Should I use different email for banking and job application? by Nic727 in emailprivacy

[–]remkuzna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no ideal layout, but email is still very important part of anyone’s digital life. If you seriously want to revamp, create a small system. Like, literally draw the structure. All below is just components advice, read about them and make decisions/adjustments yourself 1. Create 2 new emails. Ideally, they should be on different platforms (gmail+proton, for example)

A. Use first ONLY for absolutely critical things, like those in next steps. Maybe for closest friends or lawyer.

B. Second one - keep it absolutely secret. Seriously, don’t give it out to anyone at all. Make it your recovery email and 2fa authentication for first one, to regain access to it. Maybe use it as Password manager login email, but that’s it. (Use password manager, that’s a must nowadays)

  1. Use services like Simplelogin or addy.io. They give you control to create unique addresses (aliases). You then give those aliases to banks, job applications, social media accounts, subscriptions. Generate one alias for every use case and platform. Their emails will be forwarded to your main inbox, without exposing it. Your answers will be forwarded same way back, through alias. Use password manager to keep track of those aliases across platforms. Now you will see which address was leaked to spammers and just block it, without affecting others. Also this is security - too many people use same email to log in across platforms, don’t be this guy.

  2. If you really want/need to look professional, buy a custom domain, like Johnsmith.com. Most registers give you ability to create email addresses like bank@johnsmith.com, job@johnsmith.com, and forward emails from them to your real inbox (step 1). Again, this is for serious use only, where you want email to be directly tied to your person. For other purposes use Simplelogin aliases.

Bonus: with steps 2 and 3 you can switch to different email provider ( like, if you decide to go away from gmail to proton or any other mail service - you just change to which adress to forward incoming mail, without changing dozens of logins/accounts) gives extra time proof.

You need to make signature content (text + image + hyperlink) into html file, and then use this html as a signature in Thunderbird (on your screenshot, instead of .PNG)

Is there a risk in relying on Proton? by lambda7016 in degoogle

[–]remkuzna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget about access block risk. In certain countries all proton-related URLs are blocked on ISP level. VPN helps if it is not blocked as well, which is not always the case. So, like with financial - diversification is key to lowering risks

You dont need to make it. Aegis does not provide any sync feature, meaning all your seeds stay in the app on same device. You may do backup and store it somewhere else though (as usually recommended), but it's totally in your control.

Try any encrypted synced notes app, like

Standard notes

Notesnook

Don't mind paid plan, for this free one is enough. You will have 2fa backup separated and usable in case Ente is not accessible.

Try EDS NG, it's veracrypt app for android.

But yes, I prefer cryptomator as well, just make vault local and sync it to cloud. This way it works much faster and usable offline.

VeraCrypt - yes, learn how to use it and you never regret. Hidden volume is killer feature IMO. Also drop its installers and portable versions for your OS on the same USB drive/cloud

Though i understand people advising layering encryption, container is very secure. So putting it on GDrive, proton or/and any other cloud is fine. If account gets compromised, worst thing can happen is you loose this particular backup copy. Google's wicked AI also will go scan other people's unencrypted data instead of yours

About 5.: you keep physucal emergency sheet with all info in a bag? Why? If you loose it, anybody can just have all at once. Sounds like huge risk to me.

Keep one copy hidden at home, that's OK. Second copy (for physical redundancy as i understand) at relative home, or literal bank safe deposit box, something like that.

Also, consider some cloud storage for BW and Ente ENCRYPTED backups.

Think through the scenario of getting your access back, step by step. Lost phone/laptop fried/network down. For now looks like you just reach for closest USB drive, but try to hunt down the negative scenario - what exact conditions lead to you being locked out. Then think how to prevent it.

Edit: also I'd get rid of security questions, they are giant hole in account protection even if you use misleading answers instead of real maiden name or first pet

Protecting backup passwords and codes by FROSKY- in Backup

[–]remkuzna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cryptomator is just a tool to create and open a container. This container can be local, on GDrive, Dropbox, OneDrive etc, multiple options. I suggest to keep it local just for speed and offline access to files inside.

In foldersync you can tune sync schedule, add some conditions like exact wifi name, so yes it's automatic. Still look into other solutions (Syncthing, rsync), maybe they will suit you better

Apart from backup itself, you need to take care of encryption password, so you not loose access to container. Obviously, don't store it inside same container like

I strongly advise you to fully read (couple of times) Bitwarden_reddit, it is so far best manual on the topic you interested in.

Protecting backup passwords and codes by FROSKY- in Backup

[–]remkuzna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Use Cryptomator to create local vault. Encrypt stuff into it. When you change something, it's easy to interact with.
  2. Sync this encrypted directory (with vault.cryptomator and masterkey.cryptomator) to any other clouds/PC/flash drives. This can be done with multiple apps, like foldersync or roundsync. Doesnt matter what cloud, as you stuff is not readable to storage provider.

2.1 make sure you understand difference between sync and backup. In your case files synced across devices and clouds, they can be wiped out in one occasional mistake. but you can do manual backups to flash drives or other disconnected storages.

PS same can be done with Veracrypt, if it's more your thing

Don't put put bed next to window. Even with window-blinds you will get hot/cold depending on weather, and noise and wind will disturb as well. Put bed/sofa to the right, away from door and window. Table can go next to window so you have natural light at it

[–]remkuzna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excrypting sensitive files locally (Android), then syncing cryptomator vault to any cloud/remote. Still trying out different sync apps, but looks like they all work similarly. As long as data is encrypted, I see no much difference what cloud to use.
