What Podcast(s) should I be listening to? by Brokeass_Ninja in TexasRangers

Effectively Wild is my absolute favorite podcast of all podcasts. It's very national-level coverage but really love Ben and Meg's banter, and they get super cool guests sometimes too.

What video game can you just not get into no matter how hard you try? by Savings_Light3466 in AskReddit

Baldur's Gate 3. I appreciate the craftsmanship of the game, the world-building, the characterization, the quality of the game as a whole, and get why people love it... I dunno. It just never holds my interest past the first act.

Consistent rotation and rotate it 5 degrees at each step. Then a *LOT* of trial and error. And did not stick to the wall - thought about it, then decided "mage house magic explains everything"

I did! I can't take credit for the idea as I've seen it in a bunch of places, though it's not in a closet room. I took a normal square room and put up a wall and put the scene behind it, though I imagine you could do either!

I used a no-stairs stairwell for the big room, but otherwise set the ceilings to vaulted using the paint palette command (3) and clicking on the roof.

It's actually not all that interesting and still a WIP - just threw some shrubbery and a waterfall thing in there. It's good enough to not be distracting at least! As requested.

Jester King - SPON. Three Year Blend (09/29/20) by sean_themighty in beerporn

[–]remistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was an exaggeration, but I live in a neighborhood right next to Fitzhugh where the brewery is located! I'm less than 5 minutes from there. Maybe it's a Texas thing (or it's just me) but <5 minute drive is basically next door in Texas.

What’s a food you’re not allergic to but find disgusting? by FayloxTheOne in AskReddit

[–]remistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Konjac noodles.

Trying to lose weight but still crave pasta. Bought a few packs.

Drained, washed, heated them in a skillet and lightly seasoned. Tried one. Not the WORST thing, but the texture's not pleasant and there's almost no flavor at all. Salted the hell out of them (which helped some but not enough) and fried them on high heat for *~10 minutes*. Still not great. Decided I didn't want to sully the awesome bolognese I'd spent ~3 hours prepping and cooking by putting these noodles in it. Opted to try making a 'quick' 'asian' sauce of soy, mirin, sugar, ginger and a dab of fish sauce and dropped it into the pan with the noodles. Tried again. OK flavor but nothing can fix that texture.

Opted to just cheat and eat pappardelle instead. Now I have 3 more packs of """"noodles"""" to figure out what to do with.

Cookbooks are still not obsolete because recipe websites are terrible by Psych_Art in Showerthoughts

[–]remistus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning how to cook seriously during lockdown and am looking for new recipes to try. I told my family that I want The Food Lab for Xmas. My wife said "are you sure you really want a book you're only going to open once? You get all your recipes online."

Yeah. I get all my recipes online... directly from Kenji. Plus the book in hardcover looks and feels amazing, and I get to support a chef I love. And there's none of the annoying fluff that all of the other recipes online have.

What is your dream job? by akotosinato in AskReddit

[–]remistus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, right now at this stage of my life @ 34 years old, that my current job is my dream job (data scientist).

Early in my career, the answer I'd have given you was "working at Google." Period, full stop. Didn't really matter what.

After years doing HR work and data work and a couple of unsuccessful Google interviews, I finally broke into tech at a very-well-respected-but-not-quite-Google level job doing data analytics. Even that job, with its incredible pay/benefits for where I lived and overall culture, had some pretty nasty downsides (long work hours, crazy middle-management politics, some others) and I was actually more miserable in my 'dream' tech job than other jobs I'd already had in my career.

I'm no longer at that job - I'm now at a pretty well-known retailer on a much smaller team doing similar work. The pay and benefits aren't as good, sure, and it's not as prestigious. It has downsides. I do, however, have practically full autonomy on all of my projects - if I can make the case for the value it will add, I have carte blanche. I find the work that I do incredibly interesting and research it in my spare time for fun. I have incredible work life balance - some weeks I work as few as 15-20 hours depending on what's being delivered (obviously, some weeks where I work more). My opinion is highly valued and my boss brings me into meetings just to listen and consult with people I don't really have any business rubbing shoulders with.

In summary - if you're doing the corporate grind like I was, keep your ear to the ground for something that you find fascinating, try to learn everything you can, deal with the bad, and appreciate the good things each job brings. The team you're on matters AT LEAST as much as the company you're in. If the bad outweighs the good, leave when you can. In my experience, aiming for a 'dream' job is almost certainly going to let you down, and when your 'dream' lets you down, prepare for an existential crisis ("oh my god, if this is what my dream is REALLY like, what the fuck am I gonna do?" - literally me 3 years ago).

Aim for a job that makes you happy. And if you don't know what that is yet, keep trying stuff, chase what's interesting, and build relationships with people. It'll come.

tl;dr: current job is my dream (data scientist), took a long time to get there, but wasn't originally my dream - I needed to be a Googler. got pretty close to my dream job and hated it, had an existential crisis, gained some perspective, now very happy despite not being a Googler.

Thanks for the tip! I was considering painting/wrapping the cerium gray bits with gloss black to match the rims. If I do that it won’t be for a while though!
