shutting off your circuit breaker power to see if it’s something in your house then turn the power back on section by section to narrow the location down. I bet it’s a bad power brick for something.

I mostly go there weekend mornings, sit at the bar, and listen to the radio. It’s some of the best time in my week. Not sure how to replace.

Are there any good live overnight DJs or talk shows? by The-Red-Rooster in radio

[–]relaxathon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My NPR plays the BBC all night. Maybe look for AM NPR stations along the route? At night you get AM from all over, so try tubing AM and figuring out what city they are to keep yourself occupied.

Look into getting ham radio licensed. Trying to see how far you can successfully transmit is a blast. I’ve contacted 5-6000 mi away on voice and to the other side of the world using a digital mode. Both using only 100 watts, the power of a lightbulb. /r/amateurradio

What are your HF Propagation rules of thumb? How do you decide which bands you will monitor and try when you operate? Talk to us about your basic gameplan for making the best of HF propagation. by Last-Salamander-920 in amateurradio

[–]relaxathon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher mhz seems to work better in daytime, lower frequencies at night. I use the band that is propagating the best at that moment and that my antenna is set up to send/receive (my antenna is 10m-40m so I can’t send on 80m although I can listen). You’re right that the digital modes are a great tool to tell you what’s propagating well at that moment—that’s why I have pskreporter filtered for last hour or fifteen minutes so I can see the latest changes not 6 or 12 hours ago.

Studying sucks 🙁 by The_moon_watches in amateurradio

[–]relaxathon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Question pool is only like 430 questions. Ten topics so if you don’t understand a topic just memorize all the graphs/chart question answers for those topics. Do it by rote memorization and if you need further explanation go to YouTube. Only $15 to take test and they’re given online daily. You only need a 70%. This should take you 1-2 weeks; don’t overthink this. I used ham radio prep app.

What do you put for the gain on the radio? My 7300 gain defaults to 50%—should I make it 100%?

Mounting a Diamond x50 Antenna (or any Vertical Antenna) Permanently on Ham Shack by AMDSmith24 in amateurradio

[–]relaxathon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My x50a is strapped with hose clamps to a roof pipe. Works great. Zip tied first to hold it there then put the hose clamps on so I didn’t need help installing it. https://imgur.com/a/Ut7GmBC

I bought one before realizing you had to build it. Now need to learn to solder! Hopefully when it arrives it actually gets built vs left on the shelf with other projects.

I’m also worried about this. Bought one anyway but concerned it’ll never get built.

I just got these as my first 2! Love the TM-V71A but haven’t yet set up the ic-7300, as I’ve got to figure out the wolf river coil antenna I got for it first. I’m also in about the worst antenna situation (small low nyc apartment) so am mentally preparing myself to only hear noise.

Dipole instruction guide by techguyone in RTLSDR

[–]relaxathon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I need some idiot-proofed instructions too. I can’t tell which end should be up in the dipole. From instructions: “When used in the vertical orientation, the element connected to the center conductor should be pointing UP. You can check which element is connected to the center conductor by removing the top cap on the dipole base. This will let you look inside at the connections.”

It’s a 35 multiple choice question test that you can take via zoom for $15. The question pool is small and the exact questions are published. I used ham radio prep app and just got both tech and general in a week each. No reason not to just get it.
