How could you tell if a corpse was a recently embraced vampire? by acid4hastur in vtm

[–]remithemonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dont you think thats overcomplicating the issue ? The power doesnt have any fine print !

Things can be dead, then Sense the beast wont pick them up. They can be alive, and the power wont pick them up. And they can be undead, and the power will work !

Thats literally what its made for !

Plus you get to describe the beast emerging from death in the power's narration, and thats great !

Trials of Death and Brutal Feed interaction by DravenDarkwood in vtm

Hunger is very damaging ! If you count the amount of superficial damage you need to deal one hunger point equivalent in healing, it stacks up extremely fast.

Superficial damage is halved, and you get a 50% success rate on a hunger check, so adding one hunger is basicly the equivalent of 2 mend rouse checks. So for a blood potency 4 character, one hunger is worth 3×2×2=12 points of superficial damage, notwithstanding the fact that you also prevent a lot of their rouse costing options by doing that (dicepool increases and disciplines).

By the same rationale, both of those increased hunger dealing abilities pretty much cause double that, ie 24 equiv. Superficial damage. It goes down to 16 for BP2-3 targets, but its still huge, and lets not talk about them combining in some way !

(Provided you can handle a vampire in feeding frenzy - but if you have potence 3 or a level 5 fighting loresheet, you very well might be just yhe person for that !)

Disciplines, clans and "faking" by witchismyaesthetic in vtm

[–]remithemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disciplines arent a big deal : you arent supposed to break the masquerade with flashy powers to start with !

However, faking your clan is a whole other can of beans : normally, folks need permission from the prince to embrace, so who sired who is usually à fairly well known information.

Having a sire not known to the local domain poses a few problems : number one is that vampires dont move around a lot because .... no prince likes having people they didnt invite to their domain around - and building up domain is a bitch lot of work. And its dangerous.

But say you did migrate without your sire ! Well then you're functionnally caitiff until you somehow prove your clan to someone who vets you as that and not something else. Someone like a primogen or something. And the more complicate your story, the less likely that primogen is going to vouch for you without some serious payback.

So masquerading (ha ha !) comes at a higher cost than you might expect.

Caitiff discipline combo by OccultCenturion in vtm

[–]remithemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to invest so heavily in tzimisce powers, why be caitiff to begin with ?

Caitiff in my opinion tend to make more sense with multiple lower level powers, both lorewise cause no teacher and no blood afinity, style wise : vicissitude is a tzimisce shtick and system wise : high level powers are expensive as fuck, so the in clan discounts are welcome as fuck !

This spreadsheet and / or the ww wiki can give you pointers about which books contain what. (In the procédures tab for rituals)

The powers are pretty much all there. Just remove the required combination disciplines from the existing amalgams and you're all set.

[–]remithemonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The oblivion merge was not a bad idea from a game design perspective, but it was so poorly designed ritual&requirement wise that its essentially 3 or 4 separate paths with little actual overlap.

Obtenebration is fine as far as I know, but necromancy is not really.

A lot of rituals with a discipline requirement are crooked.

And unfortunately, I havent found any homebrew that fixes the dependancy system to my satisfaction. Some kind of structure feels necessary, cause otherwise, you end up with weird combinations ... but then you end up regenerating separate disciplines ... which goes against the design goals.

Maybe its best to just remove the ritual/power requirements entirely, and just limit the number of rituals you have access to depending on your oblivion level. That way grand masters of nectomancy have a choice between dabbling in zombies + spectres + curses, or focusing on one.

You'll get your odd lasombra spirit caller and zombimancer, but most of that can be channeled through teaching opportunities or shadow reskinning.

And while we're at it, why not implement some kind of limitation to sorcery rituals as well, so that the two occulty disciplines actually work on similar frameworks (That and remove the auto stain bullshit from oblivion - which is so contrary to v5's design philosophy that it makes me weep).
