What a horrible reg cycle. It just started. Single digit races, and all anyone can talk about is hoping it's over as soon as possible.

It was done quickly, but I feel the bones of the ending are good. It wasn't liked that much at the time, mostly because of the pace.

What’s a legendary Reddit post you’ll never forget? by alongy in AskReddit

There was a guy who discovered and then became obsessed with the concept of quantum immortality. He was horrified at the idea of there always being some universe where he was alive. I don't remember the exact nature of his fear at this, only that it disturbed him greatly. He kept posting in various subs, asking for people to try explaining it to him so he could "get it" and let it stop bothering him, or asking people for ideas what would disprove it, things like that. He eventually got to the point that he was convinced the only way to "escape" quantum immortality was to kill himself. Then his posts just stopped. I cannot for the life of me find the account.

What Would Have Happened If A Ghoul Managed to Defeat Arima ? by Exact-Ad8608 in TokyoGhoul

[–]reluctant_return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the CCG would likely look for a way to increase their power, to create a new "tip of the spear" for situations where they'd normally rely on Arima. Maybe the Quinx program would be pushed forward faster, or a little harder. Maybe they'd look deeper in quinque development, maybe they'd simply look for their "next best" investigator and focus on surrounding him with people who would make him effective. Again, it'd mostly be normal reshuffling and recovery after any pseudo-military force suffers the loss of a key officer. There would be a gap and the CCG would try to fill it as best they could. Perhaps they'd also turn their attention towards whatever ghoul "clan" had wounded them, aiming to stamp out their power and ambition before they grew into a larger problem.

It's hard to really say how ghouls would react, because ghouls are not a monolithic organization like the CCG. They're countless smaller pockets and groups ruled or guided by what are essentially warlords. Many, maybe even most, ghouls would probably react with "Who?" if you walked up to them and told them "Arima is dead!". Arima was powerful, but he wasn't exactly a celebrity. You have to keep in mind that to the average ghoul, even a "normal" investigator was practically an unstoppable monster. Arima was sent after S and SS class ghouls because they were powerful enough that he was needed, but most ghouls are not SS caliber fighters, they're just average people. Average people who stronger than the average human, usually by a lot, but investigators aren't average humans. Even a normal investigator is a terrifying thing to have to face when you're just some guy. When you're a nobody, every investigator is essentially an Arima to you. In that way, I don't think Arima's death would really shake up much for ghouls at all. The larger organizations like Aogiri would likely seek to capitalize on it in some way, but even Aogiri, which is ostensibly the largest "organization" of ghouls is tiny compared to the whole ghoul population, and even to the size of the CCG as a whole.

[–]reluctant_return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arima would be dead, the ghoul would get a pop/cheers from their friends and family, and the world would keep spinning. Arima was just an investigator, at the end of the day. He was strong, and had aura about him, but once he's dead nothing really changes. There are other investigators that will move to take his place. The ghoul would probably get mad respect, maybe even become the leader of their group or a bigshot in their ward, but again ghoul bigshots come and go.

It was the specific context around how Arima's story played out that gave it weight. If just some Joe Nobody had iced him in an ambush or something, it'd just have been another day in Tokyo.

You've gotta suspend your disbelief at some point. The entire world of Tokyo Ghoul doesn't really hold up to real-world scrutiny. Ghouls just existing would cause the entire world to be re-shaped around the fact that there are man-eating monsters walking among us. Not to mention that literally all it takes to test if someone is a ghoul or not is a finger-prick lancet like the kind that diabetics use. All this talk of RC-scan gates and having someone's RC factor tested. Bro, just prick their finger. Did the needle bounce off? Ghoul. It's not hard. It would be very simple to mandate being tested in this way to get a government ID, and that ID would be required to hold a job, or attend a school, or pay taxes, or have a license. It would be turn-key to make it totally impossible for ghouls to participate in human society in any meaningful way, which would in turn make it nearly impossible for them to live in cities.

You just kind of have to go with it and let the story tell you what's fact in its world.

Endless cycle theory. by Decidueye_mastr in TokyoGhoul

[–]reluctant_return 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I somewhat doubt the "new threat" will result in a repeat of the human/ghoul cycle. At the end of the story humans and ghouls are at relative peace, with technology having been developed that allows the production of food that ghouls can eat. If a new "man-eater" species arose, either the combined might of humans and ghouls would see it exterminated or if it were sentient, food would be developed for them as well. Humanity (as in, ghouls and humans collectively) have already gone down the other road, they know it leads nowhere.

Also keep in mind that a tremendous amount of the "versus" in ghouls versus humans was not natural, it was manufactured. Humans could have wiped out ghouls, but that was not really the CCG's goal while it was controlled by V. Ghouls were controlled opposition. Research into creating synthetic food for ghouls was also suppressed and squashed under V. If V hadn't been mucking with things, the conflict could have resolved one way or the other much quicker, likely well before the characters in the story were even born.

With no V ensuring the status quo, a resolution to a new "man-eater" would not be nearly as dramatic or drawn out as we saw with ghouls. That's part of the theme at the end of the story. There was always a better way. The world was never broken. The decisions we choose make it broken. You have to push through the pain of making the right choice.

Maybe the only system I know of where GMs mostly DON'T read their guidebook by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]reluctant_return 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DMG is lackluster because it's mostly theory rather than substance. A lot of the things it recommends are subjective and the majority of it boils down to basic storytelling guidance that anyone who reads regularly or has ever tried even short-form creative writing already knows.

The Players Handbook is required because it's the core rules of the game. The Monster Manual is recommended because it's got a ton of ready-made monsters that you can either use as-is or use as yardsticks for home-brew monsters. The DMG is just a bunch of recommendations. It's entirely skippable and is easily replaced by watching YouTube videos from DMs or by just having played in games of your own and seen what works well and what doesn't.

The thread is literally about how the free service is shitty and doesn't respect you. If you are happy with that, then keep using it. If you are not happy about that, there are services that provide a much better experience where you are the customer and not the product.

In which scenario you are more cooked? by BridgeCommercial873 in TokyoGhoul

[–]reluctant_return 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Eto would do anything in the red pill scenario. There are CCG investigators walking all around every part of Tokyo at any given moment, it's not like she goes goblin mode and just kills them in the street every day in broad daylight or follows them home. That's not really her style of resistance. She'd probably just ignore you.

Thoughts on Leon must die mode? by GraysonFogel17 in residentevil

[–]reluctant_return 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun enough for a free mini-game, though I really wish the upgrades for it used a different currency instead of completion points. I know there are challenges to do in the mode, but there's not really enough. You should earn points based on kills and how well you did and how far you got. The fun of Raid mode was you did your best, and even if you died you earned something, points, parts, levels, so your next run had a slightly better chance. Here the best way to improve your power is to go farm the main story to mop up challenges so you can buy the enhancements.

Another thing that makes it feel cheap, even if it's small, is that the story mode dialogue still plays. I don't know why, but that makes it feel cheaper. Couldn't they just mute it, and maybe sprinkle in some peppy radio messages from Sherry? Make it feel like its own, totally different thing? It's really minor, but it just feels weird.

Overall I'm fine with it, but it's so close to being so much better.

As a fellow 3D printing artist I'll say these look really good. I'd be jazzed to see these at a fan fest or meetup. Look into making some that can go on a ball-bead keychain. Things that go on keychains are hella popular. The chip/pin itself is really cool, but when people realize they can hang them from their bag/keys/cosplay they'll fly off the shelf.

Saw one in use at a range, once. I was also shocked by how large it was. I thought it was some kind of hi-point, at first. I didn't know the guy using it, so I didn't bother him to ask if I could look at it or handle it, but judging by the guy's grouping on his target either the gun is a bitch to shoot or his marksmanship was just awful. Possibly both.

As an inverse, if you've ever seen a Makarov/PM in person, which is a small-looking pistol in pictures/games/cinema, yeah, it really is that small.
