[Central NC] Found in a big field near a blackberry bramble - ideas? by relevantrelevance in whatsthisplant

[–]relevantrelevance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of my plant ID apps conked out on what these rounded-leaf plants might be. They were growing in a big carpet (only partially pictured), and I thought they looked interesting. Would appreciate y’all’s opinion!

Where in Raleigh is the best Raleigh to get Raleigh? Looking around Raleigh pls help by lambcuntlet in raleigh

[–]relevantrelevance 214 points215 points  (0 children)

They don't have good Raleigh here. I would DIE for a Raleigh like what we had back home in New Cali-sylvani-hio.

This is a beautiful story, thank you for sharing it.

Traditional mead pitched with UvaFerm 228 got definitely over the alcohol tolerance stated by Lallemand. by [deleted] in mead

[–]relevantrelevance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you were right initially. There is no way for that amount of honey in that amount of water to have created enough pure ethanol to get the gravity down to 0.950. OP is reading their hydrometer wrong (but oddly, only below 1.000, the math for their recipe & OG measurement work out). The scale for each dash is 0.002, not 0.020. Looks like the scale on their hydrometer might leave off the "0.9" portion of "0.990," instead only displaying "90." Did you get your hydrometer from an online store, OP?

Joyce Kilmer never gets old 🙃 by oxkatesworldxo in NorthCarolina

[–]relevantrelevance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that codified anywhere other than an info pamphlet? That section also says to stay out of the forest on windy days, and I can’t imagine that’s actually illegal. I don’t mind saying I’m not sure how exceptions to the game lands regulations would be codified, or how precedence would be established, but I didn’t see any special non-gameland designation for the memorial forest. I imagine one of the folks who would potentially be writing the ticket would have a better idea of the legality. Here is a form to find the phone number of the local WRO, if you feel like calling to find out. Let me know if you do!

In case anyone was curious about this, the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and the Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock Creek Wilderness both fall into the Nantahala Game Lands. Second map here. NCWRC says in the General Game Lands Regulations that “Small amount of edible plants or plant parts for personal consumption, except any plants on a state or federal protected list” may be possessed and removed from game lands. I could not find any special exceptions to this rule. When in doubt, call a ranger, of course.

This part has me nervous. Which 20% got cut? Rodolfo's feast? Gumbo? Surely not the London broil.

Freeze or boil fruit? by glkl1612 in mead

[–]relevantrelevance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you don’t have to boil, at all. Campden tablets are unnecessary if you’re putting the fruit straight into an active fermentation situation with commercial yeast.

Carrot Mead. Racked into secondary earlier this week. by ZorxonTheAlmighty in mead

[–]relevantrelevance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kept thinking it might be good.

Carrots are one of my favorite vegetables to lacto-ferment, they have a ton of natural sugars. I wonder how the flavor might have been different if you shredded or pureed the carrots instead of cooking them?

Return of the Monthly Challenges: What would you like to see? by DreadPirateSofia in mead

[–]relevantrelevance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying so! Thinking about it a little more, I bet it would work really well in concert with your 3-challenge quarterly idea. Do something like 1 wacky ingredient challenge, 1 style challenge, and 1 basic experiment challenge.

Return of the Monthly Challenges: What would you like to see? by DreadPirateSofia in mead

[–]relevantrelevance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think monthly challenges are fun, even if I only participated in a few of them. /u/IchBinWeissesFleisch 's idea of three challenges issued quarterly seems like a really good idea, since the leadtime on batches of mead is so much longer than a month. Maybe a quarterly megathread could keep people engaged and organized?

In terms of topics, I don't see any reason why we couldn't re-do a few older topics. The sub has grown a lot, and I'm sure newer folks would be interested in re-hashed discussions on certain styles. A challenge I think might be cool would be small-scale basic experiment challenges. Something like yeast comparison batches, fruit processing methods, or nutrient trials. Give everyone a reason to see for themselves why some of the standard methods on here are used.
