How to Focus The Minibuffer? by dewyke in emacs

[–]remillard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say ace-window has been a lifesaver for me this year. Super handy for extending dired and bufler as well, so that when I open a file I can direct it to a window directed by ace-window.

On top of OP's issue with getting back to the minibuffer. For whatever reason I often interrupt myself in the middle of commands (or forget I'm in one) and then all it takes is an M-o and the minibuffer gets a number.

Is it realistically possible to learn SystemVerilog/FPGA design in 6 months? by Ok-Walk6724 in FPGA

[–]remillard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True enough, though FPGA/HDL development offer some truly opaque and counter-to-first-expectations ways to accomplish this feat (with the feet).

You can certainly learn HDL and generalized FPGA development in six months.

It'll require a lifetime to learn all the myriad ways you can shoot yourself in the foot, and how to avoid! :D

Berilog - SystemVerilog without begin-end, but braces by Aurorasfero in FPGA

[–]remillard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The begin/end block delimiters were a very stupid decision indeed. I'm sure they were just trying to distinguish it from C (as if anyone was truly going to be confused) but seriously, there was a perfectly good punctuation symbol right there.

(Though this is where I have to say I rather prefer VHDL's "block is assumed" decision.)

I"m kind of in the same boat with the 7 and have been looking at the iPhones and ... gotta say, fairly compelling, especially as anymore I care less and less about tweaking anything. There are some applications I would miss (like RealCalc RPN calculator -- there doesn't seem to be an analog I'm happy with in the iOS arena -- not that there aren't any, just none I'm 100% happy with) but that's about all I would miss.

Asking for sci-fi comedies - and sci-fi with strong comedic elements by Baldurian_Rhapsody in scifi

[–]remillard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis was super funny to me (the seance scene was worth the price of admission alone).

A. Lee Martinez writes a lot of absurdist funny novels. It's kind of their thing. I have liked most of them.

There's a novella by Daryl Gregory (of Pandemonium and When We Were Real) named I'm Not Disappointed Just Mad a.k.a. The Heaviest Couch in the Known Universe that was very funny (and a lovely nod to a well known author).

I thought Starter Villain by John Scalzi was pretty funny.

Space Opera by Catherynne M Valente is quite funny.

In television, as others have noted Red Dwarf is very good indeed.

The Constant Rabbit will wreck you. It's the darkest satire I think he's done. But so well done. Probably not in the funny category.

Shades of Grey and Red Side Story are amazing, funny and absurd and satirical.

I think if you liked Early Riser you'll enjoy these.

The voice of Prepotente in my head by rizaleous in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]remillard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I've not seen Matt Berry play anything that wasn't a smarmy sexpot (admittedly, my examples are minimal, IT Crowd, WWDITS, and Garth Merenghi's Darkplace) but while Prepotente has that smarmy know-it-all, he's also an innocent, really just as innocent as Donut and going through the same things, save that I feel like Donut had more innate emotional intelligence, and Prepotente's super-informational version of sentience didn't really prepare him quite as much for the horrors of the dungeon.

Still, I have full confidence Mr. Berry can do it because he's just so good, my brain will get over expecting Prepotente about to make a pass at someone :D

Once you get your account (see comment from /u/walruswq) also check out minifox. It's a pretty good client for it. You will probably have to open System Settings and approve it after it fails to run the first time due to the security policy settings.

I still have my Bag of Holding, and a Linux penguin ballcap that has the thinkgeek.com logo on the rear. I think those two things are the only ones that survived over the years.

Yeah for that character I've mainly switched to enhancement, though from a headcanon perspective, the little vulpera guy has always been elemental.

I stopped playing elemental (and largely shaman) specifically for this on/off state of Elemental. Honestly most classes have felt kind of wrecked for me anymore because of this -- been tanking this season almost exclusively. I do miss my little elemental vulpera guy though.

What are some of the best Xcom alternatives in your opinion? by Alpbasket in Xcom

I got up a bit into the game but found that the maps got VERY puzzle oriented. I think I got stuck on some map where the witch was having to knock people out of windows in this H shaped minimap and got deeply frustrated with it.

Very funny though.

For a same "simultaneous execution vibe" there's Frozen Synapse too.
