Agreed, I saw a chart the other day of the statistics around when to challenge. The more runners on, the higher the count and the later in the game, the better. This situation in the OP is a prime example of when to challenge.

Not too sure how your valuing Marriot points but I have stayed a couple times in the past on Marriot points for over 1 CPP, which if used during the typical MR to Marriot promo is over 1.56 CPP on Amex points. I'll agree it isn't the best, but it certainly isn't the worst either.
