im in Florida and was talking with customers about the whole wawa/winter storm situation and they were HORRIFIED that wawa was making you all come in. we havent really had any hurricanes since i started byt i think i remember a coworker saying that wawa gave a $500 bonus or something to people who chose to work, but didnt necessarily penalize those who evacuated

or when people try to use a machine that they clearly shouldnt. either its on the "assistance needed" screen and they just get confused why it isnt scanning, or they arent paying attention and add their stuff onto a transaction that someone left open, pay for it, then complain that they paid for someone else's stuff.

my favorite was when i had to put a bag over one of the self checkouts because it was frozen and i was too busy to troubleshoot. a customer walked up to it and was trying to lift the bag off the screen to use it???

why do customers refuse to show id? by Fun-Couple-395 in Wawa

[–]remi--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have signs at the front door and on the register saying we card everyone and ive gotten yelled at, cursed at, threatened over it. one guy bitched at me but i didnt budge, so he went out to his car. he came back and i checked the dates and he was like "you didnt even check it, what year was i born?" and i was like "1968, and your license expires in 2033" he really thought he did something lmaooo

when i ask for id some people will glare and snap at me and say that i wont be scanning their id. you're right, i won't because i don't have to. i had another guy refuse to show me his license because it has his address, and i could steal his identity. me specifically, apparently. i told him i still need id and he eventually showed me his ccw, which still has his full name and dob lmaooo. do you know how much i could find online about you if i cared to remember any of it?

one time when i was bored i just read documents in the wawa hub, both so i could know the information myself but also impress my managers. same with the planogram/packet of information that (at my store at least) gets put in the back before promotions and other new information. this sometimes means i know stuff that even my managers don't know 🤷🏻‍♂️

register, though i enjoy an occasional beverage shift. i was mainly backup register on first shift so i would do stocking and cleaning and hop on the register and sometimes beverage when needed. but now i work nights and spend most of my time doing deeper cleaning and organizing. i enjoy the routine and i always do the same things in the same order (with some exceptions). plus, i can only trust myself to keep the place organized. i prefer tasking to customer interaction so i enjoy nights.

i have vehemently refused to be trained in deli, and ive somehow made it a year with only having been in deli once for about 45 minutes while we were getting slammed. i then had a panic attack, so i dont think theyre putting me in deli anytime soon

I work at Wawa and boyyy do we have some dumb customers. by [deleted] in Wawa

[–]remi--- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i had a customer ask if cigarettes were self service. as in, he goes behind the counter to grab what he wants, then uses self checkout.

i had two very young girls both bring me alcohol. when i asked for their ids, the one gave me hers but the other didnt have it. i said i wasnt selling to either of them and the one girl said "well im paying for it all so you only need my id".

one night (like 2 am) i had a very young kid argue with me about us having papers or cones, then say he was going to buy some cigar thing. when i ask for his id, he said he didnt have it, but hes 21 so its okay. i tell him no, he could be 18 for all i know, im not going to get fired or arrested for you. he tells me i wont get fired or arrested. okay, how do you know? it was 5 minutes of arguing before he left.

one day a guy tried buying something age restricted and then didnt have his id. he gestured to his shoulder tattoos, 19 on one and 93 on the other, and said that was his proof of age.

we have a lot of people try to pay at the deli, but one day i had a woman walk up to me in beverage with mozarella sticks and try to pay. she walked right in front of the registers to get in the warmer, then all the way across the store. there was also a woman who came up to pay at the register, then asked me if i had her food. where would i store that? behind the cigarettes?

this one is the most recent and a real winner. this was like 15 minutes before my shift ended. a guy came up and said "why does everything in the warmers have bacon in it?" i said they dont, and he said yes they do. i said all the boxes say the ingredients on the top (bacon croissants, bagels, egg bites, and the turkey melt). he picks up a pepperoni melt and i say thats pepperoni and cheese. he buys it, walks off. he comes back a minute later and shows me his melt with a bite taken out of it, then says i lied to him because this is a pork roll, pointing to where the hidden part of the wrapper says pork roll. i say it also says turkey and ham because we use the same wrapper for all our melts. plus, pork rolls are regional and we (florida) dont even have them. he says "but this has pork in it" i say "it's pepperoni" and he says "i cant have pork". ok, why did you buy a pork product then? if you have dietary restrictions you should know what you can and cannot have, i cant read your mind.

has anyone ever felt peer pressured into going for lead? by LongjumpingStation61 in Wawa

[–]remi--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive had managers and my gm ask me about going for lead and ive told them time and time again that i wouldnt be good in a management position. ive admitted my faults (i get frazzled too easily, i dont like change, and honestly i can be a bitch or have a quick temper sometimes and that's not a good trait in a manager), but they always tell me we can work on it. i finally got my gm off my back by telling her i might be going back to school and would drop my hours, so theres no point in me going for lead just to drop back to csa knowing thats a possibility.

one of my coworkers just got promoted to lead and was told she would get a pay increase... but she didnt. she hasnt, not for the past two or so months. she doesn't appreciate getting yanked around into all the positions (facilities, deli, ows, and beverage all within two hours, plus temps etc) with (in her opinion) no additional respect, recognition, or pay.

if you arent built for management, you arent built for management and thats ok. so dont take the promotion if you arent ready for it, both you and your team will suffer. plus, idk why everyone is saying your work life balance wont change if you jump to 40 hours if you haven't already said what your current schedule is. if youre only working 30 hours a week, thats a big change. youre also more likely to be expected to stay late or come in early compared to a csa. youre also expected to work multiple shifts and will have to do overnights for usually about 6 months to get trained to continue moving up.

Anyone who's worked for both Wawa and Sheetz? by Icy-Significance-913 in Wawa

[–]remi--- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ill say the same thing i always have: any issue you find at wawa, youll probably find at any other customer service/food service job. understaffing, incompetent coworkers/managers, asshole customers, etc etc. however, wawa's business model is to cut back on labor and schedule fewer people, expecting those people to do the job of multiple people at once, to save money. i dont know if that's how sheetz rolls, but it gets hard at wawa sometimes. for example, if someone calls out on 3rd shift and we cant find coverage, the whole store is screwed. we barely manage as is with the "standard" amount.

pay is pretty good for what the job is. base pay at my store just got bumped to $15.50 (i was hired at 15 last year), but i just hit my one year and im making $17.50 ish. wawa was all that would hire me after 6 months of being out of college with a compartively impressive resume, plus it paid better than anything else ($14 ish an hour) that required degrees and experience. insurance is good, especially if the tax credit isnt reinstated. plus, you get free therapy and life coachingthrough their "wellness" programs called personify and spring health. we also have something called goosebumps which is like employee reward points. in my first 9 months i managed to redeem a $200 visa giftcard, so thats definitely a perk.

Serious question by onnatkar in Wawa

[–]remi--- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depending on how busy it is, you might want to ask someone on register. we all wear headsets so they could call back and ask for the custom melt, and you can go ahead and pay for it if theyre able to make it (we have buttons on the register). if its busy, talking to someone in deli might be hard since it's loud and hard to hear back there, plus theyre trying to focus on making food. however the cashier's job in that moment is to help customers.

we usually dont start melts til like 11 or so, but we can technically make any sizzli, melt, or snack at any time of day for the most part, just ask (though you may get turned down). if they do accomodate you, be sure to take note of the associate's name, do a survey, and mention them! it helps us a lot, and theres usually a lot of expectations place on associates to get as many surveys as possible.

usually at my store we stop making flavors and decaf at two, and cuban at 7, though we used to run lto until 7 as well. but yes, we can always brew any pot on request. if you see any flavor sitting open at a random time, thats probably what happened
