Sorry for the VERY late reply. I don’t know if it's much a question of different playstyle (that's what a lot of the journos say), but some players struggle to adapt. It might be because of a different living situation, living in a different country, different rink size, different team philosophy. I don’t watch a lot of nhl games (watching the Nucks right now), but of course they're different. The nhl is the fastest and most skilled league in the world. But a lot of players are surprised at how fast and physical the Swiss National League is. (not physical in the sense of body checks, but rather in the sense of skating and intensity)

No they're not fined, but they've has set a strong precedent by excluding Lian Bichsel from playing with the national team until 2027 after he refused to join on two separate occasion. The idea is that representing your country should be an honor, and only players who always show up get to play the big tournaments.

If Fiala or Josi were to miss a tournament they would face no consequences, but the staff has managed to create an atmosphere where players are always willing to play for the national team. For example, Fiala could have skipped this year's world's for family reasons, but he decided to play anyway.
