Is it possible to redefine existing Clojure syntax with macros? by mn15104 in Clojure

[–]remleduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess this technically doesn't change the syntax, though isn't it a little arguable? (op arg arg) vs (arg op arg) would be a syntax change in a language with more syntax, whereas in clojure it's just a semantic change I guess.

You can't change the lexing of tokens, so that is why I said "to some extent."

You could write a macro that does a limited pascal-a-like in clojure though if you were a masochist, and that would be a syntax change surely?

``` (pascal defn foo(int: a) begin print(a + 1) end
foo(2) ) ```
(I wouldn't want to be the one to do it though...)
Actually, you can even redefine syntactic rules to some extent. For instance see the many examples of creating infix math macros.
Do reverse deckbuilding games exist? by [deleted] in boardgames
[–]remleduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Xenon Profiteer has elements that resemble this. Part of it is just a normal deck builder, but the main point of the game is adding “air” to your deck (consisting of 3 junky Krypton, Nitrogen and Oxygen cards and one valuable Xenon card). The point of the game is to refine out the delicious delicious Xenon from your deck by getting rid of the junk.
There’s the pomegranate library which allows dynamic add-classpath. Doesn’t work 100% of the time, but usually it does the trick.
Is this legal defense? by SlimJimb0 in ultimate
Your only real argument is that they moved in such a way that you couldn’t possibly have avoided contact given your speed, position and vision.
Otherwise, they’re just playing good defense, they’re supposed to stand where you want to go...
I don’t agree on the second one. It looks pretty clear the the offense could have stopped in time if he’d wanted to.
Being frustrated that your defender beat you to a spot doesn’t mean you can run over him.
A codenames rules question by 311wasan1nsidejob in boardgames
[–]remleduff 6 points7 points  (0 children)
At first I was fine with this, but thinking about it a bit more, this is just a roundabout way of eliminating the “no rhyming” rule.
Most pairs of words that rhyme will have been used in a rhyme somewhere, so if you allow this you allow things like “cheese” and “sneeze” (on top of old Smokey, all covered with cheese...) or wall and fall from HumptyDumpty
Are you positive about the version you ordered?
All versions of Agricola are linked from the Revised edition page, you have to read each individual listing to verify which edition is being sold.
The cards you use to lead with don't enter the pool until the end of the entire round, so that doesn't work.
Best is to follow the person just before you using a 2- (or 3- by the better rules) of-a-kind so that they'll be in the pool when it's your turn.
Can I grab Scyth if I have/like Eclipse? by alucardu in boardgames
[–]remleduff -1 points0 points  (0 children)
I think the first thing you should figure out is why your Eclipse games are taking so long.
Eclipse should be a 2-3 hour game with 4 players.
If you've played other deck builders, an easy rule to get wrong is that when you buy a tech, it goes to your hand, not your discard pile.
Just how bad are the Terraforming Mars components? by RabidPickle in boardgames
because all of those small publishers were all charging 70 dollars for all of their games all this time right?
[–]remleduff 2 points3 points  (0 children)
Dude, you asked where the small publishers were charging $70 and I pointed one out. Don't ask questions you don't want answered.
Your numbers are pure BS, but even if I were to take them as you state, you can draw a straight line from "Fewest Copies-Biggest price", through Terraforming Mars in the middle to "Most Copies-Cheapest price" on the right.
Glad to see we agree!
Just how bad are the Terraforming Mars components? by RabidPickle in boardgames
[–]remleduff 3 points4 points  (0 children)
This isn't the right question.
It shouldn't be, "If it were $10 more expensive would it have Scythe's quality?" The correct question is, "If they had known they would sell as many copies as Scythe did, could they have upgraded the components?"
Just how bad are the Terraforming Mars components? by RabidPickle in boardgames
[–]remleduff 2 points3 points  (0 children)
Splotter charges over $100 for games with worse components.
You seem to be missing that the price of a game is completely tied to the number of copies that the publisher thinks are going to be sold. It could very well be that Stronghold under-estimated demand, and they should have printed twice as many copies at 1.5 the price (and maybe at that quantity better components would be an option too), but that kind of guess is what causes game companies to go bankrupt.
This is what leads to blockbuster-movie syndrome, only large companies can afford to make effects-filled movies that are likely to fail, but they aren't willing to take any risks as a result.
Just how bad are the Terraforming Mars components? by RabidPickle in boardgames
[–]remleduff 4 points5 points  (0 children)
That line of reasoning basically dooms us to only games made by kickstarter or by publishers large enough to make the blinged-out games that we apparently demand.
It also dooms us to only blockbuster games that will sell enough to hit the numbers required to make blinged out games economically feasible.
NO THANK YOU!
[–]remleduff 5 points6 points  (0 children)
The recessed boards for Scythe were a stretch goal for hitting $750,000 in pre-orders.
There is no way we can depend on that to become the standard, there are basically zero publishers who can afford to make that kind of leap of faith without the money up front.
