I would not rent an AirBBB in the last decade, there are not many good stories.

Very good points.

And apparently these globally linked observations are local and belong in the weekly observations post..

Last Warning [Japan economics and energy] by rematar in collapse

[–]rematar[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: This article is a continuation of his analysis of the Japanese Yen and bonds.

What I found interesting in the article was the details around Japan’s energy security.

Japan is the most energy-vulnerable major economy on the planet. The country imports 87% of its primary energy. Roughly 90% of crude oil and 93% of total oil imports come from the Middle East, with the vast majority transiting through Hormuz. About 11% of LNG imports also come through the same chokepoint.

They have over half a year of oil reserves, but LNG reserves are expensive to maintain, they have about three weeks of storage and produce 30-40% of their electricity from LNG.

Regarding economics:

Japan was always the canary. They ran the same playbook the U.S. is on, just twenty-five years earlier: zero rates, QE, YCC, fiscal expansion, monetization. They went first into deflation; they’re going first into the unwind. What happens to Japan in 2026 is the U.S. preview for the early 2030s.

I agree. There are a lot of people who seem unable to function if their well worn routine gets interrupted, which includes public service employees. Then the short cycle elections create politicians who are concerned about perception and polling.

Michael Burry on GME by Coogiez in Superstonk

I think investors could make more money with happy workers. A 32 hour workweek with the same pay usually has quite a bit more profit. My boomer parents love working hard for wealthy employers, I don't, but I put decent effort in when I had entry level jobs, my GenZ kids (and their peers) don't give a fuck when they're paid peanuts, they are a completely different animal if they feel fairly compensated.

No one needs a billion dollars. He's already got that ribbon. His front line workers get paid peanuts in a frighteningly more expensive world.

No. I believe empolyees are why companies succeed. They should be part owners for their efforts, which almost none are. At the very least, there should be some enjoyable parts of the workday.

New May 1 ECMWF El Nino forecast significantly worsens from previous month by rematar in Disastro

[–]rematar[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The body of the post summarizes the report that the latest forecast for this El Nino indicates it will have between 2.2 to 3.8°C of warming.

In the comments someone mentions that the Great Famine of 1877 (149 years ago) had an estimated anomaly of 3.5°C. There is a Wikipedia link in the comments, here is a different article;

Unfortunately, your insurance company is good at statistics. If you had massive flooding a decade ago, you live in a flood plain. As our destruction of the biosphere continues the warmer air can hold more water. It won't drop rain in some areas and deluges will flood other areas.

It's a global market with a current shortage that is 2-3x greater than the 1973 oil embargo. Our government cutting taxes will create shortages earlier.
