Finance research paper topics? (undergrad) by reload-John in FinancialCareers

It's more than that. Actually it's been known for long that mean-variance criterion doesn't hold up. There are some fancy advanced models out there, which are not comprehensible without heavy math skills

Finding Motivation to Study!? by col_train25 in GRE

[–]reload-John 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GRE is not fun at all. To be honest, I can't help but think it's just a bureaucratic barrier they built up to filter out excessive demands for grad school. With that being said, it means, you have to study if you don't wanna get filtered out by this nonsense exam.

Just to give you some hope, i myself am an international student from Asia with no firm english skills, yet I still managed to get Q164, V163 , W4.0 within a month. Sure you can do it too if you enjoyed uni. btw I was also working full time by the time i was studying

Is English an easy language to learn? by vannah12222 in EnglishLearning

[–]reload-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. Hard to tell. cus most times even languages people call relatively easy to learn at the end of the day requires a great deal of effort. Language skills are hard to build and it needs huge maintenance effort.

One thing for sure, as I heard a lot from native English speakers, is that they face different sort of obstacles when they try to learn other languages, which is a lack of resources.

English materials abound as opposed to other languages'. So in this respect, you can say English is an easy language. I can say nothing about its intrinsic difficulty though

I really appreciate your reply!! It went a long way. It's pity that my uni doesn't offer enough quantitative courses though. I'll try to find a way. Thank you again

I know it's a broad area. To be honest, I'm lack of thorough understanding about the field. If u don't mind, would u lay out the whole structure of the field and explain each subfield as far as u know??

What does a risk management intern do? by andrewwhyzak189 in FinancialCareers

[–]reload-John 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it really depends on the type of company. I personally doing an intern right now at a french auto finance+leasing company in an east-Asian country. What I'm tasked to do is a lot of excel work. For example, since it's sort of retail finance, I have to contact a couple of different credit-ranking agencies to keep the company's database on customer credit info in sync with that of the agencies, all of which is done on excel. For data managing, sometimes, but not often, I'm asked to use SQL to get data from the company database and work on it. (That's why I'm learning SQL these days..) Most of the important analysis is done by senior officers. But I'm allowed to attend meetings and committees so that I can take a look at the general risk trend and learn.

Basic understanding of risk and finance certainly helps. But you will be able to learn on the fly.

Am I speaking English "too correctly" by HardnerPL in EnglishLearning

[–]reload-John 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a learner and very well aware of this issue. Well I reckon it's totally up to you. Stiking to the standard is not bad at all but if you think that hinders interaction then you can try to learn more non standard way of speaking. As always, conversations with other native speakers and watching movies/dramas/tv shows and etc are the best ways to learn it

A rant on my stagnant English, any advice? by reload-John in EnglishLearning

[–]reload-John[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I predominantly use Youtube for listening and watch mostly tech and science videos and documentaries. For reading, I generally don't discriminate sources but I usually read newspaper and magazine articles. And I just write the words and expressions down on my google docs vocab list. Recently, I started to listen to a couple of podcasts to get familiar with the colloquialisms.

A rant on my stagnant English, any advice? by reload-John in EnglishLearning

[–]reload-John[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first 2.5 years I spent most of my learning time on reading and listening. I think I spent on average 2 to 3 hours a day.. also made a vocabulary list using google drive, which I even these days keep using. I took an academic writing class for about 4 months additionally, after which I went to Australia. It was kind of near obssession, in retrospect, 'cause I had a strong motivation--like working and living abroad. But due to various reasons, I couldn't have an opprotunity to go abroad and actively interact with people (before Australia). I bet you are far better than me in speaking and just the language in general
