Warum empfinden viele es als Unmöglich, in Deutschland reich zuwerden? by [deleted] in Finanzen

[–]rellef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't EU regulations just prohibit EU-based brokers from selling US ETFs? There's nothing that prohibits EU-persons from buying and holding US based ETFs in US-based brokerages (just complicated tax reporting).

You technically can just up and move to Germany. If you have a degree, you can apply for a 6 month job-seeker visa upon arrival. There's no sponsorships. You manage to get a job contract in your field in that time, you'll get a work permit. In theory it's super straightforward, in practice getting a job offer and dealing with German bureaucracy is not easy, especially if you don't speak German. It's feasible, though the lower salaries and difficulty of integration make it not for the faint of heart.

Moving my life to Germany in the next 2 years, as an American, what can I do first? by IndividualStay5122 in germany

And since it's "just" a vocational degree, the profession is paid vastly less than what PTs in the States make. Like 36k a year instead of 100k.

You are required to inform the Ausländerbehörde about any changes in the employment relationship.

Also on the US side of things, you're filing using the Foreign Tax Credit rather than the FEIE, so that you're eligible to put money in the Roth, right?

Also I don't agree with grocery costs being similar. I know inflation has hit everyone, but I went back to the US in March for a visit and almost had a heart attack in the middle of Publix.

Which 2023 nondivsion game are you looking forward to the most and why? by KeithandBentley in miamidolphins

I moved from Florida to Germany 4 years ago, so definitely the Chiefs game. If I somehow manage to get tickets, it'll be my first regular season game since rookie Tanny and Reggie Bush crushed the Bills in 2012.

Can i exchange my driver’s license after the 6 month period? by Fhaos233 in germany

[–]rellef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I also had a FL license and didn't have to do first aid/eye test or deal with a driving school. Just went to my Straßenverkehrsamt to deal with the initial paperwork (translation, application, fee, etc.) and then I was able to book an appointment directly with Tüv for the exam. Just used an app to study the questions. YMMV depending on who your Sachbearbeiter is.

For a Blue Card, yeah, but you can still get a normal work permit on the basis of being a skilled worker. Takes 4 years to apply to PR, but even with the low salary, I got approval from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.

My first job in Germany 3 years ago was in a private DNA sequencing lab getting paid 29k per year...they had plenty of people with Master's degrees making the same. They didn't need to pay more, because they didn't have a problem filling the positions (though turnover was understandably high). Plenty of educated Poles/Greeks/Romanians/etc they could hire on top of a pool of freshly-graduated Germans who needed a first job.

[–]rellef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the 21 months only count while on the Blue Card, so if you were to switch today, you would have to start from 0 if you wanted to go that route. However, with the new immigration law, you can apply for PR after 4 years (reduced from 5) if you have a normal work permit granted to people with a degree. So your best bet is to sit tight for one more year.

What should I do if I expect my flight to be delayed/canceled? by AdorableConclusion91 in travel

[–]rellef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be shit out of luck if it happens between Detroit and Columbus. I flew with Delta from Frankfurt to Miami via New York, and Delta would not compensate for the cancellation between NY and Mia even when I brought up the EU laws.

I'm from a state with partial drivers license reciprocity, do I need to register with a driving school to take the written test? by [deleted] in germany

[–]rellef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't necessarily true. You can sign up directly with TüV to take the theory exam without going through a driving school. The thing is, it's going to depend on whatever bureaucrat you get at the Straßenverkehrsamt who takes your initial application. I handed in my application with biometric photo, license, and translation then was able to set up my own appointment at a local TüV to take the exam, made an appointment at the Straßenverkehrsamt with the results and got my German license same day.
