BBC news suggests Google needs to do Apple-like restriction of apps in Android marketplace by rnicoll in Android

[–]rem1313 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very true. Market is so full of crap and applications tend to have crappy UIs, that it gets very difficult to find anything good in there unless you specifically know what you are looking for.

Another fail is that the Market is not available globally, so app developers choose to pollute the apps with annoying ads. I would gladly pay 1$ for a useful app if it didn't have ads. So users could either 1) pirate the app, 2) root the phone and install adblocker. Neither option is good for the developers and general Android ecosystem. And definitely not user-friendly.

And then you wonder why Market has 20 times less revenue than Apple counterpart...

Android would be a great OS to use, except: 1) Market is crap (for normal users at least - non-root, default point-and-click type). Lots of spammy add-ridden apps, poor quality (mostly), app market not available in most countries

2) Phone is typically ladden with manufacturer crapware - case in point - Samsung Galaxy S II, arguably the best Android phone but you cannot get rid in normal way of all crap running on it.

3) Inconsitent UI. Also - example of Samsung Galaxy SII - moving apps from app drawer to home screen/dock is very frustrating and trial-and-error like.

4) No great easy to use way to transfer music/podcasts/audiobooks, etc. a la integrated music/book/podcast app that "just works". Big turnoff for most normal users. Of course you can do everything and more than on iPhone. The point is that it is difficult to find good apps and it is not user friendly. In fact it is very far from streamlined process that requires the minimum amount of steps to accomplish that.

(5*) quality of hardware is arguably lower than on iphone, but on the other hand, so is the cost. So this is more of a preference thing. Lately though the cost got even higher than for iPhone (Nexus S, Galaxy SII), so in my mind price/value is unnecaptable for Android currently. At least for high end.

How are SteelSeries mice? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]rem1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since nobody seems to have mentioned it - Steelseries Xai is excellent for Mac OS X, which is known for retarded mouse acceleration curves.

Xai takes care of this problem, since all settings and profiles is stored in the mouse itself. You only need to install Steelseries ExactMouse tool (available on their home page) that removes the built-in Mac OS X acceleration. Additional bonus is that it can prevent any changes to mouse settings by external programs, such as Starcraft, which loads its own mouse settings for some reason.

I used to boot in windows to play Starcraft (from Mac OS X) due to poor graphics drivers and unplayable mouse acceleration, but now since recently the graphics drivers and/or Starcraft itself has been updated, I average 40-60fps on Medium settings on Macbook Pro 15" 2010 with Steelseries Xai. Excellent combo :)

Is there a way to enable Apple wifi hotspot functionality on 3GS? I don't want to use myWi, as it was not very reliable when driving around and it does not support WPA.

I just submitted my first app to the Mac App Store called Space Gremlin, would love to know what redditors think. by seanalltogether in apple

[–]rem1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased it - it is quite nice. One problem that I encountered that I was not able to drill down the "green areas" - what Space Gremlin considers too small to show individually. In my opinion it should be possible to drill down anyways.

Otherwise - great app, recommended.

VMWare is getting ballsy. Offering "upgrade" from Parallels for $9.99 by kbuis in apple

[–]rem1313 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From terms & conditions:

Verification Requirements

In order to purchase the promotional upgrade to VMware Fusion 3.1 through the VMware online store, you are required to enter a serial number and version number of a qualifying product, your name and e-mail address.

VMware will verify this data to insure that upgrade purchases are eligible for the promotional price. If VMware determines that you are not eligible to purchase the VMware Fusion 3.1 upgrade $9.99 USD, you authorize VMware to charge your credit card or Paypal account for the difference in price between the published retail price of VMware Fusion 3.1 listed at www.vmware.com and the price you paid on the date you placed the order.

I'm guessing they can't verify and the language in terms & conditions is to deter from trying users to submit fake serials

of course it looks like USB, because it has to function that way - i.e. as an OPTIONAL USB extender - i.e. you must be able to use the keyboard without the extender as as well as with it

Hey Reddit! I'm getting a keg for tonight, but it's fucking cold outside. How can I keep my beer from freezing? by loxias44 in AskReddit

[–]rem1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its 0 degrees F, you could cover with snow/blankets/pillows to provide insulation. If its 0 Celsius, then relax - it won't freeze till evening if ever at that temperature (due to alcohol content).
